The Doc's query to Zero - "How does horror make people better?"

Well, I’m tempted to say that ‘horror films don’t create psychos, but they make psychos more creative’ – but ultimately I do think that horror films serve some useful social functions and do, indeed, make people better.

I would divide the ‘people’ into two categories. The first are those people who, like us, are devoted to the genre. The people who scour the aisles of video stores and trawl through various websites seeking anything new – whether major studio or direct to video indie. For fans of the genre, horror serves at least three functions. First, as should be obvious to all of us who have survived many years here at HDC, horror has created a vibrant subculture – a group of fans who use their love of the genre as a reason, perhaps an excuse, to hang out and create meaningful relationships. In a world where meaningful relationships are often few and far between – trust me on this one – the horror subculture has provided a great haven for many of us who feel, perhaps somewhere deep down inside, that we don’t quite fit into the world – at least not like everyone else does. Like Frankenstein in James Whale’s classic, we are stumbling in a world that doesn’t quite make sense and that doesn’t embrace us – but among fellow horror fans we fit in! Second, I think horror provides its devotees with an escape. Now there are many types of escapist fantasies, but I think horror provides more of an adrenaline pumped escape than most others. I mean, Bruce Willis may run from bad guys with machine guns, but he’d run a hell of a lot faster if those bad guys were flesh eaters carrying chainsaws! Third, for fans of horror these films provide a critical outlet that is sorely lacking in today’s world. Horror is difficult viewing – not in terms of gore and guts, but in terms of puzzles and mysteries. Horror films, especially good one’s, put us on our toes – make us anticipate the next move and often punish us severely when we are wrong (LOOK BEHIND YOU!!!). I don’t think most popular entertainment provides such a mental/emotional (and sometimes physical workout – well maybe porn).

So, what about the rest of the world – those many folks who don’t necessarily say they love horror but who, from time to time, will flock to see a Psycho or an Exorcist. Here I think the question is more interesting. What does horror do for the average person who doesn’t embrace the genre as a whole? Well, I think one of the biggest things that horror does for the culture in general is provide a safe place for us to consider our collective fears and anxieties. I mean – even a cursory glance at the history of horror suggests that the biggest and most popular films arise during times of trouble – Dracula and Frankenstein in 1931 – the darkest year of the Great Depression – Night of the Living Dead in 1968 – the year the ‘age of aquarius’ turned dark and violent - etc. Even more recent films like Hostel and Saw have played out some of America’s deepest post-9/11 anxieties. I mean, c’mon, isn’t our main question in America after 9/11 ‘how far will we go [torture/killing of innocents/wiretapping] to survive?’ – which was the tag line for Saw!! So, while many people scoff at horror as being the ‘lowest’ form of film, I contend that horror serves a vital reflective function for culture. Perhaps the best way to put it is like this: We make monsters out of the things we fear and then we create stories about monsters so we can look at those monsters in a safe way. If this holds true, then the monsters we create and the stories we tell about them also reveals a great deal about ourselves and what we fear.

"The Exorcist is the one movie in the world that STILL scares the crap out of me. I've heard a lot of the "younger" folks here say it's a stupid movie. Why do you think it has no effect on them??"

The Exorcist manages to be both intellectually terrifying and visually assaulting to the viewer. It’s hard to think that the demonic possession of a young child and watching her slide further and further away from the possibility of savior can have no effect on even a seasoned viewer of horror. Today it seems that horror has moved in a different direction. Now on the silver screen we see visions of torture, maiming, and murder which are far easier to identify with than possession. I think for a lot of viewers, especially the younger ones, it’s more terrifying to imagine a psycho hunting you down and slitting your throat because it’s easier to imagine. You don’t have to contemplate the existence of a higher power or forces that can’t been seen or heard but can readily take us over and cause our destruction when you’re watching a hillbilly remove the head of an unfortunate hiker. I think that “younger folk” simply desire an evil that’s more tactile, something that they can see in their mind’s eye stalking them to their car after leaving the theater. Another possible answer is the rush you get from plotting in your head how to deal with a villain. We’ve all done it haven’t we? Who hasn’t watched Night of the Living Dead and thought about how they would dispatch with zombies? Who hasn’t watched a horror film and thought about how a character made a stupid move and he or she could have survived had she done something else? With The Exorcist you lose that rush, most people can’t imagine battling a demon much less that Devil himself (although I’m sure it was Pazuzu and not Satan). I can’t answer for all the youngsters out there as I’m sure some of them just didn’t like the story or felt that the effects were dated. I can however venture a guess which is what I’ve done, and it was quite a chore to do so. I can’t imagine anybody not being shaken to the very core by this masterpiece.

