View Full Version : HDC Presents: 100 Years of Horror
The Flayed One
04-05-2011, 12:54 AM
Over the years, we've celebrated our favorite genre in many different ways. Discussions, games, tournaments and lists have all passed through our little website. Members come and go, and we've been able to compile quite a nice history throughout the process.
I think it's time to give a go to honoring the history of horror cinema as a whole. Yes, it's arguable that it's been a few more years than 100, but for the most part we'll be focusing our efforts on the history of the genre from 1910 to 2010.
This is a big project. Before anyone who remembers brings up the defunct Encyclopedia, I assure you that I can handle the lions share of the legwork myself. However, I can't do it alone.
I have set this project up in five different phases. Each one is different from the other in its own way. Each phase will also be revealed separately, and the whole picture will not come together until the final phase is complete. Some of them you will recognize from previous HDC projects, and others are new and have never been tried before.
so what are the phases? Well, as stated above, you'll uncover another after the previous one is complete. Sound interesting? Well, it begins now.
Phase one is simple: gauging interest. These projects are massive and time consuming, and nothing is more disappointing than starting a huge project and laying it out only to have hardly anyone participate. So you see the poll above? It's a very simple vote. Will you participate in some way, shape or form? There must be enough interest to continue, or phase one becomes end phase.
You may comment on your level of interest in this thread, or how much participation you're willing to commit to on a scale of one to ten. When it all comes down to the end, however, the number of yes votes is the determining factor as to whether I spend all of my free time crunching numbers and spreadsheets or sitting in front of my TV, contemplating what could have been. The choice is yours, HDC.

How many 'yes' votes gets phase 1 over the finish line?

Nice to see a couple of other people on board.
On a side note, I need a few judges. A lot of our lists have used them, and this one will be no different. How they are used will be reviewed later. If you are interested in being a judge and can spare some time and commitment, please PM me.
Now, what you've all been waiting for:
Phase 2: The 1920's through the 1940's
For these three decades, I've decided to stick with the ten best movies of the decade instead of year by year. Why? Because some years are very poorly represented, or practically not represented at all. Not a lot of movies were being produced at this time, and the medium was still new and experimental.
How this phase will work is as follows:
I will post a list of all horror movies I can find from these decades. Your job is to pm me your top 10, in no particular order, that you think deserve to make the list. The 10 movies with the most votes will represent the dawn of horror.
Let's get to it! First up: the 20's.
Please choose 10 from the following and pm me your list:
A Blind Bargain (1922)

Thank you for the notification of the omissions, NE! They have been added in, and duly so.
As far as earlier than 1920, I never said the project would be chronological. There will be a section for the dawn of horror.

Just for easy clarification, the deadline to vote for the first decade of horror is April 30th, 2011.

Here are some updates!
We have 13 lists.
We have all three judges.
There are four days left to vote for the 1920s.
Now that everyone is more into the swing of things, we'll start moving a little faster.
Schedule:
Phase 2: the 30's & 40's will run through the month of May. Each decade will have a two week voting period.
Phase 3 will be run through June. You'll have to wait to see what it is until June 1st:)
Phase 4 will the first three weeks of July, and will be very intense. Phase 4, for all intensive purposes, will be the final phase.
Presentation and conclusion will be the last week of July. The list will be posted, and a few special surprises will be revealed.
Keep a look out for a PM in your inbox. If you voted, you might be asked sometime within the next few months to do something special!
Thanks to everyone so far! This looks like it could be our best list yet!

Will there be no chance for debate? Because I certainly want to argue for The Phantom Carraige, which I assume few have seen.

I felt it a bit unfair as I only voted for films that I'd seen (save for London after Midnight). I'm definally lacking on my knowledge of very early cinema (horror or otherwise) - so i feel my vote probably really didn't represent the 'best' films of this period..
But then again this is a problem that will occur for other people in other decades too..

