Bride of the Monster is my favorite Ed Wood film. I think Lugosi is simply brilliant.

Bucket of Blood was Dick Miller's one turn at a starring role. After this he turned down the lead in Little Shop of Horrors because he felt the role was too similar to the one he had just finished. He never played the lead again.

Oh, that garbage can escape sequence was the most hilarious part of the movie for sure...it just stunned me right away:D! But actually it's way better than I expected, there are far more worse films been made after that & I think it was a decent effort overall from its particular production team & the cast. Oh man... those cute little doggie shrews...I'd say...all in all, splendid mixture of some 'brave' ideas.;)

Them! (1954). Lauded as the mother of the "atomic age gone bad" flicks, this one deserves its accolades. What could have been a corny affair, instead this classic takes this movie seriously and it shows. Not that it does not have a sense of humor, with occasional dialog digs that come out of left field. The cast was as solid as they get for horror, with James Whitmore leading the fray. The story was solid and engaging, with its momentum ever building. The direction and camera work were perfect for effect. And the ending, while a tad abrupt, left the viewer with the appropriately discombobulated sense of dissonance of the future. Ashe.

Godzilla vs The Sea Monster (1966)

Fun entry in the Godzilla franchise which has The Big G fighting a giant lobster.

Intresting trivia about this film, it was originally supposed to be the third Toho "King Kong" movie, but at the last minute RKO raised their price for Kong's rights so it was switched to a Godzilla film instead.

"Bedlam" (1946)
-Boris Karloff

Plot: IMDB
Nell Bowen, the spirited protege of rich Lord Mortimer, becomes interested in the conditions of notorious St. Mary's of Bethlehem Asylum (Bedlam). Encouraged by the Quaker Hannay, she tries to bring support to reforming Bedlam, but the cruel Master Sims who runs it has her committed there. The inmates, however, have the last say.

Phantom's Review: While not exactly a "horror" movie, this is still a great thriller. Well acted with great atmosphere. Very entertaining.

-Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi

Plot: IMDB
A ruthless doctor and his young prize student find themselves continually harassed by their murderous supplier of illegal cadavers.

Phantom's Review: Karloff! Lugosi! Val Lewton! Robert Wise! All these together make for a classic thriller. Karloff is perfect as the evil Mr. Gray and while Lugosi's part is small, it's still great to see these two icons together. A highly entertaining movie.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956). Born of the era of paranoia, the roots of McCarthyism are readily evident. While the message is thinly veiled, this classic is still a worthy sci-fi Leviathan. With solid acting, direction, and exceptional camera work, this movie is quite the pleasant way to spend 80 minutes of one's life. More so, the score was timely and becoming of such a classic. Minor plot holes aside, this one deserves its grand repose. Late.

***SPOILER***
A super cheesy movie for sure but again I don't like to call it a 'bad' movie (in compare to plenty of crap movies made so far in 'modern' era). It was like a home made family film where the crew & the cast had a big fun time while making it. And yes...there were some hilarious moments...specially when the Earth Ro-man fight against the young couple, mainly with Roy and later it seems Ro-man was somewhat sexually attracted to that young lady...Alice!:D The shocking part was the murder scene of the little girl by Ro-man...I didn't expect that at all. Nonetheless I think they somewhat justified the funny costume design of Ro-man as in the end it was reveal that the whole thing was nothing but a super imagination/dream of a kid who actually playing with a helmet like that of roman and had enough interest about the cave which might be a possible resting place for a Gorilla.:)

This is one of those films whose chills remain with you long after it is over.

"They call them the haunted shores, these stretches of Devonshire and Cornwall and Ireland which rear up against the westward ocean. Mists gather here, and sea fog, and eerie stories. Son of Frankenstein (1939). This so-called third installment of the Frankenstein trilogy adds its own flair to the series, utilizing to full effect its sublime cast. The stark and shadowy atmosphere, the nefarious intrigues, and the rotten Ygor playing that mysterious flute-like instrument all add to its mysterious essence. Of particular importance were the elaborate set designs, with the camera utilizing interesting camera angles which left visual highlights for the viewer to feast on. The acting was spot on, with the monstrous pair Lugosi and Karloff doing the Devil's work, Rathbone hamming it up to delightful effect, and Atwill and his hilariously animated arm attempting to hold the discommoding situation together. The result is a finality to the trilogy that can hold its head up high in light of its incredible predecessors. Merci beaucoup.

My 31 Nights Of Halloween continue with:

Dead Of Night" (1945)

Plot:
An architect seeking the possibility of work is invited to spend the weekend at a country estate , when he gets there, he realizes he recognizes the house and his fellow guests from a series of nightmares he's been having.
When he tells his story, the other guests also recall bizarre and supernatural stories of their own.