Very true but I think that desensitization is tough to include because the market hasn't been saturated with such films. Even the later Exorcist films didn't have the impact and to be honest, even though I've watched thousands of horror films, The Exorcist STILL chills me in a way different from most horror. I was thinking that our societies concept and views of religion could have had more of impact that desensitization.

I realize that there aren't really a huge amount of movies specifically about demon possession (as I was trying to think of as many as I could just now), but as for horror in general, I think that much of what this generation has been exposed to is far more intense or 'shocking' than anything the previous generations have seen...Which would give this generation more of a 'been there, done that, not too impressed' vibe.

Know what I mean?

I have a different view. The movies that come out today (with a few exceptions) are what I call "slice-n-dice". They hold no interest for me whatsoever. I don't find it scary at all. If I want to see gore, I'll watch Discovery Health Channel. The things that really scare me are monsters, ghosts, the things you can't see, etc.

I don't know, maybe it's because I'm older? Who knows. Maybe just a different opinion.

"Who is the greatest composer of horror film soundtracks, and why?"

This really isn't my best subject, but I would have to say Mark Ayres. He composed the music to Suspiria, Halloween, The Shining, and Nightmare on Elm Street.

Music in a movie is very important, because it can describe people, places, situations, anything in the movie without the use of any dialogue. Take for instance, a shot of a reclining chair. Add dark and menacing music to it, and you have an evil armchair. Add in some sad music, and maybe you have the favorite chair of a loved one that passed away, or something along those lines. Music is very important in any movie.

Now without Mr. Mark Ayres, would the Overlook Hotel be as eery? Would Camp Crystal Lake be as threatening at night? Would Freddy be as scary? Maybe, but thats not the case, because he did compose the music for those movies, and without him, they may not be as popular as they are today. Thats why I chose Mark Aryes.

Judge NeverEnding has turned in his verdict, after a long, careful and patient analysis!!

This is what the esteemed Judge has to say...

"Psycom5K, I was prepared to be very lenient on this question, as, after all, it's mostly a subjective matter.

However, Psycom has FAILED the test by giving an inaccurate answer.

Mark Ayres composed NONE of the scores you list. Suspiria was composed by Goblin. Halloween was composed by John Carpenter. The Shining soundtrack used a selection of classical numbers, with a main theme by Wendy Carlos. Nightmare on Elm Street was composed by Charles Bernstein.

I give Psycom ONE POINT for turning in an answer.

But I also punish him for such a crappy answer.

I shoot Psycom one with Executor and once with Zoomer.

You got off easy. Next time I won't be so nice."

Sorry Psycom5K, but you have been SHOT twice by the Judge's handgun, and his choice of bullet-combos were EXECUTOR and ZOOMER!

That equals 10 bullet wounds!! Which means, you stand to LOSE 10 HPs from your count, which are used to heal your wounds.

Shit! fucking horrible question for me, and I go and try to do some research, and I got bad material. So I know why I was wrong. but its my fucking luck that I got the wrong information.

you see, I know nothing about the music composed in movies. so I tried looking up horror composers, and i came across information of a cd that was made, where people recomposed( I dunno if thats the right word, its more like a band covering another bands song) the music for the cd, and I thought that they did it themselves, because I was in too much of a hurry to get it done, and didn't check to see if it was right. So I guess I deserve it.

So ya, thats gonna be it for me for a while. So I'm gonna go be pissed off at myself and neverending ( not that its his fault, it just makes me feel better.)