There will be room for tie breaking decisions. As far as debate goes, you can post your feelings here and try to sway other peoples votes, but the actual votes once cast will stand.
Don't forget, there will be special surprises that rear their heads during the duration of the project. I'd say more, but that would take away from the excitement of it all!

It's a problem inherent to all lists that are voted upon, whether it be by judges or the general populace. We do the best we can, and for the ones I host I do the best I can to stay impartial and let everyone sort it out for themselves.
That being said, as I stated there will be some special surprises that try to patch up some of the holes. Will they be perfect? Of course not, but I feel that each one of these that I host (and V probably feels the same way) get a little better as we try to fix the flaws in the processes.

Very valid point from Flayed.
Each of the compilations I have initiated has room for improvements and future suggestions. For example, for the Disturbing 100 list, several recommendations by Ferox last year were discussed by me and 3 other original Judges of that project. We all felt Ferox had some really good recs and watched them too, then accomodated them into the 100, at the expense of some of the original choices which we thought were tamer than the rest. The list thus keeps evolving, and the freshness of it is maintained. Right now we are looking at "A Serbian Film" for that 100, and once it gets the nod it will replace one of the original "comparatively much tamer" choices.
Due to certain circumstances, we have room for one more judge. Anyone interested, drop me a pm.
*raises hand*
...if nobody has any objections.
And I support NE's call for debate and discussions. A better film seen by few always scores more than an average film which is more popular. Projects such as this deserve top notch quality films, and that's how people come to know about them and hunt them down.
I mean, if we don't put some limelight on those forgotten gems, who will? :)

Now that the Vampire tourney & BR IV are drawing to a close, I will be diverting my attention to completing some of these projects which had immense potential but tapered off at the beginning.
Contrary to Flayed's title of the thread though, we shall be starting all the way from 1897 when Le Manoir Du Diable (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0000091/) was made, and regarded as the first ever horror film.
3fAZdC8vCVg
And, we shall expand our choices to picking the best films from every decade of horror, and stack them up together with plenty of Honorable Mentions. I am hoping we can chisel out 200 of the absolute finest examples of our genre and carve them in stone for the present fans, and for the generations to come.
Watch this thread for more details soon.

Does that mean your scrapping the previous votes?
Well, since the previous votes were sent through PMs to Flayed, I have to start from scratch. Not too bad, since he had only done the 20s and was in the process of going through the 30s.

Here is how we are going to go through this compilation...
First off, I humbly request all those 14 HDC members who sent in their lists of their chosen films from the 1920s/1930s to me. Please check your Sent boxes to see if you have a copy saved in there. If not (and you can't remember your choices), don't fret. We will do the 1920s/1930s again, this time by picking not 10 choices (10 is too low a number for a whole decade, not to mention the number of films which were made in the later decades).
We shall go with 20 choices from each decade, and then prune the list further until we have (at least) 10 representations from each decade to make it a solid 100.
And yes, there will be scope for argument for choices in this very thread. If you feel a particular film should be included (like neverending wanted to argue for The Phantom Carriage), you can put forth your case in the film's favor. If enough people are convinced with the argument, the film will be included.
Since the inception of horror films started from George Melies' shorts from the 1890s, they will be included in the master list of very-early horrors right from the 1890s through till 1919, a time span which saw some excellent short films such as Edison's Frankenstein, Le Manoir Du Diable, Bluebeard, etc. and some full length films as well - Der Golem, The Student of Prague, etc. We shall round off our final choices from the other decades with examples of these very-early horror cinema as Special Mentions. Of course, they will be bundled with the choices from the 1920s as well.
Stay tuned for the first Master List - from the 1890s through 1929.
One more point - If you haven't seen a particular film but have heard of it and realise it's importance in the genre, you can research on it and it's significance and include it in your list. It is not necessary for you to have seen a film to include it as your choice.
We start off soon.

