Remake of the Todd Browning silent movie and Chaneys last flick. Its pretty stagey and a bit forced but I so love the basic premise of the films. Chaney is amazing and I always have a soft spot for HArry Earles. A personal fave..

Weirdly I have yet to watch the original.

I like this film too! I had recorded it off of TCM a few years ago and it was the talkie remade in 1930.

I was able to record the silent version as well.

In the talkie, Chaney while on the witness stand forgets himself and uses his real voice rather than the falsetto one of Ms. O'Grady. I always wanted to see how that come out in the silent version. But with Chaney, it comes off fine, as expected from the master.

Always been a fan of this story as it was very popular in here when a first paper back Bangla adaptation published here back in 80s. Anyway, Hammer delivered it in a short but pretty entertaining way and I loved it! After all, "SHE-who must be obeyed" played by Ursula Andress...the hottest hottie of all time...the beauty who defines seduction in the most sexiest way! Oh, Ursula...!

"The Pirates Of Blood Island" (1962)
-Christopher Lee

Plot: IMDB
A group of ruthless pirates attack a 17th Century Huguenot settlement on the Isle of Devon in search of treasure and will stop at nothing to obtain it.

Phantom's Review: A very different type of Hammer Film production. No supernatural creatures in this one, just a good old fashioned swashbuckler
Lots of action and fun. Christopher Lee is excellent (as always) as the one eyed pirate captain. (he would have made a great Captain Hook).
My only complaint about this film is, it's a PIRATE movie and there is virtually no ocean or ship scenes. It all takes place on dry land. Apparently due to budget constraints. outside of that , it's a very entertaining film..

Just finished watching "The Ghoul" (1933) with Boris Karloff.

I really didn't get the juxtaposition between the scary parts and the comedic, camp-style humor that dominated much of the film. Some of the comedic turns the film took really hurt it in my opinion.

It just didn't work for me, but I loved the premise and the overall atmospheric manner in which it was filmed.

"The Valley Of Gwangi" (1969)
-James Franciscus

Plot:
At the end of the 19th century, an American Wild West show, traveling in Mexico, discovers a hidden valley filled with prehistoric beasts.

Phantom's Review: The very definition of the term "weird western". James Franciscus (the poor mans Charlton Heston) stars in this variation on the "King Kong" theme. While this film is nowhere as great as "Kong" It still is a highly entertaining mix of western and monster movie genres.
With great special FX from the legendary Ray Harryhausen. Lots of fun to watch.

Those who have seen Barrymore's and March's take on R.L. Stevenson's ever-popular character might be a tad disappointed with Hammer's effort, but director Terence Fisher tries to bring his own touch to the classic tale. The result is a seemingly adult-oriented plot with blackmail, post-marital affair, and self-virtues running alongside the main premise.

Christopher Lee is in his elements as usual, but Paul Massie steals most scenes when he is Mr. Hyde - vile, dark, complicated, brutal...but his Dr Jekyll falls flat. The two women actors do well with whatever space the script gives them. Without a doubt, the film's saving grace is Lee.

Watch this if you have time to spare. Otherwise, give it a skip.

Yah, that was not one of Hammer's shining moments.

I recently watched Dinosaurus! (the ! is part of the title). A mid-60s creature feature that features dinosaurs coming back to life. The stop-motion wasn't by Harryhausen, and it shows. Still, the battle between a T-Rex and a steam shovel was fun, and the comedy relief provided by a re-animated cave man is cheesey, but entertaining.

1)"The Smiling Ghost" (1941)
-Wayne Morris

Plot: IMDB
Elinor Bentley Fairchild's previous three grooms-to-be have either died or been maimed. Her aunt hires Lucky Downing to become engaged to her for a month to break the curse. But Lucky becomes a target of what appears to be the ghost of one of the former fiances.

Phantom's Review: Light hearted mystery suspense film, done in the style of Bob Hope's "Ghost Breakers". Decent little film if you can get past the heavily racist humor provided by the hero's sidekick. It's an okay film, nothing great but I've seen far worse.

2) "Creature From The Black Lagoon"

Reading Rayne's Poe book over the last two days made me want to pop this in again last night.

Such a nice little film. Very enjoyable despite minor flaws in it's story execution. And, one of the rare moments when Price gets outshined by someone in the same frame, this time by Rathbone in the final story segment.

