THE CHOSEN by Edward Lee. Decent little read about a restaurant manager who goes to work at an inn where mysterious things are going on. Lots of raunchy sex and pretty violent in parts, but good character development and liking it so far.

Neat, I read that. It was ok, but its neat because I think it was a small press release? Not too many people read those.

I like small press books myself...sometimes you just gotta take the plunge! Nice to know someone else read it!
CAME A SPIDER by Edward Levy -he also wrote the quite entertaining THE BEAST WITHIN. So far, pretty good, but very similar to all the late 70's "Nature Strikes Back!" books.

Just stopped reading The Devil Rides Out by Dennis Wheatley. It may be well researched, but I do not see how this book gets a lot of accolades. The prose is dull. The characters simple, no depth. The brief appearances of monsters are decent, but are very brief. I can get passed the african fetishism, classism, sexism, and stereo-typing of Americans(it was published in 1935 England), but there is very little quality to this writing. By comparison in various Lovecraft stories all of these things were there, but the stories were fantastically written and so forth.
I could not finish it. I came to a point that was so obvious in coming and the type of stupid things we see people do in horror films do to further the plot. It took me a month and a half to read 183 pages, but I wanted to try to finish it. I gave up. Pass on this thing.

I'm now starting Personal Darkness by Tanith Lee. Its the second book in the Blood Opera Sequence. The first Dark Dance was very good. 9/10. The cover makes it look like its about sex, but its not. I highly suggest it.

Now the forward in my book said the original print's cover was crap, but I actually really like it if that's what edition you're showing! Maybe because I prefer a more modest print size and a painterly (at least that's what it looks like in the photo) art cover.

Mine is just flashy words covering the whole damn thing so why even bother with cover art. Explains why they slapped on a photo shopped image of trees behind it.

Mine was a small reprinting of the original. Part of Cemetary Dance's book of the month club, not sure if they're still doing those. Something like 1000 printed or what have you. Got some great books that cost a lot from doing their much cheaper book of the month club. Got a lot of bad books too. : )

Which reminds me of Prodigal Blues by Braunbeck. Got that from the club too and it was outstanding. I posted about it here:

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
by Jules Verne

https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1345280756l/2619685.jpg

This was my first time reading Jules Verne as an adult and I really enjoyed it. This edition contains a few color illustrations by Joseph Ciardiello. Verne gives very detailed descriptions that for modern readers may slow down the pacing of the story. Still visually he paints a vivid tapestry for the reader as he takes us on this absolutely epic underwater adventure. While there are few main characters the comradery between M. Aronnax, Ned Land and Conseil is well developed and at times very heartfelt. Few other characters in fiction are as interesting as the enigmatic Captain Nemo and his Nautilus. I'm looking forward to checking out the sequel "The Mysterious Island".

Not to my recollection. I'll add them to the list. Thanks, Mike 8)

Sadly I'm not the best reader (I can read just fine but my attention span is just 'no'), so my werewolf book library is fairly small. Considering how hard it is to find good books containing the topic of lycanthropes, it's actually a fairly impressive little collection if I do say so myself.

This is the first Agatha Christie novel I've read and what an incredible 'whodunit' it is. The mystery is interesting, the cast rich with colorful characters and the ending reveal was fantastic and unexpected. I am definitely interested in reading the other adventures of detective Hercule Poirot as well as more of Christie's other work.

Stopped reading Incarnate by Ramsey Campbell. Not much was happening half way through except lots of exposition on the people in the story. And that wasn't interesting either. Cut-out characters.

Now rereading Dark Fall by Stephen Laws, read it about 10-12 years ago. An original idea, well through out and presented. Action right keeps happening. Very enjoyable. The writing itself isn't fantastic, but its not too bad. I recommend this book, 6/10 which is a decently high ranking from me. Its about a certain kind of storm which causes people to disappear. Which is a simplification so I do not provide much spoiler info. Also a lot of police procedural stuff. It takes place in the UK...forget which city though. Somewhere in north England I think.