Here we go - the first set of films from the 1890s, through the 1900s, 10s and the 20's, until 1929.
I have deliberately omitted those films which did not get any votes on IMDB from 1920 to 1929.
For the period of 1890-1919, I have kept out those films which got less than 100 votes, since most of those films are fantasy shorts made by George Melies and other vintage masters.

That's better for me I would probably want to re-edit the ones I previously chose anyway. Another quick question-can I include L'inferno/Dante's Inferno (1911 Short)? I would class it as horror just as much as the 20s version already on your list.

Sure. It's listed under Adventure/Drama/Fantasy on IMDB so maybe it skipped the master list I generated. It's a full length feature as well (first full length feature from Italy).
In fact, I will add it to the Master List now. Good rec.

Thanks I wasn't sure if it was classed as a full length feature or a short (but certinly NOT a drama I don't know why IMDB would have it as that-nothing dramatic happens in it) but I'll try to narrow my choices down to 20-won't be easy

The Sealed Room probably deserves a place on the list too.... D.W. Griffith short loosely based on The Cask of Amontillado. Another one that falls into the Drama category on IMDb but has plenty of gothic horror elements and is a good early example of tension and suspense.
Also wanted to add that alot of these old movies are readily avaliable on youtube and pretty decent quality, so well worth checking out for those that haven't seen them.... Still got a few slots to fill on my top 20, but should be done in the next day or so.

IMDB has a strange way of categorizing films. It tends to label mysteries and detective films as horror, when they are not. I don't think the Charlie Chan films belong on the list.
First draft of my list came to exactly 20 films, so no editing needed. Still, the 30s were one of the greatest decades for horror, and a lot of worthy entries will have to be overlooked.
If Maniac doesn't make it, I'm staging a protest.

IMDB has a strange way of categorizing films. It tends to label mysteries and detective films as horror, when they are not. I don't think the Charlie Chan films belong on the list.
And a lot of these films don't have a premise which is exactly horror, per se. Still, as a base for a master list, it's the only reliable source on hand.
If Maniac doesn't make it, I'm staging a protest.
Each movie nominated and ending the round with 1 vote will be given a chance. The chooser will be asked to put forth their argument/reasons for choosing that film, and they can ask for popular opinion based on their reasons. If more than 5 people are in favor, it will be marked. If not, it will be discarded.

Hmmm... Not sure if I've seen that many from the 20s, which is why I didn't resubmit it before. Let me check again. I was surprised at how many I had seen from the 30s.
To everyone who may be struggling with that decade (and the earlier films) - You don't necessarily have to have seen the movies you pick - as V said earlier in the thread - you can just have read about many of these films and their inpact on horror. Some though are public domain and are still widely available to watch on the internet. But some haven't survived and are completely lost but that shouldn't exclude them-they still had a huge impact on the horror genre as a whole.

Here's what V said:-
One more point - If you haven't seen a particular film but have heard of it and realise it's importance in the genre, you can research on it and it's significance and include it in your list. It is not necessary for you to have seen a film to include it as your choice.

Yep - I included a few I hadn't seen but had heard or read about. Or ones whose titles I thought sounded cool. ;)

17 films have made it in, by a vote percentage of over 50%.
We need to select 3 more films from the other two sections (preferably from the DEBATABLE section), and 6 Honorable Mentions from the rest.
I have posted the names of the HDC-ians who sent in their unique choices, i.e., those which got only 1 vote, and that vote was theirs only.
Please post your reasons for choosing your unique films, your backing for the MINORITY & DEBATABLE selections, and why you feel your chosen ones should be included in the 3 remaining spots and/or the 6 Honorable Mentions for this first period of horror.
OR
If everyone is in agreement, we can toss in the two films with 4 votes into the final selection. That way we end up with 19 films, and need to select ONE from the rest.
So, go ahead. Post your views.

La manoir du diable deserves inclusion by virtue of that fact that it's generally considered to be the first horror film. While it was made to be goofy and playful rather than frightening, it still contains many aspects of what would become part of the language of horror cinema--Gothic castle, bats, ghouls, ghosts, as well as some early special effects--all in one 3+ minute short.