RE: "What does the element of children bring to a horror movie, both as killers and as victims?"

Dear Austin,

Children can bring various things to a horror movie. Depending on ones own association with children, for instance if you are a parent or have younger siblings etc.

They are sometimes the victims as in the exorcist, but it is generally more of an asociation with an older victim for the child character rather than them being killed or tortured.

So I'm going to focuss on the fear that chilldren bring to the screen in horror movies. They represent our own fears and weaknesses from the evil chilldren of movies such as Children of the Corn, Village of the damned and Halloween we have seen children not as we would generaly whilst visiting the park. It gives adult viewers something real and unexpected to be fearfull of.

I think shear shock of seeing someone you may feed and cloth and put to bed at night turning on you and ripping out your throat is probably one of the most fearfull aspects of horror.

Judge Alkytrio's query to Posher778 - "How do you feel that classic horror (1920s, 30s, 40s) influenced horror movies to come, and what kind of influence are they still giving today?"

You have till 1 PM EST today to think over your answer, and post it in this thread accordingly, Posher778.

Dear Honorable Judge Alky,

Classic horror has influenced the modern genre in many ways, some good, and some not so good. In the bad sense, many classic horror films have spawned great multitudes of spin offs and copycats that hope to either win a quick buck or surpass the original by stealing the concept. However, without classic horror, which sets the foundation for horror today, there would be no evolution of the genre. Ignoring the modern films that don't have any taste or style, decent horror films from this day in age generally have something reminiscient of a classic film. For example, John Carpenter uses chilling soundtracks in all of his movies. The soundtrack for classic films has always been important (Especially in silent films IE: Nosferatu ('22)). Just one example of how the style of classic films has influenced modern day horror. Without the classics, horror wouldn't have evolved as far as it has today. Even though many modern films are not original, they still take the basis of something that is a classic. For example:

The original Wolfman> An American Werewolf in London>Silver Bullet>Dog Soldiers.

They were all decent (or more than decent) films, and no doubt took a lot of the substance in their films from a classic. That is how I believe classic horror has influenced horror today.

RESULTS OF HUNTING SEASON ROUND OF 5

The gates were opened and we all waited. Posher778 ran in almost immediately, breathless and panting.

For a long time after that, nothing happened and nobody came in.

Then, suddenly, a slight tinge of red crawled through the gates. The Medics helped a patched-up Zero on to his feet and he slowly made his way to his bunker.

A groan made all of us turn towards the gates. Despare beckoned to the Medics who rushed forward and helped him to his feet, and he almost dragged his patchy self into his bunker and collapsed.

The medics glanced at their watches and went into The Zone to scour for the other two contestants...

and we turned the clock backwards to see what happened in it...

_____V_____
05-24-2008, 11:41 PM
- As soon as the five Finalists entered the gates, they broke off in different directions. Disease ran into some tree-foliage and broke through it towards the cave. It was hot and he needed to cool himself off, but he couldnt risk a dip in the river.

Zero looked on at him from the tree he had climbed. He took his M16 Machine Gun out and before Disease could stop to think, plugged him with 12 sharp shots of lead. Disease was blinded by the immense pain, but he could only endure the shots on his body. He fell down and crawled behind a tree, then took his HPs out. After a few minutes of patching his bullet wounds, he had 23 HPs left with him.

Disease heaved a deep sigh of relief. Fighting back the pain, he peered into the branches of the tree where Zero sat with his empty machine gun. Disease took his .44 Magnum out and carefully aimed at Zero, and rapidly squeezed the trigger three times. The bullets of the world's most powerful handgun ripped through Zero's butt and he fell down from the tree, bleeding. But Zero was alert. He rapidly swung from the ground to behind the tree, using it as cover, and applied 3 HPs to himself. Before Disease could track him down, an injured Zero swung over the nearest branches of the nearby tree and vanished from sight, with his remaining 21 HPs.

Disease picked himself up with a huge effort and walked on. He knew that if he was sitting at one place he couldn't defend himself, so he had to keep moving. Breaking through the bushes, he heard soft rustling just ahead of him. He sat down quietly, all senses alert.