Phantom's Review: Suspenseful low key thriller. Arguably, the best of the British anthology movies. Excellent acting and direction along with some great stories make this a highly recommended film.

First time viewing, and I was very impressed. Boasting of a background score by Ennio Morricone, Barbara Steele is very much in her elements as she performs her dual roles to perfection, and the haunting atmosphere really adds to the mood of the film. The feeling of impending doom is what really makes this movie. Might sound stupid but i think this version feels more real than the (awful) remake. I couldnt imagine how the audience felt after watching this at a drive thru or theater when it was first realeased. I agree with you 100%. The 1953 War Of The Worlds film is my favorite film of all time. I have probably watched it more than any other film in my collection.

Though the 2005 remake has some merit, it cannot stand up against the original in any way.

Look at the fine special effects! They didn't have computers ( or at least like we have today) at that time.

Freaks (1932). This discomfiting classic from Tod Browning cannot be labeled a horror movie proper, but more a drama whose characters are deemed horrible to contemplate. Far from exploitative, Freaks works instead to reveal that these humans, relegated to a sideshow, are just as normal as everyone else. In fact, they might be more community-minded than many "normal" people, as will be revealed by their "code." With science today, human disfigurements, oddities, are much the rarer. This leads to an interesting trick of the mind as it searches to find evidence of cgi for scenes that seem too bizarre to be awarded as genuine. Freaks serves a greater purpose as a documentary of a bygone era, of the circus lives of human aberrations that today's world deems politically incorrect to an exponential degree. Maybe this is fair, but this film divulges that these freaks seem perfectly content in their community, where they feel at home with themselves, and where their special condition can actually be a profitable affair. The story itself was classic simple, but the canvas upon which it plays out is compelling. With the use of actual circus performers for many of the roles, the acting ranges from pretty good to deplorable, which by no means detracts from its overall puissance. In fact, it might just humanize these characters all the more. Again, while not a horror flick proper, at least to this simpleton, the ending is one that cannot but be indelibly burned into the nightmarish recesses of the mind, where the characters that we have come to empathize with suddenly admit to our childish specters of human monstrosity by reverting to a mud-stained enterprise that only the gelatinous soils of Hell could produce.

The Tingler (1959). The Tingler was top-shelf B horror fun, no doubt about it. This wonderful flick reminds us just how much fun horror movies should (and could) be today; movie makers take note. I love how director William Castle would have the movie theaters rigged in order to physically scare its audience. No doubt such a gimmick today would find its way into the endless caverns of litigation. The Tingler's set of characters was perfect. Vincent Price dominates as always in his role of delicate moral ambiguity. The rest of the cast sets the stage for the fun that is to follow, a splendid array of good, evil, and equivocation. The story itself, based on the fascination of fear, moves from scene to scene with ease. Vincent Price's bout with lysergic acid was especially remarkable. The special effects were laughable, but in an adorable fashion. In the end, this cheesy schlock-fest will have achieved its nefarious designs through the sheer puissance of unfiltered entertainment.

Dracula (1931). Dwight Frye's inimitable Remfield initiates this classic in his carriage ride to the depths of Hell, and thus thus begins Dracula, one of the greatest renditions of Bram Stoker's novel. This talkie unfairly shoves Nosferatu aside as Bela Lugosi single-handedly creates a caricature of Dracula that stands unhinged even today. Unlike the vermin-like Nosferatu, Count Dracula carries himself with the compelling air of a foreign aristocrat, even charming at times. But the core of Dracula cannot be sequestered, almost as if the evil within cannot but help to ooze to the surface of this unctuous entity. He is but a nefarious monstrosity of savagery cloaked in aristocratic garb. Only his barely checked temperance keeps his secret, for the moment anyway. Much has been said that Bela carries this whole flick, and while his puissance cannot be denied, his newly created groveler comes close to equaling Bela's performance. Dwight Frye's depiction of Remfield, real-estate agent turned supernatural kowtower, is a chilling a performance of a mooncalf that can nary be replicated. From what evil depths did he pull that laugh might best be left undiscovered. In an industry still finding its purchase, Tod Browning's Dracula stands tall as a dark beacon that helps illuminate the way for horror masterpieces yet to come.