Dante's Inferno (1911) Deserves inclusion because not only the first full length horror from Italy but because it successfully adapted the first on-screen vision of hell adapted from Dante's writings. Though it's more like a series of set pieces than a cohesive movie, it impressively portrays in graphic detail the many torments to be inflicted on it's residents. Inspired by the illustrations of Gustav Doré the original silent film has been restored and has a new score by Tangerine Dream. This gives the whole nightmare an atmosphere that is relentlessly unique and otherworldly that will still send a shiver down the spine of the viewer.

The Sealed Room: Kinda plays out more like a melodrama, loosely based on The Cask of Amontillado. Nice early example of gothic cinema. Pretty well edited for the time, which keeps the drama/ tension flowing which in itself is a pretty awesome achivement considering there are only a handful of static shots across the 11 minuites run time. Its quite dark for the time and the tension builds nicely and its all well put together. Great movie from a great director, check it out here if you have a spare 10mins:

OK, now do I think its worthy of one of the final spots? I'm not so sure looking at the competition... The Student of Prague is amazing and I expected to see that in the final cut without debate, along with Waxworks. The Golem, not a huge fan but totally expected to see it in the final cut.
Skimming through the list though if I had to get behind just one film to make the final cut that is looking like its going to fall short, it would totally be 400 Tricks of the Devil George Melies deserves a spot on the final cut and could easily have two or three in there. 400 tricks is my personal favourite, but Le Manoir du Diable is equally deserving. Either way I really think he needs a little love as a genuine pioneer of visual effects which plays such a huge role in the horror genre.

Holy cow! I just realized A Page of Madness is up for debate.
Okay, so this one really deserves a spot. It's one of the first films, as far as I know, to use a "pure cinema" approach to exploring the subjectivity of madness, creating expressive visual poetry of a distorted and frightening world. With surreal imagery and experimental editing techniques, A Page of Madness is a haunting, insane masterpiece, surely unique in not only its time, but even to this day. I strongly encourage anyone not familiar with the film to watch it on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zud4gj9FYzU
Unfortunately a lo-res copy of a terrible transfer, but even still it's hypnotizing.
It would really be a shame for such an incredible, singular film to be excluded from the list.
I know Roshiq will back me on this one!

Not the best quality but you can check out Dante's Inferno (1911) here

I don't think I explained before that not only is it the first Italian horror film, it's also the world's oldest surviving feature length film.

I'll back Dante's Inferno (1911). In addition to what Fearonsarms said, it's also significant in being an adaptation of Dante's work, which would go on to inform horror cinema in countless ways.

We need to select FOUR more films from the other two sections (preferably from the DEBATABLE section), and 6 Honorable Mentions from the rest.
I have posted the names of the HDC-ians who sent in their unique choices, i.e., those which got only 1 vote, and that vote was theirs only.
Please post your reasons for choosing your unique films, your backing for the MINORITY & DEBATABLE selections, and why you feel your chosen ones should be included in the 4 remaining spots.
OR
If everyone is in agreement, we can go for FOUR choices from the FIVE films with 4 votes into the final selection. That way we end up with our selected 20.
So, go ahead. Post your views.

I would like to see Son of Frankenstein make the cut. It's my favorite of the franchise - I've always been a big fan of Basil Rathbone.
neverending

Son of Frankenstein is a MUST. It completes the Frankenstein trilogy, and contains a lot of the imagery that we remember.
The Old Dark House is also a must. All star cast and a tremendously wicked script combine to make a movie well worth watching.
The Ghoul and The Invisible Ray both have great performances from the King of Horror.
I'd also like to argue AGAINST Revolt of the Zombies. It's a really crappy low budget piece of junk.