Despare walked forward, just ahead of him, and looked around. Disease took his Magnum out, and aimed at Despare's head. Just then, a twig snapped under Disease's foot, just as he fired, and Despare swung around. He caught the shot on his shoulder, and Disease fired twice in succession again, aiming blindly. Both of those hit Despare on the thigh, and he fell down with a groan.

Gritting his teeth, Despare took his Rocket Launcher out and rapidly fired twice in Disease's direction. Both rockets blasted on either side of Disease and he was thrown backwards from the full impacts, numerous bloody wounds and cuts blossoming throughout his blackened body. He thudded onto a tree and was almost senseless from the excruciating pain. With a display of amazing effort, Disease took out his HPs and applied them to himself all over. 10 used HPs later, Disease collapsed down with fatigue and pain, and passed out.

Despare took 3 HPs out and healed himself in the meantime.

Then all went silent. Not a sound could be heard anywhere. Rapidly, darkness enveloped the entire Zone and it was getting close to the deadline.

Psycom5K sat in the darkness, in the hole. He had found a concealed hole in the ground just after running into The Zone, and he knew that it was the best place to hide his defenceless self. He was praying for the time to be over quickly, so that he could survive the endurance test in which he had no arsenal for himself. The sounds of battle made Psycom5K chuckle. The poor bastards, he thought delightfully, let them blast each other to bits...I will win this in the end. The thought of winning made his smile broaden into a wide grin, and he rested.

He woke up just minutes before the deadline. Checking his watch, he uttered a yelp of happiness. For it was 5 minutes to the deadline, and he was safe and snug. But just then, suddenly, a grenade came flying into the hole and poor Psycom5K had nowhere to go. The grenade blasted right in front of his face, and almost tore his jaw out of his skull. He felt blinded by the huge wave of pain as he took his HPs out to heal himself, cursing the person who did this to him. 7 used HPs later, he checked his watch and crawled out of the hole, a bloody and patched up mess.

Posher778 looked at him with a grin and waved, before throwing his empty Grenade Launcher away. Psycom5K took one look at him, and fainted.

All 5 Finalists are led back into The Justice Chamber and then asked to sit down.

I hereby address all 5 of you with a common question - You are the producer of the greatest horror film ever.
You have an unlimited budget.
Chose a scriptwriter (living or dead) for your project.
Chose 4 actors (living or dead) to star.
Chose a director (living or dead).
Name the title and provide the basic scenario.

Easy? I don't think so. Think it over, ponder your options carefully, and then PM me your answers. My suggestion - take a lot of time into thinking and planning out this particular answer.

Since its The Memorial Day Weekend, all FIVE of you have plenty of time till Monday, Noon EST to send your answers via PM to me.

I will then forward them off to random judges who will analyse, evaluate, and award you points on a scale of 0-10. If you score below 5, you are liable to be PUNISHED by the same honorable presiding Judge who is in charge of your answer.

All the best, Finalists!

1) Posher may have requested to shoot anyone who hadn't been shot or the person who had taken the least amount of damage, because he couldn't make up his mind (not sure if that would be allowed, tho)

2) Posher could have requested to shoot last, just for dramatic effect

Or many other possible scenarios...In any case, you've been shot, big deal...It's a game

And..V wouldn't show any favoritism or do anything that was 'out of line'...You have to take that into consideration...No matter WHAT the 'request' was, it was obviously well within the parameters of what would be considered acceptable...Have some faith in your game master who has done an amazing job with this game

You've come all the way to the end of this game...You've easily ridden it out many times when some others have had to actually work for it...From where I stand, you really have no reason to complain.

It's part of the "story" of the whole thing, it never has an impact on the game, quit whining. You saying you wouldn't pass out from a grenade? It was perfectly reasonable IF that was the request in the first place! Don't assume... it make you an ass.

Allright, I'll admit that I was wrong in thinking that V would do that, and V I'm sorry about that.