"The Cosmic Monster" (AKA "The Strange World Of Planet X"1958)
-Forrest Tucker
Plot: IMDB
At a small, rural British lab, monomaniac Dr. Laird and his staff create ultra-intense

magnetic fields. Inexplicably, the apparatus seems to be affecting distant objects, and to be drawing "extra power" from...somewhere. One night, after a "freak" storm, strange and deadly things start happening in Bryerly Woods, and a strange man from "a long way off" appears in the district...concerned about Laird's pulling down disaster from the skies.

Phantom's Review: Dull little Sci-Fi film. Too much talk, too little action. The monster FX are just extreme close ups of insects. Not worth the effort

Strait Jacket is such a fantastic film. Ahead of it's time and Joan Crawford gives the best performance of her career IMO.

Fighting severe fever over the past few days and decided to distract myself by popping in Casino Royale (Peter Sellers/David Niven) late last night. Fell asleep at around the 1 hour mark.

Reason I posted is - anyone who has seen the film, did you see the reference to The Cabinet of Dr Caligari in it (the Mata Bond training intro)? The whole film is in itself a parody of other films, not necessarily only Bond films.

Hoping to complete it tonight.

"The Cyclops" (1957)

Plot: IMDB
Susan Winter undertakes an expedition to a remote area of Mexico, hoping to find her fiance, Bruce Barton, whos plane-crashed there some time ago. The area is suspected to have a good supply of uranium, so Susan has promoted this to wealthy Martin Melville to get money for her expenses. In addition to Melville, she is accompanied by guide Russ Bradford and pilot Lee Brand in his small-engine craft. But the plane crashes, stranding the four in an isolated valley, which they soon discover is highly radioactive and inhabited by mutated life forms - giant insects, enormous lizards, and a 25-foot-tall human male with a deformed face, just one eye, and only brute animal instincts to feed and protect its turf...

Phantom's Review: Terrible acting ! Lousy FX! It can mean only one thing ! Another Bert I Gordon Classic! One of Gordon's earliest efforts at the "Giant Monster Genre". While not as "good" as later films like "The Amazing Colossal Man" or "Earth vs The Spider" this is still lots of cheesy fun. Sit back, leave your brain at the door and have fun.

A novel take on the Stevenson legend, this slightly Bizarro version is actually much better than the other Hammer offering I watched a couple weeks ago. Found it quite entertaining, although the ending felt a bit ham-fisted. Look out for Martine Beswick at her best - a hot looker (if you remember her from the early Connery-as-Bond films) and a standout performance.

Overall, very watchable and recommended.

A crazed artist who believes himself to be the reincarnation of a murderous vampire kills young women, then boils their bodies in a vat.

Obscure little Corman flick, made by Jack Hill of Spider Baby fame. Very campy, very low-budget stuff with a confusing and bizarre story, and the execution will make your eyes roll more than once. Watch it if you are a fan of trashy cinema. It will help immensely if you make this a double-bill with Spider Baby. Just a note - don't be surprised out of your wits when the film suddenly stops and a dance ensues for a long while.

"The Magnetic Monster"(1953)

Plot: IMDB

Working for O.S.I., the Office of Scientific Investigation, A-Man agent Jeffrey Stewart and his partner Dan Forbes are sent to a local hardware store where they find a strong magnetic field has magnetized every metal item in the store. Investigating further, they eventually trace the source of the magnetism to an airborn flight carrying scientist Howard Denker, now dying of radiation poisoning, who has carted on board with him a new radioactive element which he has bombarded with alpha particles for 200 hours. The element, dubbed 'serranium' grows geometrically by creating matter out of energy which it absorbs from metallic objects surrounding it. Stewart calculates that if the substance is not destroyed soon that within 24 hours or so it will have grown large enough to throw Earth out of its orbit.

Phantom's Review: Well written, if slightly dull, sci-fi drama. Very little action, mostly talking. It kind of reminds me of "The Andromeda Strain" not bad, just not that exciting.

Plot: IMDB

British Army radiation drills at a remote Scottish base attract a subterranean, radioactive entity of unknown nature that vanishes, leaving two severely radiation-burned soldiers... and a "bottomless" crack in the earth. Others who meet the thing in the night suffer likewise, and with increasing severity; it seems to be able to "absorb" radiation from any source, growing bigger and bigger. What is it?? How do you destroy a thing that "feeds" on energy?

