Shadowland by Peter Straub. Only about 30 pages in, but I'm enjoying it already.

Much better than that fiasco by R.L. Stine.

Can't believe I missed this-that is one of my all time faves definitely Straub's best-you will love it.

Havent read that one yet either. The only ones of his i didnt like were The Woods Are Dark and Resurrection Dreams. My favorites are The Traveling Vampire Show, Island, Savage, Funland, and In The Dark. But there are others of his that are also very good as well like The Beast House Series.

Shadowland by Peter Straub. Only about 30 pages in, but I'm enjoying it already.

Looks great! Let me know what you think - I'm always looking for recs.

What did you think of 20TH Century Ghosts.

Ive heard Shadowland is one of the best horror novel of the 19th century. Also heard its a tough read as Straub likes to put kinda spin you around so to speak.
Let us know how it was please.

I liked 20th Century Ghosts - Some stories are definitely stronger than others, and I think that he creates better vignettes than he does full-out stories, but for the most part, the stories kept my interest.

I loved Heart-Shaped Box and highly recommend to people who are looking for a good, solid ghost story.

Haven't ready Horns yet - Anyone on here read Horns?

...

I'm currently spending my reading time juggling A Dream of Perpetual Motion by Dexter Palmer and All-New Tales, a short story compilation edited by Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio (Ok, but not great - There's been one story that I've truly enjoyed so far and it was one of Gaiman's: "The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains," which was a fantastic folk tale - I think he truly shines with these).

I'm about 2/3 of the way through (Shadowland) and I must say it's quite amazing. The scope of the book, and the issues it touches on are extrodinary. It's mythic, really. Along the way of telling the story of a group of boys who went to a creepy boy's school in the 60s, and then their lives years later, as adults, he touches on the nature and philosophy of magic, archetypes and fairy/folk tales, also taking some side trips into WWI. He also creates compelling, unique characters that you're interested in, and care about.

Some people might find it a bit sprawling, but I love all the places it goes.

Hope it can hold up till the end.

A Special Place by Peter Straub

Wanted to kinda get warmed up with his writing before starting Shadowland so i picked this up. More of a novella than a book or short story I thought it was pretty good n disturbing in its depravity of human nature. More importantly i enjoyed his style of writing and how he likes to jump ahead in timelines. Cant wait to start Shadowland now.

Has anyone ever heard of or read Ramsey Campbell's work? Friend of mine was almost offended that i had never heard of him so now being intrigued I wanted to know any opinoins on his work or what his best stories/books are. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ramsey Campbell is an interesting one... His writing style is sort of drunken stream-of-consciousness, which leads to an odd, confusing, unsettling reading experience at times.

I really liked his short story "The Scar," though I haven't ready a whole lot else because of the above - You sort of have to be in the mood for it, if that makes any sense. My boyfriend can't stand how he writes, so I think that readers may be torn.

Honestly, I recommend picking up Alone with the Horrors: The Great Short Fiction of Ramsey Campbell - It's a good short story collection of his "best" works. You can find it used pretty cheap and then decide if you like it or not. That's what I did.

Here it is on Amazon if you're interested: http://www.amazon.com/Alone-Horrors-Fiction-Campbell-1961-1991/dp/0765307685/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322409082&sr=8-1

Sorry to disappoint you but the movie isnt as good. That's not saying the movie isnt good but the book draws out such emotion and reaction from you that the movie isnt able to do which is strange considering you're actually seeing the events take place instead of just reading it. Its a true statement to the caliber of Ketchum's writing and the intensity of the novel. I'd still say to check out the movie.

After Leisure Fiction, who he originally published with, basically imploded he left them and all his work was pulled from shelves. He now publishes with Deadite who are re-releasing his work as well as his out of print stuff like Tequila's Sunrise and Take The Long Way Home. Deadite isn't in stores though so you have to buy his stuff online. He also publishes limited edition novels with Thunderstorm books on their Maelstrom line every so often.

Didn't think they were similar at all, now Floating Dragon was very similar. It had a character in it nicknamed "The Dragon" who definitely reminded me of Pennywise and he murdered children. There was a house in it that was similar to the house on Neibolt Street in that it was like a funhouse. Just like The Losers, there was a group of people that had to join together to fight the Dragon.

I just finished Joe R. Lansdale's The Nightrunners and I can say that I am a fan. It was splatterpunk goodness at its best. The best part was Brian's dream about The God of the Razor. It definitely had its gory parts but even if you're not a fan of gore, his descriptive writing and the fact that he doesn't waste any time moving the story along makes this worth the time.

It's my first Koontz book as well. It was in the box of books Rayne sent me, so I figured I'd give it a go. Never seen the movie so this will all be new to me. So far I think he does have a good eye for detail and an insight into human motivations.

My first and only Koontz book was Tick Tock which i think was a bad choice. From what i gathered from the afterword, he wrote it with a different style and combined horror with screwball comedy which i didnt feel work. I didnt like the book very much and havent been interested in returning to him but like NE, i got one of his books from Raynes Book Box so maybe after i read that, i'll change my opinion on him.