But it seems that lately Posher has been targeting me with some stupid personal bullshit, and I'm getting sick of dealing with it. And no I don't mean targeting me in the hunting zone because why would I complain about that? I mean that he always has some comment or says something that is just pointless bullshit aimed at me. Like say that one day I decided I didn't like you, so I flamed you every chance that I could, for absolutely no reason at all. I'm sure you would get fed up with me after a while. The reason that I am so pissed off about it is that he seems to be trying to bring it into the BR also.

It just seems that he keeps trying to keep the shit between me and him going.

If you channeled all that negative energy towards something constructive, maybe you could do a lot better on here, and in life too, Psycom.

Stop thinking that the world revolves around you...and trust me, life is worth living after all. ;)

As per the favoritism comment (ahem!), if I wasnt being fair then you wouldnt have won even that single challenge, which you did.

So my suggestion to you - get your head out of "the place where the sun doesn't shine", and be a little more "normal". I trust that wont be too hard.

Ok V a few things about that. One, I never said that you did infact show favoritism. Two, I appologized to you for what I said. And three, I don't think the world revolves around me.

Its just that for some reason me and him have been having problems. I asked him to pm me before to talk about it to try to resolve it, and he could have pm'd me and said that he didn't have any problems with me, or he could have simply said that in the thread when I asked him to pm me. That would have taken care of it, but time and time again he always has some shit to start with me, and I'm just getting sick of it. SO yeah, I admit I jumped the gun this time. Rayne, I understand what you mean. But as you said, you and I are two totally different people. And thats not counting the fact that you have ladybits and I have manbits.

And its not like I let everything get to me either. Its just that, I like to know why. I don't understand the reason posher and I seem to have a problem, or why it seems that posher is always trying to start shit with me(possibly, I could be wrong), and when somebody starts shit with me for what appears to be no reason at all, thats what gets me mad. I mean, when MM says something to me in that way that she normally does, I understand that she doesn't like me, and for the most part I don't like her. So it doesn't bother me, because I have the understanding of why we don't get along. But with posher I don't understand it, and that bothers me. Its just the kind of person I am.

Important Update

All the entries were submitted within the deadline, and sent off duly to 5 random Battle Royale Judges.

The first entry was submitted by Finalist Posher778 :-

"Scriptwriter- Stanley Kubrick
Director- John Carpenter

Starring- Jack Nicholson, Kevin Spacey, Meryl Streep, Ellen Page. Also with Cillian Murphy (costarring)

"The Downward Spiral of Malevolence"

An innocent young adult (Ellen Page), is called by Satan himself (Jack Nicholson) to aid in the destruction of humanity. Armed with a legion of demons, she must kill all that she loved (along with the rest of the world) in order to keep her soul. The film follows her descent into wickedness as she slays her mother (Streep), the pastor who tried to save her (Spacey), and her step brother (Murphy), then proceeds to become the devil's slave, doing whatever he commands.

Finale- The film ends a few years later, and Ellen has succeeded in destroying the world. However, Satan laughs in her face as he vanishes into the air, leaving her alone, isolated, the last person alive on the planet, to live alone with the guilt and hopelessness she created for herself."

This is what the esteemed Judge had to say in his verdict :-

"I have read your entry and graded it. My comments may seem subjective or somewhat arbitrary to you. I have considered them carefully. My judgement is final.

Pros-
Good Director- Carpenter would make the most of this story. +1
Good Cast- Nicholson, having played the devil before, is a natural. Kevin Spacey & Meryl Streep would both bring some well needed humanity to the story. +2
Plenty of epic action- +1
Possibility of some interesting demon characters. +1
She gets punished in the end +1

Cons-
Kubrick never wrote a script he didn't direct. Even with unlimited funds, he wouldn't do it. -1
The heroine's motivation is essentially selfish- she's only fighting for her own soul. This makes her an unsympathetic character. If there was a goal outside her own benefit it would make her more sympathetic. -1
Why does Satan call on HER to destroy humanity? This should be stated. If there is no reason, that should be stated. -1
The title is rather generic. It does relate to the story but it doesn't really grab the attention. -1

I started with a base of 5 as an "average" film. I added a point for every pro and subtracted a point for every con, ending with a final score of 7/10.