Phantom's Review: Produced by Hammer Films in the late 50's. this is an entertaining little Sci-Fi thriller. Well acted and written (by Jimmy Sangster) The monster is a little reminiscent of "The Blob" but that's okay it doesn't take away from the film. Nothing classic, just a solid well made movie.

As part of our monthly Bad Movie Nights a group of friends and I watched this awesome double feature:

"Frankenstein Conquers The World" (1965)

Plot: IMDB

During WWII, a human heart taken from a certain lab in Europe (Dr. Frankenstein's) is kept in a Japanese lab, when it gets exposed to the radiation of the bombing of Hiroshima. The heart grows in size, mutates and sprouts appendages, and eventually grows into a complete body and escapes. Later, a feral boy with a certain physical deformity (a large head with a flat top) is captured by scientists who refer to the boy as Frankenstein. The creature grows to the height of 20 feet, escapes again, fights police and army, and is practically indestructible. Later, a reptilian monster goes on a rampage. Eventually the Frankenstein creature and the reptile face off in a terrible battle.

Phantom's Review: Only the Japanese would think of turning the Frankenstein monster into a giant and have him fight a fire breathing monster.
Silly, but lots of fun.

"Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster" (1965)
Plot: IMDB

When an atomic war on Mars destroys the planet's women, it's up to Martian Princess Marcuzan and her right-hand man Dr. Nadir to travel to earth and kidnap women for new breeding stock. Landing in Puerto Rico, they shoot down a NASA space capsule manned by an android. With his electronic brain damaged, the android terrorizes the island while the Martians raid beaches and pool parties.

They are invaded by the police, a retired hangman, an escaped prisoner, a band of crooks and several dead bodies, all looking for something, either the crook or the loot hidden somewhere in the house. a humorous mystery follows.(or not).

Phantom's Review: Another attempt to create a "Ghost-Breakers' Style comedy/Mystery. While this film does have a few bright moments, for the most part it fall pretty flat. Cheaply made and broadly acted. There is some fun dialog and good exchanges by the leads, but for the most part the film really misses it's mark. "Chandu The Magician"(1932)
-Edmund Lowe' Bela Lugosi
Plot: IMDB
Megalomaniac and would-be world dominator Roxor has kidnaped Robert Regent, along with his death ray invention, in hopes of using it to degenerate humanity into mindless brutes, leaving himself as Earth's supreme intelligence. Faced with revealing the machine's secrets or allowing his family to die a horrible death at the hands of Roxor, Regent's only hope lies with the intervention of his brother-in-law, the be-turbaned yogi and magician Chandu, who has the power to make men see what is not there 'even unto a gathering of twelve times twelve'.

Phantom's Review:
Wonderfully corny and over the top melodrama. The is a movie serial at it's best. Exotic locals (actually a studio back lot) cool FX (for it;s time) and Bela Lugosi at his sinister best. Lots of fun

Night of The Demon. Saw this when I was a child and the following day at school the conversation centred only on the silly manifestation at the end. Fair enough. But the idea of passing the runes was excellent and well handled. I've great big soft spot for the movie. I'd heard rumours of a remake. Whether it's happened is another story. Also, didn't Richard O'brian mention Night of the Demon in The Rocky Horror Show? 'Dana Andrews said prunes, gave him the runes and passing them used lots of skills...' excellent.

"Berserk" (1967)
-Joan Crawford

Plot: IMDB

Monica Rivers, is the owner and ringmaster of a traveling circus and who'll stop at nothing to draw bigger audiences. When a series of mysterious murders begins to occur and some of her performers die gruesomely, her profits soar. She hires high-wire

walker Frank Hawkins, impressed by the handsome and muscular young man. They begin an affair which arouses her previous lover Durando's jealousy. When Durando is found dead shortly afterward, the other performers begin to take alarm, as a mysterious killer is obviously loose in their midst. Many suspect Monica herself of the killings, especially Matilda, who has set her sights on Monica's new lover. At this point, Monica's unruly, sixteen-year-old daughter Angela, is expelled from school for being incorrigible and Monica is forced to take her into the circus, allowing her to become the partner of knife-thrower Gustavo. Meanwhile, the dead bodies continue to pile up...

