Oh, and regarding The Wheel of Time series . . . I got through the 4th book and that was as far as I got. I even bought all the books, but I just kept getting lost with so many characters and not getting back to a particular story line for hundreds of pages drove me to exasperation.

Regulators and Desperation--both excellent reads.

At the moment I'm reading Christine Feehan's "Dark Demon" it's one of many that she has written it is a different and more romantic twist on Vampires.

I’m currently in the middle of Museum of Terror Vol. 2 by Junji Ito. I’d read these Tomie stories years ago, but hadn’t come back to them in a while. I’m finding them to even stranger, even scarier, even better than the first time.

This week, I’ll dive into Cerebus Vol. 9: Reads and probably Let It Be, by Colin Meloy, his memoir related to the Replacements’ album of the same name.

Hi Everyone,
I am a newbie, and the author of Conceiving Evil, if you haven't read it yet, grab a copy from Amazon or one of the many other online book clubs, or just ask your local bookstore to order you a copy. But you better hurry, because John Tyler a demon in human form may be hunting for you. Look behind the door, under your bed, or over your shoulder into evil's eyes.
Come by and check out my website sometime.http://www.freewebs.com/humanneeds2003/

Just started "Waiting" by Frank M. Robinson.

I just finished "The Terror" by Dan Simmons. Here's my review (currently posted on mybooklist.com also):

An adventure tale set in the mid-1850s. A lengthy read but worth the journey. Filled with an interesting cast of unique characters, The Terror is a fictional account of two sailing ships which become locked in the ice for three years in their quest to discover the North West Passage. The crews of the vessels must survive against incredible cold, diminishing rations, their own ability to maintain hope and an unknown monster that stalks them from across the ice. A good read for those who like survival-adventure tales but this one ends with an interesting twist that tips to the fantastical. I would have rated it better but for the fact this book could have benefited from some aggressive editing. At one point, the author goes on for several pages just listing all of the survivors of the two ships—-a recounting that serves only minimal value. At nearly 800 pages, this tale could have been equally effective with a little judicious pruning.

Sabriel by Garth Nix
More of a children's fantasy... I read it recently.
An entire day wasted.
It was pretty good for that reading level.
Basically about necromancy and killing zombies in a mid-evil type country.
Kinda cute.
They should have added more gore & some more intamacy between the two lovers.
Still, for that reading level, I understand.
Good books are ruined for the young.
Meh... 6/10

Oh, ditto on the "Nanny Diaries". I loved that book and have read it twice. I was a nanny myself about 4 years ago. I never went through anything that nanny did though. Also around last summer or so, I saw where they were going to make a movie from that and they were showing a scene being made by Scarlett Johnhansen(sp?). Yes.
I liked some of it.
Loved it's symbolism.
I just hated it as a whole.
It really wasn't that good.
Then again I'm picky when it comes to books and movies.

I'm hoping I'll like East of Eden.
Steinbeck seems like he has talent.
I'm just hoping for the one where it blossoms.

I think in some ways Of Mice and Men comes across as boring, though I happen to find it to a very honest novel. The characters are very well drawn out, considering the length of the work, and the ending is inevitable and tragic, but apparently it is easy to feel a kind of disconnect with the events leading up to it (from what I have heard other people say, I do not feel this way, I find it very moving, very sad, and I actually like Steinbeck's straightforward style).

East of Eden is FAR more entertaining actually, there is so much going on in that novel, and the characters are so very complex. I also think Steinbeck created just about the perfect example of a sociopath iin this novel. Steinbeck definitely did approach his characters in a different way here.

Hi there Nova! Its been awhile, good to see you as well. :)

Just started The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillippa Gregory. Not bad, a historical novel that centers around Mary Boleyn, who I know next to nothing about, considering her sister Anne's story tends to overshadow hers (hence the title). I did know Henry supposedly had an affair with her before his marriage to Anne. That man sure did get around.

Okay, OKAY....;) I am not sure how much it is educating me, as it probably has very little to do with reality and is more about how she wishes it would have happened..... That's the beauty of a historical novel. But it is actually a subject I know a little about, because I find it a particularly interesting time period.

Also read The Exterminators Vol.1 : Bug Brothers. A comic about exterminators, genetically mutated cockroaches, and a global conspiracy. A lot better than I’d expected it to be.

Stiff by Mary Roach
"For two thousand years, cadavers--some willingly, some unwittingly--have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They helped test France's first guillotines, answering the question, "Is the severed head aware of its circumstances, however momentarily?" They helped evaluate the army's new rifles in 1904, standing as targets before researchers' guns. They've ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there, alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet, sundered way."

It's really interesting and strangely enough kind of funny.

This week I read Michel Houellebecq’s book-long essay on Lovecraft: HP Lovecraft, Against the World, Against Life, which was very good and provided a lot of insight into Lovecraft’s development as a writer, specifically connecting some dots that I hadn’t considered before. A good, quick read.

Spear of Destiny by Trevor Ravenscroft. it's about the Occult Power behind the Spear of Longinus and how Hitler attempted to use that power to conquer the world. that's the synopsis on the cover anyway. it's really much more complicated than that and gets into a lot of stuff about the Holy Grail and alchemy. I highly recommend it to any whacko conspiracy theorists such as meself.

One of the very few cases that I thought the movie was far better than the book it was based on, the characters weren't nearly as sympathetic, and I think the writing is very weak. It was interesting to read and compare the two, for sure. But I never picked up another Benchley book.

still reading "the Spear of Destiny" by Trevor Ravenscroft. it's a supposedly true book about how Hitler got hold of the Spear of Longinus (the spear which, supposedly again, pierced the side of Christ) and attempted to use its power to conquer the world. apparently the spear has some sort of supernatural powers. it also delves into a bunch of "grail theory" type stuff and even some alchemy.

it's a very heady read, and one that I am taking slow so that I can really grasp all of the concepts that are discussed.

I'm trying to read Swan Song by Robert McCammon and I just cant seem to get into it.Can anyone tell me "Does it get any better"? It is awful boring to me,but I'm only in maybe the third chapter.

I've heard others criticize McCammon for his rather slow pace in setting the story, but I think this is a good technique to immerse the reader and provide tension. "Stinger" gave me similar trepidation, however, McCammon is quite good, so stick with it.

On a different note, I started Clive Barker's "The Great and Secret Show" last night. It's not all that scary, but Barker's writing is addicting.

Going to find a copy of Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, so hopefully I will be able to finally read this book.

I just read it a few weeks ago. Classic Vonnegut.