An above average film but not the greatest horror film ever made. It would do well with the 13-25 age demographic. It would also probably spawn a couple of sequels, each of them worse than the original.

A competent and somewhat inventive effort.

No punishment."

Congratulations Posher778!

You win 7 points (1 HP) and a six-shooter with 6 bullets for that very good effort! (as a normal reward)

"Micheal Caine
Gene Hackman
Jack Nicholson
Anthony Hopkins

Writer: James Gunn (mainly because of his work in the dawn of the dead remake)

Directer: George Romero of course (its a zombie movie)

Title: Sea of the Dead

Scenario: Four old friends who teach at various colleges around the country, decide to take a yaught to sea for a couple of weeks. WHen they get back they find something is wrong. The dead have returned to life and have taken over. After rescuing survivors and getting the story, which holds no exlanation why this happened, they find out there is an island that has been reported to be free of zombies, where other survivors have been fleeing to. The only problem is, they need fuel and supplies if they are ever going to make it to the island. Also later on in the story, they come across an oil rig, that is filled with zombies, showing them, that there is a possibility that the island, may not be zombie free at all, and they may be going to their deaths."

This is what the esteemed Judge had to say in the verdict :-

"I give him a 5 - the story didn't make me want to see the movie. No punishment, but no reward, either."

Congratulations Psycom5K!

1031

A Film by Charles Laughton

Written by Anthony Shaffer

"Synopsis:
College student Cara (Neve Campbell) convinces her French roommate Sylvia (Cecile de France) to accompany her on a visit to her isolated New England village in order to experience a real American Halloween. The girls leave college and drive through winding back roads, through the quaint village of Haddonfield and out to the country home of Cara’s parents. The girls share details of their lives in ‘bonding’ moments, which include Cara admitting that she had a twin sister who died when they were both seniors in high school.

Cara’s parents – Dad played by legendary Henry Fonda and Mom played by Piper Laurie – receive them warmly and begin making preparations for a night of trick or treat. But as the clock strikes 10:31pm, Dad comes into the girls room with an ax.

Act 2 of the film finds Cara and Sylvia fleeing the murderous Dad throughout the farmhouse and farm. A series of cat-and-mouse games ensue as the previously warm and stoic Dad turns into a sadistic stalker. The girls believe they are saved when Mom returns but, in the second twist of the film, Mom is carrying a chainsaw.

Fleeing the suddenly psychotic couple, the girls scramble – in Act 3 – through the woods and dusty roads back to the village of Haddonfield to seek help. But, once they arrive at Haddonfield they find horrific scenes of carnage as families have turned against each other and they find numerous teenage children running in fear from their suddenly murderous parents. Their shock turns to terror when they find that Mom and Dad have tracked them back to Haddonfield and they find themselves temporarily teamed up with other teenage children as they flee the various parents who have turned murderous. As the teens are picked off one by one, Cara and Sylvia find themselves once again alone.

The film’s climactic conclusion takes place in the police station as the girls find that there is no one to help them. As their fate seems sealed, Sylvia discovers the box of car keys and she and Cara make their way to the service garage in the hopes of finding a vehicle to escape. Just as they seem about to escape, Cara strikes Sylvia in the back of the head with a police truncheon and the French girl slumps to the floor as the screen goes black.

Sylvia stirs in the film’s final horrific moments and we find that she is strapped to the dining table at Cara’s home. Cara and her parents smile at the trapped girl as Dad sharpens his butcher knife. Cara tells Sylvia: “Don’t take it personally, I just didn’t have anymore sisters.” As Dad plunges his knife down the screen goes black.

Rationale:

I want this to be an ode to Shirley Jackson’s story “The Lottery,” though I would hope that the script wouldn’t really explain what was going on too explicitly. I also think the number 1031 could play up in interesting ways – the parent’s address is 1031, 1031 on Cara’s license plate, the terror begins at 10:31pm, etc.

I chose Andrew Shaffer because of his strong work on The Wicker Man as well as on Frenzy and even – to some extent Sleuth. I want the script to play up the shift from seemingly quaint village to madhouse.