Phantom's Review: What a lousy movie! Despite a good cast (Joan Crawford and Micheal Gough) and an interesting concept this film is so boring. Crawford, who around 62 at the time, was trying to act like a sex symbol and It just didn't work. Also, they used a real circus to film at, and whenever any sort of suspense was starting to build it would be interrupted by a animal act and the director filmed the whole act and it brought the film to a screeching halt. By the time you found out who the murderer was, you just didn't care. And the finale is so lame, it looks like it was made up on the spot. A terrible film, don't waste your time on it.

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/MannequininRed.jpg

One of the very earliest Giallo films from Sweden that some critics refers as the film which inspired Italian horror maestro Mario Bava to make his classic Blood and Black Lace (1964); as here's also the story centers around a fashion house and it all comes with colorful lighting & great camera works like any Bava film. But overall this is more of a mystery thriller than a Giallo feature with zero gore & little bit of humor at some parts.

Lew Ayres , Gene Evans Nancy Davis

Plot: Amazon

Dr. Patrick Cory is a scientist who, unable to save the life of millionaire W.H. Donovan after a plane crash, keeps his brain alive through an illegal experiment.

W.H. Donovan is much more than one of the world's richest men. He is a megalomaniac even before Cory keeps his brain alive in the tank. Once freed of the distractions of the flesh, the will to power is all that drives the brain. It is able to communicate with Dr. Cory through telepathy, but that is only the beginning. Soon it begins to take over the scientist who keeps it alive. Possessed by the mind of Donovan, Cory finds himself helpless to fight the plans of the tycoon. Cory remains aware as he follows orders, becoming more and more like Donovan. His wife is helpless, his assistant is helpless, to stop Donovan's Brain!

Phantom's Review: Fun little Sci-Fi film. More of a character study than most science fiction of the 50's. This film emphasizes dialog and drama over BOO! moments. Not great, but entertaining.

Plot: IMDB

On the death of his brother King Edward IV, Richard of Gloucester conspires to get the thrown for himself. The late King had two young sons, his heir, Edward V and the younger Prince Richard, but they are not of age and so names his other brother, Clarence as Lord Protector of the Realm. Gloucester soon kills his younger brother but is haunted by his ghost and what he has done. As he continues to kill those around him, Gloucester is haunted by those he has betrayed hearing voices and slowly descending into madness. He spreads rumors that the late King's two sons are illegitimate and therefore not eligible to ascend to the throne. He assassinates the young princes and is crowned King Richard III. The ghosts from his past have the final say however.

"Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster" (1966)

Plot:
Two friends, a bank robber and a man looking for his lost brother, end up stranded on a pacific island populated by some would be world conquerors and protected by a giant lobster. Unknown to the bad guys, Godzilla is asleep inside of the mountains (how a 400 foot tall fire breathing dinosaur can sneak on to an island, bury himself in a mountain and not be seen by anybody is never explained). The good guys wake Godzilla up to fight the lobster creature and take on the bad guys.

Phantom's Review: One of the most fun of the 1960's Godzilla films. My only complaints about this film is 1) it takes a while for Godzilla to show and 2) whenever Toho studio's put Mothra in a film, they felt they needed to put in a long song and dance number showing the natives worshiping the monster. Outside of those two things, this film is fun with plenty of action (once Godzilla shows) and a decent story. Very enjoyable.

"Curse Of The Faceless Man" (1958)
-Richard Anderson
Plot: IMDB

In the excavation of Pompeii, a stone-encrusted body is found with a bronze medallion bearing a strange Etruscan inscription. Carlo Fiorillo, Italian archaeologist, speculates the robust body may hold some life; medical researcher Paul Mallon scoffs at the idea. But people left alone with the seemingly petrified "faceless man" keep dying of crushed skulls; and Paul's artist fiancee Tina starts having strange visions...

Phantom's Review: Lordy! How I love these 1950"s "B" monster movies. Over the top, melodramatic and cheesy as Hell, but with an undeniable charm. Thirteen Women (1932)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/13women.jpg

Thirteen women are marked for death, the revenge of one woman they denied entrance into their sorority and drove from the school. Armed with the mystic powers of her Asian ancestry, she uses the esoteric power of hypnotism and suggestion to drive her enemies to their deaths, stooping to mundane methods of poison and explosives when those methods fail.