So far its alright. The writing is decent, but when you get to a certain point you realize its just jumping on a popular theme. So that was disappointing. Still its worth a read as light reading.

Dangerous Angels by Kathe Koja

She's so amazing. I have yet to read anything of hers that doesn't impress me a huge amount. A quote from this book:

“There was this girl, Antonia, she thought that, that all clowns were angels, that every clown she saw was somebody's guardian angel. It was,” sweet, “horrible, It was really horrible because every time she saw a clown, even pictures of a clown, she would say 'Is it yours? Is it yours? Is it yours?'” Louder, “Is it yours? is it yours?”

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius."

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

Very disappointing. The novel's blurb sounds interesting.
I enjoyed very much Mike Carey's Felix Castor series. The Steel
Seraglio was alright. So I expected a decent read here. It wasn't
obviously. The writing is mediocre. However this can be ignored if
the story and characters are worth it. They're not, they're card board
cut outs. Very little depth, filling generic roles we've seen lots of times before. Sympathetic woman. Confused child. Mean/detached doctor/nurse. Rugged, mean Sargent. Etc. As you read the book the author takes two of the currently, probably, most popular themes for the past 5 years and used them. The obvious first one is post-apocalyptic. The second is explained about 1/5th into the book so I won't ruin it if you decided to read this book. The story is not original. The story is not a good interpretation of an often used idea. Pass on this one.

TERRORS OF THE SCREEN-Frank Manchel. As said previously, found this at the little library at Fort Baker CA (right across from San Francisco Bay) in the summer of 1971. My nine year old self had about five FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND and one CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN and had some back history with actors/films, but this gave me a crash course from the turn of the century up to 1968 with films/people I had never heard of like THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI, NOSFERATU, M, James Whale and Val Lewton. It also helped that my local CREATURE FEATURES was having a "90 Day Freeze" showing Double Features of mainly old Universals at about the same time.

After seeing a copy for sale on CREEPY CLASSICS.COM, I had to place an order, probably more for nostalgia sakes than anything else. While I still enjoyed it very much (especially all the photos which so captivated me back then), found it very academically written, almost a McFarland type tome, without the sense of fun many horror histories benefit from. Some goofs and a tendency to throw in spoilers (especially PSYCHO) lessened the books qualities. But to be fair, no Internet back than, so he was probably relying on memory/notes and this is one of the earlier Horror film histories that I know of (Manchel lists some recommended books in the back. some of which I liked very much, especially the Carlos Claren ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE HORROR FILM). So worth checking out and while it hasn't aged well. still takes me back to the little boy who was embarking on a new, exciting and lifelong love affair.

Just finished this. I don't want to describe the plot because its the second book in the Blood Opera Sequence. The first was very good and this one was almost as good. I highly recommend the first and then second while not highly recommended is still recommended.

I posted about this before, but I'll summarize the first book because the summaries I've read on the web are very misleading. Lots of 'sex' implied which is there, but this is not an erotic novel of any sort.

The main character Rachaela lives a very quiet life due to a strong misanthropic mind. She works in a quiet job making just enough to keep an apartment, radio for classical music and book for her and her Cat. She's not timid/shy/etc., just does not like being around people.
She's contacted by a man representing her father. She never her knew her father. Her mother raising her alone. She is then drawn into this new family.

It doesn't sound exciting I guess, but it is written really well and the story is surprisingly engaging and unusual. I was impressed.

Bloofer for some reason I have this feeling you'd like this series, but I couldn't say why. If you give the first book in the series a try let me know what you think. : )

First half: Very very good stories using themes in religions and horrifying them. Not to make statements socially/religiously, but just taking these themes and twisting them. Really excellent writing/ideas.