Fiend Without a Face (1958). This 50s B movie sci-fi classic somehow made the grade with Criterion, and at first glance this seems an inexplicable maneuver. The story goofy, the acting fun but not stellar, of what importance could such a little flick find discharge? First and foremost, for the time, the stop-action effects must have been remarkable. But more than that, this is one of the first gore-fests ever produced, at least in its day. Coupled with the terrifying sounds of the monsters, this new imagery could not but terrify any child whose eyes were glued to the set, afterward found to be clogging up their windows with Legos or Lincoln logs. Lastly, Criterion's import can be elicited in the message, this time with man forging blindly forward in imaginative technology without proper consideration of the consequences, a time-honored and important practice of movies since the first director decided to foist his dispatch upon the world. Even without all of the cerebral ruminations, Fiend Without a Face is truly an entertaining piece of work, a classic whose horribly fresh animation might frighten adult and child alike. As such, it is the perfect way to spend a lightening-filled afternoon in the glory of 50 sci-fi fun.

The Blob (1958). This creature classic holds up well and was as enjoyable today as it must must have been terrifying to children of its day. The standouts attributes include a young Steve McQueen and a terrifyingly, shapeless gob of a monster whose terror is born of its gooey lack of form. With many classic horror flicks, as compared to today's plethora of CGI, it is difficult to imagine classic effects that can actually elicit fear. The Blob is likely an exception, at least for today's youngins that might stumble across it. More so, this classic creature might have been at its frightful best when off the screen and thereby engulfing one's imagination. The acting was fair, which is in perfect accord for such a marvelous low-budget classic. Where The Blob stands tall are in its two standout scenes, one of which utilizes the camera effectively to exacerbate the sense of terror that has been infused into this small town. The denouement is short and sweet, satisfying and true to the era. While maybe not a masterpiece by today's standards, instead its originality and execution have rightfully oozed purchase into the realm of true horror classics. Merci.

He unfortunately stumbles onto the secret laboratory of a mad scientist who is experimenting on reversing the aging process and instead is turning the natives into bug eyed zombies

"Phantom Lady" (1944)

Plot: IMDB
Unhappily married Scott Henderson spends the evening on a no-name basis with a hat-wearing woman he picked up in a bar. Returning home, he finds his wife strangled and becomes the prime suspect in her murder. Every effort to establish his alibi fails; oddly no one seems to remember seeing the phantom lady (or her hat). In prison, Scott gives up hope but his faithful secretary, "Kansas," doggedly follows evanescent clues through shadowy nocturnal streets.

Phantom's Review: Well made little Film Noir. Good plot and acting. Suspenseful and atmospheric. Very entertaining.

Wow! I thought they would keep the fiends remain invisible throughout the movie; so I was pleasantly surprised at the last part when those creepy 'Mental Vampires' started to become visible on the screen. The accomplishment was far ahead of its time...the special effects, sound effects, gore & the design or outlook of those creatures were incredible! And that makes now certain that why a remake (http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/36536/fiend-without-a-face-remake-works) is on the way for Hollywood.

The Fall of the House of Usher (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0018770/) (1928)

A pretty bleak, morbid & loose adaptation of Poe's House of Usher classic. The Gothic atmospheric settings worked wonderfully; inside the house...the interiors of the walls, the mirrors, the curtains and the painting...all conveyed like the inner world of Roderick...dank, gloomy and decaying. With such nightmarish great visuals the eerie & sad background scores also contributed brilliantly in this total surreal masterpiece from silent era French cinema. But you can't compare it with Roger Corman's version...cause in a cinematic point of view both are extraordinary achievement but completely different than each other as the way they treated the Usher story in their own terms & fashion.

The Collector (1965). Every so often a film comes along whose originality threatens its placement in a genre proper. The Collector is one such beast. Not really a horror flick, it is more a creepy drama centering on the early years of a mentally unbalanced man.

The story is itself claustrophobic, and how such a simple premise could be magnified into a feature length film defies logic. For the most part this film enjoys a limited set and an even more limited number characters. It is the terrifying story of a forcefully contrived relationship and its repercussions. This awkward situation infuses itself into the meat of the story, allowing for a continual sense of dread even when things appear to be going well onscreen. It almost comes off as an accidental horror flick.

The acting was phenomenal. With only two characters filling the screen for most all of its run time, these two never become tiresome, but instead almost ripen right before our eyes. Terrence Stamp excels as the creep, a man that seems fully transparent but whose character is from such a different planet that we can only sense the dread that is in store for those caught in his net. Samantha Eggar is likewise wonderful, herself trying every trick in her purse to remedy her dismal situation. Toward the film's end her frustration drives her to decisions that really cannot be helped but that will likely perpetuate her desperate plight.