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/MyrnaLoyasUrsulaGeorgi.jpg http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/MyrnaLoyasUrsulaGeorgi2.jpg
Myrna Loy as Ursula Georgi

Though some critics consider this is a staple of Slasher cinema but this is a kinda odd and mysterious film revolving around a woman 'Ursula Georgi' (played by strangely exotic Myrna Loy) described as a "Hindu half breed" who seeks revenge on sorority sisters who snubbed her at a former girls school. Using the guise of attendant to a Swami, she procures the addresses of all twelve women from her former school. She sends them letters, under the name of the Swami, telling them of their impending death and how it will come about. "The power of suggestion" here is so strong and one woman's total belief in the Swami's predictions, which leads to influence the other women, that they begin to die, one by one. She ultimately knocks off the swami and turns her sights on the disbeliever of the group, played by Irene Dunne.

According to different online sources, the film is best remembered for being the only surviving footage of legend Peg Entwistle, The Hollywood Sign Girl. Two days after the premiere of the film she climbed up on the "H" of the Hollywood sign (then reading was "Hollywoodland") and jumped to her death.
The film was everything but a box-office hit. Moreover, Irene Dunne had just made success at another studio at the time of its release, and by cutting some scenes the studio tried to focus more on her character. And thus the film was supposed to have been 73 minutes long, but was cut to 59 minutes.

The Woman Who Came Back (1945)

Ever since the bus accident, nothing has been the same for Lorna Webster. She returns to the New England hometown where her family has lived for centuries. But no happy reunion waits. She is convinced that she has become a witch, the target of a 300-year-old curse, and strange happenings soon persuade the townsfolk that shes right. As desperately as she tries, she cannot shake the evil that seems to follow her everywhere. Caught up in a wave of hysteria, the entire town is driven to extremes.

This is a very fine supernatural horror thriller that somewhat comes with a Val Lewton flavor all over with plenty of eerie & atmospheric set pieces. I don't want to spoil you anything but the problem is the story falls bit of balance between supernatural vs psychological horror aspects which makes some of the earlier scenes questionable at the end. But overall this is a required watch for any classic horror lover.

Phantom's Review: Slightly better than average, low budget horror film. The premise is interesting, the actors do a good job and these zombies move around underwater, which is a bit different than most zombie films. The film does move very slowly and there are no real scares, but I found it to be fun, late night viewing. One bit of info for zombie fans. this film was made about 11 years before George Romeros classic "Night Of The Living Dead" so don't expect to see the marauding, flesh eating ghouls that most people call zombies now. Sequestered in an impregnable laboratory trying to find the aliens' weakness, Penner, his daughter, a no-nonsense army major and a squeamish scientist are attacked from outside by the aliens, who have occupied the bodies of the recently deceased.

Phantom's Review: Wonderfully bad, low budget sci-fi -horror film. The zombies move in the same manner as the classic "Night Of The Living Dead" kind of zombies and the acting is way over the top in it's melodrama. Carradine's appearance is just a glorified cameo and John Agar tries his best with what he's got to work with.

The Walking Dead

Not the series based on the comic- a 1936 horror film starring Karloff as a wrongfully executed man who is brought back to life by a mad scientist. This is an amazing film. The set design and photography are delightfully creative, with a laboratory that is creepy and a camera that is remarkably fluid for a low budget affair.

The real attraction, though, is Karloff, who does a superb job as another sort of Frankenstein monster. A man who has no memory of his life before being revived- or does he? It's a truly modern tale, with a subtext of existential angst. Who are we, really, and what makes a human a human?

Really fine little tale. Roshiq, you would love this! (I bet you've already seen it.)

Ditto. Beautiful story indeed and yeah...I've seen all of those 'Mad Scientist' or Mad Science' films featuring our beloved King of Horror (except Juggernaut I guess:(). LOVE THEM ALL! But thanks for the heads up anyway; cause I need to give it a watch again as I've seen it only once before & that was almost 2 to 3 years ago. I wish I could have a fine box set of these movies. Especially The Man they could not hang, The Man who changed his mind & The Man with Nine Lives are my most favorites. :)

Night Of The Demon (1957)
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g432/Travis_Lake/NIGHTOFTHEDEMON.jpg

I had no idea this inspired Drag Me To Hell. I'm not saying it did but they were very close movies. I really enjoyed this movie. The story was interesting and the demon was great. The way they did it was perfect, the look of it and also that you don't see it that much, they showed it just enough.

The only complaints i have are that the seance scene was really corny and i really didn't like the main character. He was just so annoying. He was such a skeptic i bet the demon could've ripped his arms off and he still would've thought it was a trick.

Either way, i thoroughly enjoyed this and recommend it to anyone who hasnt seen it.