Second half: Scholarly essays. One on angels and demons and the possible origins of their myths/religious integration and how they're common themes throughout religion in general. This essay while maybe well researched, is a dull read. Also Cardin limited his scope to the middle east. No comparisons to African, Celtic, north/south/central American ancient religions, etc. It was a very western centric essay.
The other's didn't interest me. One that is a scholarly essay on Romero's movies. Sounds cool, but its just more the same as the above. The Last is about how a certain part of the bible can be read as horror....doesn't the entire thing, new or old, read like an epic horror novel?

edit:

Forgot, I wanted to give a quote from one of the short stories:

"God looks out through each of our eyes, an abyss of insatiable hunger and infinite teeth, and the dark light of His consciousness makes each of us a lamp that illuminates a new terrible truth."

I'm reading the Shirley Jackson classic Haunting of Hill House.

I might sound crazy saying this, but it actually reminds me of Richard Laymon. There is no sex or gore, and the writing is far more poetic, but it has that same, "getting to know likable characters bonding through creepy events" feel that I used to love in his books.

A collection I'm chpping through at the same time is Wide Carnivorous Sky by John Langan. Very good, scary stories about Zombies, Werewolves, Vampires, Edgar allen Poe and Lovecraft.

The Legend of Hill House reminded me of Richard Matheson. Not sure why though. Such a good book.

I'll check out the collection, ty.

Very poor. Its all poetry, but the language is boring. Basically some sentences cut up into a poem form. No use of format beyond that. The pictures are poorly altered photographs. All around very disappointing, something I'd ask for my money back.

The General in his Labyrinth by Gabriel García Márquez.

Fantastic read. Márquez is always fucking amazing. This is a somewhat fictional accounting of the last year or so of Simón Bolívar's life. It has him reflecting on his past, what the future will be. Has a dreamlike feel to the story, which Márquez is known for. I highly recommend it. 8/10

About half way through The Dead Sea Games. Pretty legit Zombie book. I have read a ton and its one of the few that takes a look at a post zombie apocalypse in New York city, but there is no hope of winning or getting away. It concentrates on a group who managed to survive what they call the emergency and are now living on the rooftops as the never ending sea of the dead flows through the streets below. Its pretty damn good.

What Strange Stars and Skies by Avram Davidson

A collection of Davidson's short stories. He's very adept at writing how people speak or what they say for various parts of the world. He's one of those writers that knew so much information and could play with it in his stories. This particular collection of stories were either humorous and fun or very dark. If you haven't read his short stories you must! 8/10

The Cipher by Kathe Koja

A reread for me. Basically a nothing guy and his sometimes lover find a hole in the storage closet of his building. Light shining into it reveals nothing, its just there. Obviously things happen involving "The Fun Hole." Koja is one of my favorite writers. Her stories and characters are enthralling; the writing is insanely good. This book is all about horror. 9.5/10 Here's a quote from the book I typed up for my quote file:

“Gone as usual in the morning, and me left behind and naked, inner thighs lightly scaled with the dried spoor of our lovemaking: she liked to stay on top afterward and let the juice run down, and I liked whatever she liked. Imagining in the shower that I could smell her still, the angular scent of those secret bones, had she always smelled so fierce and good? Recalling those gone times, old memories lit by the fire of the new, I did not this time wonder how long it would last; I was too smart for that now. Take what you get, and don't think. Of course it could never be that easy, but there were moments, like now, that I could successfully pretend that it was, and I had no inclination to try to peer past those moments. I'm not one who wants to know the future: at the best it spoils the present, with longing or dismay, and at the worst, well. Who really wants to find out how tight the sling is, for your very own personal ass, who wants to know how deep the shit will really be? Not you. Not me either. Because its rarely ever bliss saved up, is it, when you finally get there. I'll take my now, waking with a lover's scent still on me, around me, take my hopes before they're maybe tragedy; a good morning, even if it leads to apocalypse at night.”

at first i didn’t really care for his voice. a bit verbose, almost anti-seductive. but i think he really loses himself & goes somewhere (conceptually) that another style wouldn’t really reach. so that imagination is the main appeal for me.

I'm a bit new around here, so I'm not sure how familiar you are with Ligotti. I haven't Noctuary, but I was able to get a compilation called Shadow at the Bottom of the World years ago. I liked his stories. If you haven't read him, he is far different than anyone else out there (sorry if you have read him and I'm being redundant). People want to compare him to Lovecraft, but I think the two are wholly different.