I chose Charles Laughton because I always thought Night of the Hunter was brilliant and it saddens me that the poor reception of that ‘ahead of its time’ film made him give up his directing vision.

My one ‘stunt casting’ is Henry Fonda as “Dad”. I’m thinking of the middle aged Fonda of Grapes of Wrath. It might seem cheesy but I could really imagine him going from warm and loving father to sadistic psychopath.

Piper Laurie was so good in Carrie that I chose her as the lead female. I think she would be very good at transforming from June Cleaver into psychotic killer.

The two female leads are among my favorite actresses in horror. I think Neve Campbell is incredibly smart and strong and really loved her in the Scream films. I also like the trick it will pull on the audience when they find out she’s been stringing Sylvia along the whole time and the smug look on her face when we find out that she has sacrificed Sylvia to save her own life.

I guess a similar trick is played on viewers with my choice of Cecile de France as Sylvia. Since she played the killer in High Tension, it will be tricky to make her the victim in this film. I also thought she had the right combination of tough but vulnerable in that film (whatever you think of the ending).

I see the tone of this film being as grounded in reality as possible – I’m not looking for something ‘witty’ or ironic. I also like the theme of playing with family values and what we’re willing to sacrifice to keep our ‘normal’ lives."

This is what the esteemed Judge had to say in his very short but hard-hitting verdict...

"9/10. Best reward possible."

Woohoo...WAY TO GO, ZERO!!

You score 9 points out of a possible 10 (I grant you TWO HPs for that), and you also win a Grenade Launcher with TWO Grenades for that awesome effort!!

Temporary Employment

In a slumping economy Jonathan Fowler is searching desperately for a job. After finally landing the lowly position as a maintenance man at Clymer Industries things seem to be looking up for John. That is, until John finds out why he’s being paid so much just to take out the garbage and change a few light bulbs. Clymer Industries turns out to be a veritable warehouse of horror as John discovers that organ harvesting and genetic experiments are just a couple of the atrocities he’s been cleaning up after. What makes things worse, is that John really needs the cash, jobs aren’t easy to find today and his beautiful wife won't put up with an unemployed 'loser". So John goes about his business cleaning up but soon makes the grave mistake of letting what he knows slip in the company of the wrong men. Now John must run from his job, from his bosses and their gruesome “experiments”, and for… his life.

Directed by: David Cronenberg
Written by : Dennis Paoli
Starring: Marguerite Gance as "Juliette Fowler", Peter Lorre as "The Scientist", David Belle as "Johnathon Fowler", and Robert Mitchum as... you'll have to see the movie."

This is what the honorable presiding Judge had to say in their verdict...

"For Despare's pitch, I give an 6/10. It sounds like a semi-mindless, gory romp similar to Army of Darkness. I would question his choice of director, Cronenberg, for the job, but like to see a Peter Lorre casting.

No reward, and a small punishment in effect for an extreme lack of depth."

Congrats on winning 6 points (1 HP), Despare!

However, the esteemed Judge has decided to give you a small punishment for your lack of depth and foresight in the story, so you will be SHOT once by The Judge's gun...and the shot he chose is Standard!

Which means you have been shot once with 1 bullet, which negates your bonus winning HP. Hence, you end up with neither winning nor losing anything in this stage #2 of Round of 5.

And now, we go into The Hunting Zone, where someone awaits you this time around!

Just to defend the gory romp statement, notice that our hero and his wife were foreign... in my head there would have been a lot of social commentary not only about the economy but immigration, xenophobia, and the hardships of job hunting for foreigners. Oh, and the humor would be decidedly more cerebral than AoD. Like I said, I knew from the beginning that my lackadaisical synopsis wasn't enough to convey the true image I had. ;)

Fair judgment though, thanks. :)

David Belle's movement alone adds a unique twist on the monster genre and would really be cool to see but I already told another member here that it works much better in my head than on paper. :)

I could've and should've added more but I just didn't have the time or energy. :)

Should be a dangerous hunting season...

i figure as long as its every man for themselves, the two strongest will just keep getting bumped to the bottom of the HP list until someone dies.