"The Innocents" (1961)
-Deborah Kerr

Plot: IMDB

In Victorian England, the uncle of orphaned niece Flora and nephew Miles hires Miss Giddens as governess to raise the children at his estate with total independence and authority. Soon after her arrival, Miss Giddens comes to believe that the spirits of the former governess Miss Jessel and valet Peter Quint are possessing the children. Miss Giddens decides to help the children to face and exorcise the spirits.

Phantom's Review: Creepy, atmospheric,Gothic and totally paranoid. This is one of the great ghost movies. The film feels like a cross between "The Haunting" and "Wuthering Heights" ....or better yet..a really big budget episode of "Dark Shadows". The acting from the entire cast is superb (especially the two children) and like "The Haunting" (the original, of course, the remake should be burned out of existence) the film relies not on special FX, but excellent acting, music, cinematography and mood. a true classic

Blow-Up (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060176/) (1966)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/BlowUp.jpg

This fascinating film from Michelangelo Antonioni delivers a brilliant study of a character, through portraying a dilemma between the perception and expectation from an event or a moment; that also produce some glimpse of an inside look in a generation set on swinging 60's London. Though in the middle it's seems like a thriller of Hitchcockian flavor but at the end it comes with a totally unexpected & unsettling finale that can blow your mind away like a sound of a ball in a tennis court where a group of mimes are the only players & spectators.

"Dead Of Night" (1945)

Plot: IMDB
Architect Walter Craig, seeking the possibility of some work at a country farmhouse, soon finds himself once again stuck in his recurring nightmare. Dreading the end of the dream that he knows is coming, he must first listen to all the assembled guests' own bizarre tales.

Phantom's review: A true horror classic. This is the way an anthology film should be. a great collection of stories, a little bit of humor, and some genuine chills. Plenty of atmosphere and fine acting all around. "The Haunted Mirror" and "The Dummy" are probably the best of the stories, but their are no real duds here. A fine example of old school British horror.

I didnt know there was a movie version of Oh whistle and Ill come to you, Ive always like that story. There was another movie they made from one of M.R. James stories, Curse of the Demon from his story Casting the Runes. It was quite good, a good performance by Dana Andrews and the guy who played the villian, I dont recall the actors name but he was very good. They could have left out the part with the monster, that part was dumb.

Gojira aka Godzilla (1954)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/Gojira54.jpg

This is not just another monster flick where a prehistoric beast roused from the ocean depths and made a rampage of massive destruction in a city. This masterpiece of cinema brings back the horrors of nuclear war to a country that experienced it first hand. In early August, 1945 the rest of the world witnessed as Japan experienced the most terrifying result that a war can produce, the ultimate act of barbarism that ever demonstrated on such a vast scale; a horror that the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki haunted & carried through generation after generation.
Ishiro Honda & his crew beautifully played their magic tricks and introduced Godzilla to the world cinema. Though it gradually become the most popular giant movie-monster of all time but Honda's first Godzilla was not just a portrayal of a monster of death & destruction, it competently symbolize the "Little Boy" detonated over Hiroshima or the "Fat Man" exploded over Nagasaki near the end of World War II. The echoes of nuclear apocalypse come through Godzilla's roar; the devastation wreaked by Godzilla eerily mirrors that of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and thus as a whole "Godzilla" is not just another entertaining product of celluloid art; it's a bleak metaphor that illustrates a black-and-white nightmare about the threat of nuclear experimentation in the ghastly game of world domination.

I saw it only once before and that was almost 15 years ago when I wasn't mature enough to understand the significance of this film. But after giving it a watch yesterday I like to put it in my list of all time favorites where it now holds a place in the top 10.

-Claude Rains

Plot: IMDB
A scientist turns himself invisible. However, the formula slowly drives him insane, causing him to terrorize the countryside as an invisible killer.

Phantom's Review: One of Universals Great horror films. Claude Rains excellent performance highlights this classic. The story sticks close to the original novel and the FX are still brilliant to watch, even after 78 years. The only complaint I have is that the actor who plays Dr. Kemp is a little wooden in his performance. Other, than that, this film is great and belongs in every classic horror fans collection.