MINORITY
The Black Room (1935) - roshiq
The Man They Could Not Hang (1939) - roshiq
The Man Who Lived Again (1936) - roshiq
The Walking Dead (1936) - roshiq
I would love to see the above 4 on the final list...all were great treats for the Karloff fans. Except the Black Room, the rest 3 were 3 best Karloff's Mad Scientist films...I just loved them, The Man They Could Not Hang comes with a story that may be fairly conventional and routine in today's genre standard, but there are some splendid moments in the house of Karloff menacing his "guests" and letting each one know how long he or she has to live; somewhat like a intriguingly take on Agatha Christie's timeless classic "Ten Little Indians/And Then There Were None".
The Man Who Lived Again aka The Man Who Changed His Mind was another highly entertaining addition to the king's Mad Scientist movies. And this time not only Karloff but also Frank Cellier, as Lord Haslewood, walks away with the picture whenever the duo is on screen. And with somewhat like a film noir mystery & dark atmospheric background, The Walking Dead was highly original in its premise that starts off a bit slowly but soon builds itself to a beautiful, memorable conclusion.
But if I have to pick one, then just for being a good Karloff fan, I'd pick The Black Room; though it comes with a quite traditional set up but it showcases one the best & pretty rare performances from (If I'm not mistaken, I think this is the only film where) the King of Horror on a double role of playing twin brothers: one good-one evil! And that makes it a must see, IMO.

V sorry to be a nuisance but can I change my backing of The Devil's Daughter? I only backed it (which I should have said so before) because it was the first horror movie to feature an all black cast. So though it was very significant, if you take it as a movie it is pretty bad and doesn't really deserve inclusion just for that. I don't think anyone else will vote for it anyway.

12 films have made it in, by a vote percentage of over 50%.
We need to select EIGHT more films from the other two sections (preferably from the DEBATABLE section). 6 Honorable Mentions from the rest to be chosen later.
I have posted the names of the HDC-ians who sent in their unique choices, i.e., those which got only 1 vote, and that vote was theirs only.
Please post your reasons for choosing your unique films, your backing for the MINORITY & DEBATABLE selections, and why you feel your chosen ones should be included in the 8 remaining spots.
OR
If everyone is in agreement, we can toss in the SIX choices which got 4 votes each (right now in the DEBATABLE top), and proceed to choose TWO more from the rest. That way we end up with our selected 20.
So, go ahead. Post your views.

I agree with the 6 with 4 votes. I also advocate for The Lodger. Laird Cregar's performance as Jack the Ripper is chilling. It's one of the few Ripper films that isn't gimmicky in some way. It treats the case in a straight forward manner.
I would vote to eliminate both And Then There Were None and Rebecca, as neither of them are horror movies. One is a murder mystery and the other a noir thriller. For the same reason I would eliminate The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. It's what we would now call a paranormal romance.
I would chop out both zombie movies, just because they're really awful films.

If you vote for the six with 4 votes then you are casting six votes out of the EIGHT V said we could cast. Add to that your vote for the lodger and the votes you are trying to cast against films then that is a TOTAL OF 12 VOTES you are casting in this post. V said we could only vote for or against EIGHT films.
Or have I misunderstood this:-

There's no voting involved here. You can give your opinion as well as to which films can be included/excluded, out of the ones in contention.
We just need to select 8 films from the remaining list, however in the majority.
Any one else willing to back neverending's support of my move? This way, we can seal 6 spots out of the remaining 8, and look to choose 2 from the rest.

I forgot about the 40s debate.... I'll definatly back The Lodger and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man which I think should both definatly be in the final cut. Also happy to second any of the other 4 vote films, all solid films.