Let's see what happened in this outing in The Zone...

RESULTS OF THE SECOND OUTING FOR ROUND OF 5 IN THE HUNTING SEASON

The gates are thrown open yet again and the Finalists trod back in silently. But this time...they are FOUR in number!!!

Which means, we have LOST 1 Finalist in The Zone!

The medics team rushes in to find the missing Finalist...and we turn the clock backwards to earlier in the day...

- Hunter Zero perked up. He thought he heard footsteps in the distance. A long, deep gaze through the trees and he saw nothing. Just then suddenly, Disease broke through the foliage and looked left and right. Zero remembed the three shots from the earlier outing he had received, and gritted his teeth. He took careful aim, and fired BOTH his grenades at Disease!

The twin blasts didnt give Disease any time to think. He felt helpless as his body was thrown back from the huge impact, numerous bleeding wounds breaking open all over his body. Falling down with a groan, he took his HPs out to heal himself, and used up all 14 HPs by the time he felt fit again.

- Hunter Posher778 waited till Zero was done. He knew Disease would use up all his HPs to heal himself, and now crawled forward with a smug grin. As soon as he got within range, Posher took out his six-shooter and rapidly shot Disease THREE TIMES!!

A tired and bleeding Disease could only utter a whimper as the three bullets thudded into his chest. He slid downwards, clutching his bleeding chest, and coughed up some blood...more pouring from his huge wounds.

Posher stood up, and walked over to Disease. He looked down at him and muttered defiantly "You are history, my friend", before aiming directly at Disease's forehead and squeezing the trigger THREE TIMES rapidly!!

DISEASE IS DEAD!!

Posher let out a whoop of joy and waved at Zero, who smiled and waved back. Unfortunately for Posher, all the firing had attracted a different kind of audience.

The Predator zoomed in from the treetops, and a blast broke through the high branches of a tree in Posher's direction. By a sheer stroke of luck, Posher bent forward and caught the plasma blast straight on his right thigh, which immediately spattered into a huge mess of flesh and blood.

Posher groaned in pain, and took his HPs out to heal himself. 15 of those made him all patched up, and he survived an otherwise fatal blast from The Predator.

I will let the FOUR remaining Finalists recuperate and rest through the night.

ROUND OF FOUR COMMENCES TOMORROW!!

HDC BATTLE ROYALE - ROUND OF 4

I welcome the FOUR Finalists - Despare, Zero, Posher and Psycom - to The HDC Battle Royale Round of FOUR.

Since the last Challenge was very descriptive and subjective, the Challenge for Round of FOUR is very much critical analysis, which will test your powers of analysing, dissecting, bashing, criticizing AND appreciating the genre we all love.

This is the common query given to ALL four of you :-

"If you had to remove one horror film branded a classic from existence which one would be it be? What would the consequences be for contemporary horror films accordingly?"

Intrigued? My suggestion - Think it over well, do a lot of analysis and research on the subject, and come up with a very good, witty and critically-dissected answer which can suitably impress the Judges.

All FOUR of you have to send me your answers through PMs. The deadline for the answers to be submitted ends on NOON EST tomorrow. Any answer submitted after that will NOT be included.

All the best!

It has generated a large % of the traffic here - both in posts by people wondering what the hell the name of that movie is, and as many if not more

Thanks, Gore. But the 5 esteemed Judges are doing great. :)

The deadline was up about one and half hours ago, and 3 entries were submitted...and sent to random Judges for their verdicts.

1 Finalist didnt submit their answer, and so stands to incur the Judges' wrath.

The honorable Judge is contemplating...once he makes his decision, his gun will speak.

The verdicts will be in soon too.

That was me that didn't send one in, I was going to send it in sometime early this morning, but last night I fell down a flight of stairs, broke my arm, and had to have stitches put in my head. I was in the hospital until about 5 in the morning and just went to sleep instead of finishing.

Yeah, I'm expecting that. I mean, I could have stayed home with a headwound and a broken arm and finished, and then went to the hospital, but I didn't so I guess I deserve it. The pills they gave me are good though...