Finished Gears of War: Coalition's End by Karen Traviss, very epic, indeed. Also finished reading The Walking Dead volume 2: Miles Behind Us, and The Walking Dead volume 3: Safety Behind Bars, both very sick and twisted graphic novels, I enjoy the classic image comics workmanship, along with the B&W artwork. Makes things a lot more intriguing, I suppose.

I first read The Walking Dead volume 1: Days Gone Bye back in August or September, before I ever watched the hit AMC television series with the same name, the series is amazing, got me into the graphic novel series a lot more. :)

Not sure, I haven't read that much by him. GREAT EXPECTATIONS in high school, which I really liked, and a mystery story I found in an anthology devoted to Victorian Detective stories. I'm leaning toward some nonfiction like SKETCHES BY BOZ or AMERICAN NOTES FOR GENERAL CIRCULATION. Yeah you're exactly rright I think Koontz is great to read after you have read something with unusual or poetic language like Poe or Lovecraft that's how I read most of the ones I've read so far. Okay, thanks. Still, at least one mod should have poked in sometime in the past three hours.

My apologies for not being at your beck and call at the drop of a hat. Of the 7 mods listed, there are only 3 who are active on the forum. I work a full time job, and my busiest days are the weekend. When I'm at work, I have to actually WORK. I don't get to sit around and surf the net all day. V lives in India. It would have been the middle of the night there when you posted your new thread, not to mention he has a new baby and family obligations. Zwoti lives in England. I really don't know much about him, so I can't speak up about the amount of time he has to patrol these forums, just waiting for people to create new threads so he can approve them.

Now you're going to say we need a few more mods if that's the case. Damn straight, Skippy! We've had several volunteers. Perhaps you know the secret to getting the admins to listen to the mods so this could happen. If you do, please either tell the admins to get on it, or let us know how we can get them to listen to us.

Thirdly, forgive me my snotty and petulant tone in this post. Checking on HDC is one of the first things I do when I get back from my 12 hour workday on Saturday, and I don't take it all that well when somebody posts that I'm not doing my volunteer job well enough for them.

Exciting and realistic story about the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake, or quakes rather, that literally tore the Earth apart. Recommended, just wish it had a better cover than this, one of the most blah I've ever seen.

One of my favorite movies as a kid (probably still is, I just haven't seen it since its initial release) and one of Clint Walker's best. Book should be even better. Fisher, by the way, is also Will Henry.

My friend is working on prepping a new movie called "Seven-X" It's based on a book that is absolutely terrifying. I freaked out about ten times when reading it and I can't wait to see the movie.

He said you can get some Limited Edition Copies of the book here: SEVEN-X (https://www.createspace.com/3639210)

I guess the author already sold the movie rights and won't release a published version to the public until after the film is cast. Rumors have some top actors up for roles.

There is a facebook (https://www.facebook.com/SEVENX.Volume1)page too.

Good luck finishing the book. Two of my friends freaked out before they could finish. Ha ha.

The last book I read was Brian Keene and Nick Mamatas' The Damned Highway. Hunter Thompson vs. Cthulhu. Totally badass and a perfect companion to Mamatas' very cool Move Underground. Also, Laura Lee Bahr's Haunt. My reactions to this book: http://bizarrocentral.com/2012/02/20/naked-noir-a-review-and-reflection-on-laura-lee-bahrs-haunt-and-bizarro-noir/

Haunted is a novel made up of twenty-three horrifying, hilarious, and stomach-churning stories. They’re told by people who have answered an ad for a writer’s retreat and unwittingly joined a “Survivor”-like scenario where the host withholds heat, power, and food. As the storytellers grow more desperate, their tales become more extreme, and they ruthlessly plot to make themselves the hero of the reality show that will surely be made from their plight. This is one of the most disturbing and outrageous books you’ll ever read, one that could only come from the mind of Chuck Palahniuk.

so far this is a great book, highly recommend.

finally finished this 766 page book, doesnt sound like much but there massive pages.
any way i definatly didnt think the book had to be that long.Great story line about a man made virus that creates vampires out of people which was supposed to make invincible soldiers for the army.
kinda like dawn of the dead except vampires.the last of the human beings trying to survive.
this guy has a great way of making you think you know whats goin to happen then totaly change things.
But man big sections were unnecessarily dragged out with too much info you diddnt need to know.at times i was ready to just put the book down and start something else, but iv got this thing were i always have to finish.saying that though im glad i finished.the up in the air ending wasnt to dissapointing because i new there was a sequal "the 12"
ill give it a 6/10

I read quite a bit of King in my teens but I have since then read tons of other authors, and yes their are authors out there with just as much to offer as King (Blackwood, Barker, Simmons, Machen, etc.), and a few that surpass him in greatness, but in my opinion only a few that really are greater than King (Poe, Lovecraft). King is the author I always fall back to because he introduced me to horror and weird fiction, I suppose he is like comfort food to me. Their are some authors I haven't got around to reading yet (Ligotti, Le Fanu, Hope Hodgson) and who knows maybe they will be one of the few, I will have to see about that.;)

My absolute favorite vampire book!