I would agree on Removing:
Rebecca (1940)
And Then There Were None (1945)
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)
I don't really think they really fall into what I would consider the Horror realm.
I would back:
Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943)
The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942)
I would also argue I feel "The Invisible Man Returns (1940)" should be up higher. While Vincent Price was in Tower Of London, to me, The Invisible Man Returns really starts his career in Horror and set him on the path to becoming the Horror Icon he became. It's hard to do a movie where the main character is invisible where we are forced to rely on the actors voice to convince and entertain. Vincent Price with his unique voice gave us a performance to cherish.
I would also argue for The Mummy's Hand (1940). While inferior to the original, it was a new idea that allowed the series to continue on in a whole new direction. Dick Foran and Wallace Ford are like a preview of the later Abbott and Costello movies with their comedic performances and while you could argue that adding the "comedy element" to a horror sequel may have started with Bride Of Frankenstein, I think more of what we see today came from ideas that started from this movie.
The others I would back are too low to ever go anywhere but I wanted to at least throw those ideas out there.

I'd actually like to back The Beast With Five Fingers, one of the cleverest and most stylish horror films of the decade. A strong, relatively early example of the stylish, low-key look that helps define gothic horror films.

This was the hardest job so far, mainly because of the preponderance of sci-fi films in the list. Just for my own prsonal methodology, in order to cut down on numbers, I rejected outright all comedies, and then limited myself to one film per series, such as Hammer's Dracula and Frankenstein films. I tried eliminating all films which would be considered primarily science fiction, such as The Day the Earth Stood Still and War of the Worlds, but I still found myself including other science fiction fare such as Godzilla and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

I agree with Neverending on this one.
In the 1950's the new horror was Science Fiction. Giant Monsters like Godzilla, Them! and even The Blob were the new "horrifying" monsters. So, I too tried to eliminate what I considered "General Science Fiction" and kept those that I felt the horror element was prominent within the Science Fiction.
The 50's will probably the toughest decade.

I gotta say, if we're still going over the 40s stuff you guys should get some kids and some adults together and rewatch The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Bing Crosby is great, it's spooky, the animation is fantastic... it's just one of my favorite horror pieces of all time. Sure, it's a lighthearted take on the original story, but it's held up better than most of the films on that list.

I'm pretty late to this discussion and not sure if my vote counts, but I totally agree. If we're talking about the history of horror, this one is a must.

Think that era is closed now, La manoir du diable did make the final list however, so its all good.
Right now I think its the 1940s that's up for debate, so you are free to give your opinions on any of those and also no reason why you can't start putting your lists together and sending them into V.... I'm sure V will be along to give a recap of how things work, but if you are reading through the thread anyway you will work out whats going on, just a case of sending your list to V.

Though IMDB only categorized it as a "Drama", but understanding the influence or contribution it has on the genre, shouldn't we consider Jungfrukällan aka The Virgin Spring on the the list?

Though it might be overlooked among such a wealth of classic films, I want to urge people to remember Targets.
Its low key story of an aging horror movie star disarming a sniper at a drive in theatre neatly encapsulates the transition from old school to modern horror not only in films of the era, but the world itself at that time.
Peter Bagdonovich burst upon the scene with this film, and after the brilliant The Last Picture Show, he never made another great film. This is also Boris Karloff's last great performance. He fretted over filming the long speech in the hotel room, but after a few stiff drinks with director Bagdonovich, he nailed it in one take.
This low budget masterpiece is a great statement of its times. It IS horror, and it transcends horror. Please include it in your lists.

I agree with the quote. The film is really good and is an interesting satire for the time, especially considering Boris Karloff plays an old horror movie actor from the 1930s and 1940s who does not like where horror movies are going (which is surprisingly similiar to how the real Boris Karloff probably was). I watched it on Netflix and then bought it for thirty dollars. I highly reccomend it, as well.

Though IMDB only categorized it as a "Drama", but understanding the influence or contribution it has on the genre, shouldn't we consider Jungfrukällan aka The Virgin Spring on the the list?
It has influenced films, yes, but as a standalone film I don't think it's horror. But, I leave this open to debate. If enough are in favor, it will be included in the Master List.

Thank you to fortunato for submitting the 2nd list of choices from the 60s, and thanks to Sculpt for sending in a small list for the 60s as well.
We would love to see your other choices too, Sculpt, not only for the 60s but from the 50s as well.
Let's keep them coming, folks!