William Wyler's direction was spectacular. The whole production was held just askew enough to leave us perfectly discombobulated without feeling alienated. Awkward camera angles continually pull out the perturbed emotions that drives this story forward. The score was splendid as well. It more than set the mood, but almost applauded the twisted nature of the antagonist and his wiles.

Even the end was a fresh surprise, its denouement leaving plenty of room for fertile imaginations to manifest scenarios even worse than that which was just survived, and all without unnecessary violence or gore.

Leech Woman. The movie was a little all all over the place in that they had tried to cream a to long story into a to short movie but all in all I liked it and I think it is a good film. If I am not mistaken this film was made in 1960.

The plot of Leech Woman is that you have a scientist who completely neglects his beautiful, older wife to find a way to reverse aging. One of his patients claim to be over 150 years old, the scientist and his wife go to Africa and learn that a woman's secret is powder from a particular flower mixed with human spinal fluids.

The acting was good, and a costumes and sets where nice to. All in all I really liked this film.

A masterpiece, even in its truncated form.

I just looked that up...It mentions in Wiki that (14 mins in 3 scenes have now been restored on all home video versions). Cut scenes included a visit to the Hobart family farm, a trip to Stonehenge, and snippets of the seance scenes and conversations between Karswell and his mother.

Its been ages since I've seen that film but I don't remember 'a trip to Stonehenge' was this restored in the version you watched.

But you're 100% correct - the film is a master piece. I really must buy it on DVD. It one of the few times where a film is better than the source material (though I love the James story too).

Not actually a horror movie- it's a light-hearted allegorical fantasy in which The Spirit of Mankind (Ronald Coleman in his last film) and Mr. Scratch argue the fate of humankind in a celestial courtroom.

Vincent Price plays the debonair devil, Mr. Scratch, trying to prove mankind is ultimately evil, and he is in typically fine form. It's a perfect role for him.

Other members of the cast- John Carradine as an Egyptian pharoh, Harpo Marx as Isaac Newton, Peter Lorre as Nero, Groucho Marx as a Pilgrim, Heddy Lamar as Joan of Arc, Agnes Moorhead as Queen Elisabeth and Dennis Hopper as Napoleon.

Mother Joan of the Angels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_Joan_of_the_Angels) (1961)

In a remote convent on the barren plains of 17th-century Poland, a young priest arrives to exorcise the demons from a group of possessed nuns. When he meets the beautiful head of the convent, her blasphemies against the church both repel and excite him, with tragic consequences.

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/MJOA4.jpg http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/MJOA3.jpg

Based on the same historical events that inspired Ken Russell's 1971 film The Devils, but actually the events of MJOA take place immediately after the "wicked" priest (who was later to be the central male character of THE DEVILS, played by Oliver Reed) has been burned at the stake as a sorcerer, and accuses by the 'possessed' nuns. So, when the film starts the possession and exorcism attempts are already well under way. Given the ten-year gap between the two films, the scenes here of rampaging nuns are nowhere near as explicit as in Russell's film...especially since it mainly concentrates on the man's inner torture and crisis of faith (somewhat like Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal fashion) portrayed with high contrast black and white cinematography.

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/MJOA2.jpg http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/MJOA1.jpg

Nevertheless the possession & exorcism scenes in the first half are beautifully done, however, with the first revelation of evil being particularly unsettling and brilliantly handled. Even the first meeting between the two main characters is fascinating; black beard and black robe of priest against possessed Mother Joan's pure white habit & headdress…the classic colors of good and evil are actually reversed here.
Overall in MOTHER JOAN OF THE ANGELS the Polish director Jerzy Kawalerowicz showed a disturbing exploration of faith, oppression, and desire. It’s indeed a spellbinding character drama & a highly accomplished piece of film making in its own right.

I actually thought Tomb Of Ligeia was Roger Corman's weakest Poe adaptation to me it felt too much like a cash in-as though they had very few ideas where to take this film and relied solely on Vincent Price's reputation to get people to watch. The Fall Of The House Of Usher however I felt to be one of the best of them by being superbly macabre and tantalisingly atmospheric.

The first 10 minutes includes a rape and a murder by acetaline torch. Not one of Sangster's greatest scripts but worth a watch.

Spalovac mrtvol aka The Cremator (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063633/) (1969)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/Cremator2.jpg http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/Cremator1.jpg http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g348/sanjidhdc/Cremator3.jpg

Karel Kopfrkingl has the perfect life: a beautiful and faithful wife and two lovely children. His income allows him to surround his family with art and beauty. And more importantly he LOVES his job as a crematorium operator or the title character The Cremator. He finds the idea of burning people every day in the crematorium very much practical as he believes that cremation relieves earthly suffering and sends the soul to Heaven much faster than a standard burial. But as you peel back the layers of this weirdly uncanny character, you will find there is a lot more going on than just Kopfrkingl's desperate attempt to raise his position in life.