Ligotti didn't click for me at first. It took some time for me, a few rereads of his stories, before it stuck with me.

However, this is a real disappointment as it mainly focuses on her travelling, her drug use and what a "tough chick" she is. If everything in Amanda's life is so perfect, then why the mood swings, the obscene thoughts, the urge to harm the people she loves? What are those tapping sounds in the walls? And who's that woman following her? The mystery behind what's happening to Amanda in Come Closer is so frightening that it "ought to carry a warning to...readers."

2/10

Could not finish it. Bland writing. Characters are superficial(as in no depth). The story has been done a lot already. Think of it as a book written for adults in a young adult style and fails.

http://i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a406/thebossinthewall/monstorous%20regiment.jpg

Polly Perks joins the Discworld army to find her brother Paul. "Ozzer" cuts off blonde braids, dons male garb, belches, scratches, and masters macho habits aided by well-placed pair of socks. Legendary and seemingly ageless Sergeant Jackrum accepts her plus a vampire, troll, zombie, religious fanatic, and two close "friends". The best man for the job may be a woman.

6/10

Reread. A typically(for Pratchett) fun read. Not as funny as about half of his other discworld books. Lots of commentary on sexism and gender as well as being sexist itself. So deconstructing it could be interesting or just read it for fun.

Just finished my rereading of Jeff Long's Deeper. Its the sequel to The Descent(novel unrelated to the movie). Deeper was not as good as The Descent, but till a great read. If you haven't read The Descent you must. Long describes the caves/tunnels/underwater seas/etc. amazingly. The creepiness is there. The mystery is there too. Exploration of the deep subterranean, of an unknown humanoid species. This is not the mole people. Its vicious, harsh, wonder.

4/5 stars.

Both were awful. I made it 25 pages into The Stranger and was so annoyed with the writing. Cliche as fuck. Silly in a very bad way. Its a writing level of a 15 yearold with a tiny bit of talent and skill. Midnight Grinding was basically the same. I read a few of the first short stories and they were boring, predictable, etc. More adult, but not by much. I wonder if The Stranger is published because so much young adult fiction is popular and this seems on the level of young adult fiction, but without any skill or talent. So avoid if possible. 1/10 for both.

ORDEAL by William a Johnstone. Trashy read about a large group of campers in the Montana wilderness who have the bad luck to be nearby a large prison break that results in much pain/suffering for them. Meanwhile a group of weekend warriors is also nearby and pretty much solve the crisis. Really badly written with an extremely conservative bent as well as an ultra Liberal son of one of the WWs that is so annoying that you wish the cons would inflict some pain on him. Junk, to be sure, but entertaining junk that will do in a pinch.

Finished the Blackwater series. 6 books in total. Each one is not very long. Its an enjoyable read. Its primarily about the Caskey family and how they change overtime. There's a bit of horror interspersed throughout the series, but as I said its primarily about the Caskey family. They're a wealthy southern family hit hard by a flood in the first book and continues from there. The books are easy and enjoyable enough. I definitely suggest the series. They're collected into a single book, but I bought each individual one. The high quality ones are expensive so I bought them in meh condition books.

Basically there's a place called Area X that behaves strangely and the US government has sectioned off sending in expeditions to explore it and return back with what the find/experience. That is the basis of the series. It is not a thriller or very indepth use of government procedure. It is also not what I typically find in most fantastic/science/horror fiction series. Its probably what people who snub series like that as beneath them and 'literature.' This one I think would appeal to them. The Southern Reach(location, not the triology) is elusive to being defined. I do not want to say more than this because it will ruin a lot of the book to try to explain what happens. Indeed I now need to reread the first book to see if I can understand what is occurring in Area X. The wonder at what is happening is marvelous.

Found THE GIRL NEXT DOOR (Is your copy by Jack Ketchum?) very well written, but very hard to get through. My daughter has reddish hair and the same name as the title character...found it more disturbing knowing it was based on a true crime in the 1960's.