I had to agonize over this one! My initial list contained 23 entries. I easily eliminated 2 low budget sleaze-fests, which, while both great films that perfectly exemplified horror films in the 60s, just weren't the true top-notch quality of the others. It then came down to a contest between Fall of the House of Usher and The Haunted Palace.
House of Usher lost the contest for a couple of reasons- I know a lot of others will include it on their lists, and I knew I wanted Tomb of Ligeia on my list. It covers the same themes as Usher, and features one of my all time favorite Price performances.
Many, many, many, many really, really good films didn't make the cut. I grew up in this era, and let me tell you, it really was an exciting time for a young horror fan. Society in general at that time was experiencing a lot of loosening of boundaries and experimentation. This showed up a lot in horror films. Horror was in, in a big way.
The classic films were liscened for TV for the first time, and every major market had their own horror host on Saturday night TV. ESP, UFOs. ghosts and other such topics were the daily fodder of talk shows and magazine articles.
Combined with that, the TV news was full of real life horrors like the Viet Nam War and the Boston Strangler. Horror films reflected this in films such as Psycho, Repulsion, Witchfinder General, and Targets. We had met the enemy and he was us. Humans were the monsters. Hammer's Evil of Frankenstein revealed a truly MAD scientist who was a cold and evil man. He was far more frightening than the creature he created.
That was the legacy of horror films in the 60s. Humanity was exposed as the monster. Sure, there were exceptions- The Birds- but this was the dominant paradigm.
Many will point to the 30s or the 70s as the greatest decade for horror films, but for me, it will always be the 60s.

House of Usher will be in my final 20, it's possibly my favourite Corman movie and my favourite Price performance. Roderik's lament on the Usher family history is Price at his best.
That said, I still only have about 12-15 movies nailed down on my list and another 10+ fighting it out for the final spots.

Yah, I know Ligeia is a real underdog compared to the much more popular Usher. I just had to put it in there as it's a favorite of mine.

I'll send my list within a day or two. As some of you can guess how tough this is turning out for me as being a huge fan of 60s Horror movies. I've decided to re watch few of them, particularly some films of Corman-Poe-Price collaborations. I love them all but I've already come to a point of realization that I've to eliminate some of them from my final list. So this will be a very unique list for me as I've been giving much thoughts & time before making each & every entry. And I can only tell you now, there's been some big names already dropped out!
Anyway, thanks to V for putting us into these awesome challenges to make a list out of best of the best. I'm loving it. :)
Btw,while working on it other night, I've already make a draft of 70's movies and surprisingly that's so far turning out much easier than 50s & 60s!

IMDB's Search function lists it under Mystery/Sci-Fi, so I guess that's why it got excluded from my Master List compilation.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention, realdealblues. Both films (that and it's sequel) duly added to the Master List now.

Big thanks to Kandarian Demon for submitting the list of choices for the 60s.

And here's the third Master List from the Second Era.
Be reminded that entries for the 50s are still open till the weekend, when we sit down to finalise the 50s, and entries for the 60s are open till next weekend.
THIRD SET OF THE SECOND ERA - THE 70s
Here's the third set of films from the second era of horror, through 1970 till 1979.
Since it's a very popular decade for horror, I have omitted those films which scored less than 100 votes on IMDB. We still have over 770 entries to choose from.
Again, those who face the trouble of the translated titles are advised to make a trip to IMDB, copy-paste the said title into the box and click on Search. The corresponding English title can be found on the film's IMDB page, such as:-
Non si deve profanare il sonno dei morti (1974) - Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (aka) The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue
Non si sevizia un paperino (1972) - Don't Torture A Duckling
La noche del terror ciego (1972) - Tombs of the Blind Dead
I corpi presentano tracce di violenza carnale (1973) - Torso
Again, a few noteworthy TV films/series, shorts & documentaries have been added.