Kopfrkingl got the full camera attention every second of the film. The film shares his sadistic thoughts, reveals his gradually developing madness along with his tainted logic through a time to time monologue of his from the beginning to end. This is one of those rare psychological horror features where the audience senses it all the way with a hallucinatory & morbid touch in its every reel.
Though billed as partly a black comedy, this creepy Czech classic is just a bit too uncomfortable and surreal to truly meet that label. Made in the golden decade of Psycho, Repulsion and Carnival of Souls, The Cremator remains unlike any movie you have ever seen before. It's slow, deliberate and genuinely horrifying where the black and white cinematography is haunting but beautiful; musical score is enthralling and aesthetically intriguing.

With barely a Nazi in sight, The Cremator brilliantly captures the political horror of 1930s Europe & the Holocaust as it takes over from within and makes monsters of the most boringly normal of men. And with barely a drop of blood to be found, The Cremator still manages to be brutally real. This is a pure horror and along with the director Juraj Herz, all the credit also goes to the actor (Rudolf Hrusinsky) who magnificently played the lead role...a performance that accurately and metaphorically fills the screen, an upsetting portrayal of a deceiving and psychotic character that steadily become occupied with Nazi political dogma.

Highly recommended.

"Sweeny Todd: Demon Barber Of Fleet Street"(1936) I actually saw this a few weeks ago for the second time and forgot to post about it. This scared me a lot when I saw it the first time as a kid possibly cos this was the early 90s when urban myths about satanism and ouija boards were rife in the UK. Not that this has anything to do with the film but those associations were going through my head at the time. Anyway on second viewing I noticed how sharp the dialogue was and how full of contrasting views it was such are the immortal lines given by the character of Sweeny Todd especially to do with his customers throats lol highly recommended.

On the Subject of Tomb Of Ligeia-I'm surprised that this was faithful to the original "Ligeia" Poe story-its been years since I read it-but I guess I need to read it again I had thought it was more macabre and exciting than the film was-unless I was getting it confused with another Poe story-luckily a friend of mine translated the original latin quotes for me so I'll dig them up as well.

The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes (1935)
Plot: IMDB

Holmes, retired to Sussex, is drawn into a last case when.arch enemy Moriarty arranges with an American gang to kill one John Douglas, a country gentleman with a mysterious past. Holmes' methods baffle Watson and Lestrade, but his results astonish them. In a long flashback, the victim's wife tells the story of the sinister Vermissa Valley.

Phantom's Review: One of the dullest Holmes movies I have ever seen. Not worth the effort

I watched The Sadist a couple nights ago, it was a good one. About a serial killer who holds hostage some people in a gas station. It had Arch Hall Jr. in the lead role. He and his father made a series of movies in the late 50's and early 60's. Most of them were garbage, Like EGAAH! The Teen age Caveman and Wild Guitar and some stupid western where he played Billy the Kid. But in The Sadist they had a winner. It was damn good, Hall even looked the part and his acting was very realistic. He must have taken some acting lessons before he did The Sadist, Because in his other movies he couldnt act his way out of a paper bag. I highly recomend it.

The Villain

Devil Doll (1964)

Not the best, seemed more like an episode of The Twilight Zone or something that belonged in an anthology but i still liked it. A couple of small creepy parts and an interesting ending at least.

The Flesh & the Fiends (1960)

Though I gladly noticed his name on the opening title credits but it took me quite some time to recognize Donald Pleasence in the role of Hare! Where Cushing delivered another outstanding performance but the surprise package was here Donald Pleasence in the mean & cruel character of Hare, IMO. I'm sure that would make Michael Myers proud:D...to see his therapist in a killing spree for 8 Ginnie per body!

Btw, in speaking of boobies (as newb was saying about She-Devils on Wheels) bit surprised (& glad!) to see some boobies in the middle of this very early 60s classic!

The Flesh & the Fiends is defianlly underrated..

Remake of the Todd Browning silent movie and Chaneys last flick. Its pretty stagey and a bit forced but I so love the basic premise of the films. Chaney is amazing and I always have a soft spot for HArry Earles. A personal fave..

Weirdly I have yet to watch the original.

Indeed. Fantastic film and Price is at his most creative act. I daresay it's one of the best performances he has given in his career.

Comedy first, Raven second. Wife loves Comedy of Terrors and I am not complaining!

One of the most amazing aspects of that film is how the stark landscapes really portray a post-apocalyptic world.