"Son Of Dracula" (1943)
-Lon Chaney jr

Plot: IMDB
Count Alucard finds his way from Budapest to the swamps of the Deep South after meeting Katherine Caldwell, of the moneyed Caldwell clan that runs a plantation called Dark Oaks. She's obsessed with occult matters. Who better to guide her through this supernatural world than Count Alucard, whose name no one bothers to spell backwards? No one, that is, except the wily Dr. Brewster, an old family friend. He'll join Professor Lazlo, a specialist in the occult, in fighting this "Alucard" and the woman he's influenced. Or has Katherine influenced him? Meanwhile, Katherine's fiancé, Frank Stanley, will find his courage and his sanity sorely tested when he accidentally shoots Katherine to death, yet finds that she goes on living.

Phantom's Review: Probably my favorite among the Universal Dracula sequels. Clever script. very atmospheric and stylish. Very much like a film noir.
Chaney Jr does a fine job as the title character and all the supporting players are quite good. One of the greats.

Just watched Psycho again the other day - one of my all time favourites.

I got completely into the story and found it very scary. When i first watched it in my teens, i never found it that scary - being into all the blood and gore films at the time, so old films like Psycho seemed tame in comparrison. But having watched it several times since, and with getting older, not liking the gore films so much, when i revisit an old film like this i realise how frightening it is.

It must have been incredible to have watched this film on its original release. Only knowing it was a Hitchcock film and going along for a look. You get into the story of Marion and her theft - will she get away with it? Is that cop on to her? The terrific tension caused by Bernard Herrmann's score. Then it seems she has changed her mind, after a talk with the young man at the motel. She's going to take the money back. And then... wham!!

It must have scared the hell out of audiences at the time because though you feel things aren't quite right, you would never have seen that coming.

A classic film as frightening now as it was 50 years ago.

Dracula from 1931.

Not as good as Frankenstein, imo. Particularly since the film's lack of scoring is particularly notable (in the early days of sound in film, films were left with little to no music as it felt it would confuse the audience) but I thought that the sequence where Dracula and his brides rise from their coffins the first time, in near silence, was actually pretty eerie.

Oh, both are my very favorites. I wish I could have a week long vacation at the end of this month:D...I want to see all the films from my WILLIAM CASTLE BOX SET and few other left in the VAL LEWTON BOX as well as some Bava & Fulci classics also.

"Cry Of The Werewolf" (1944)

Plot: IMDB
Young woman raised by gypsies is actually daughter of a werewolf. She starts killing those who know about her.

Phantom's Review: Dull, horribly acted attempt at a werewolf film. The lead actor has the acting range of a wet towel. The transformation scenes are done off camera and the "Werewolf" is pretty much just a big dog. Truly lousy.

A fun double feature:

1) "Gorgo" (1961)

Plot: IMDB

A salvage vessle is nearly sunk off the Irish coast by an undersea earthquake. A few nights later, a walking sea monster tangles with the fishing boats and enters the town. The salvage vessel captures Gorgo and takes it to London for display. Gorgo's mother, who is upset and significantly larger follows his trail to London leaving a wake of destruction in her path.

Phantom's Review: Entertaining imitation "Godzilla" Interesting story, decent FX and a cool looking monster. Lots of fun.

2) "Mad Monster Party" (1967)
-Boris Karloff

Plot: IMDB

When Dr Frankenstein decides to retire from the monster-making business, he calls an international roster of monsters to a creepy convention to elect his successor. Everyone is there including Dracula, The Werewolf, The Creature, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and many more. But Frankenstein's title is not all that is at stake. The famous doctor has also discovered the secret of total destruction that must not fall into the wrong hands!

Phantom's Review: a Halloween treat for the whole family. You have horror legend Karloff as the voice of Dr. Frankenstein and some entertaining animation from the Rankin-Bass Company. One of my favorites.

I also just watched Cry of the Werewolf, but unlike our Phantom friend, I enjoyed it very much. A poverty row approach to a werewolf story, complete with a noirish group of cops, and the luminescent Nina Foch as a Gypsy princess. Not a great film, but a different look at the classic werewolf tale, taking a Lewton-like approach to storytelling. Also features character actor Fritz Lieber, father of the great science fiction writer.

Also recently saw Gamma People - a delightfully goofy, tongue in cheek British sci-fi film, another that deals with their peculiar obsession with schoolchildren being mutated and used for nefarious means.

"The Black Room" (1935)
-Boris Karloff

Plot: IMDB
Prophecy has it that younger twin Anton will kill brother Gregor in the castle's Black Room. Anton returns to the castle after a 10 year hiatus. Gregor, a Baron, has many attempts on his life as his subjects detest his tyranny. However, good natured Anton earns the subjects' respect, and the admiration of Col.Hassel, uncle of the beautiful Thea. When Gregor kills young servant Mashka, his subjects storm the castle to remove him. Devious Gregor renounces his title in favour of brother Anton to appease them. He then kills Anton to assume his identity and the Baronship again. He is free to pursue Thea with Col.Hassel's blessing. When Col.Hassel discovers Gregor's impersonation, he also meets death. With Thea's true love, Lt. Lussan, wrongfully convicted of Hassel's murder, it appears nothing can stop evil Gregor from ambushing her into marriage. But what of that prophecy?

Phantom's Review: Twice the Karloff..Twice the joy of seeing a truly great actor work. One of his best films, creepy, atmospheric and wonderfully acted. This is a classic thriller.

"The Land Unknown" (1957)
-Jock Mahoney

Plot: IMDB
On a naval expedition to Antarctica, three men and reporter Maggie Hathaway crash-land in a crater 1000 m below sea level. There, they encounter steamy tropical forest, dinosaurs, carnivorous plants, and human footprints, as Maggie's clothes become more and more abbreviated.

Phantom's Review: Fun, corny sci-fi "B" movie. Former stunt man Jock Mahoney is fine as the heroic lead. Plenty of action and some half way decent dinosaurs. If your expecting a "Jurassic Park" style of FX, then forget about it , but if you enjoy these great little monster movies from the '50's then sit back and have some fun.

"Curse Of The Undead" (1959)
-Micheal Pate, Eric Fleming

Plot: IMDB
western with a twist: mysterious gunslinger-for-hire Drake Robey is really a vampire, and it's up to Preacher Dan to save the town and girlfriend Dolores Carter.

Phantom's Review: A Halloween staple for me. While this is definitely a "B" movie, I absolutely love this film. Very underrated in my opinion. I'm a devoted fan of both westerns and horror and whenever the two genres meet I'm interested, unfortunately most of the time when this happens, it's pretty bad (remember "Billy The Kid Vs Dracula") but this time they got it right. Western vets Eric Fleming and Micheal Pate do good jobs as the town preacher and the black clad mysterious gunslinger. Some spooky music and a lot familiar faces in the supporting cast make this a little gem

The Evil Of Frankenstein

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058073/

A Hammer movie that was distributed by Universal so they had the green light to use the likeness of the original. They should have stuck to their own vision. The monster looked pretty foolish. The only saving grace was the usual atmosphere of the Hammer movies and of course Peter Cushing.

I watced an old Roger Corman flick a couple nights ago, The Day The World Ended. It wasnt bad, it had a fairly good story line and the acting was good, but the mutant monster was a hoot. Some one on here described a monster as looking like a big turd, this one looked like a big turd with too many arms. Funny as hell.

Now that Criterion has released an incredible version of this on DVD and Blu-ray, everyone should go out and grab it. I hadn't seen this in ages, and the last time was off a crappy VHS. Truly one of the best and most startling horror films of the 30s, with some incredible make-up and a truly disturbing message. I guess it depends how you define tame. If you mean there is no stomach churning gore - yes you're right.

But it's still a very scary portrayal of a psychopath who specialises in despatching prostitutes in the most sadistic and violent manor.

"Fantastic Voyage" (1966)
-Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch
Plot: IMDB
Scientist Jan Benes, who knows the secret to keeping soldiers shrunken for an indefinite period, escapes from behind the Iron Curtain with the help of CIA agent Grant. While being transferred, their motorcade is attacked. Benes strikes his head, causing a blood clot to form in his brain. Grant is ordered to accompany a group of scientists as they are miniaturized. The crew has one hour to get in Benes's brain, remove the clot and get out.

The Gorgon has Hammer's usual quality of great cast and good production values.

Just a shame that the mechanical snakes look so awful.
In an interview Barbara Shelley says that she would have loved to play the Gorgon herself (which the studio wouldn't let her do because then everyone would know who the Gorgon is - even though most people pretty much guessed who it was anyway!) and would have been quite happy to have real snakes on her head - which she says would have looked great - then sighs as she refers to the awful mechanical ones!

That would have been fascinating, shame she didn't play the gorgon I'm sure they could have still disguised her somehow. I didn't mind the mechanical snakes-I felt her presence was still creepily striking enough to have the desired effect.
