as Halloween quickly approaches again, I've been watching more than my usual share of horror films (both old and new) and since the classics are my personal favorites I've been watching them more than most and I began to wonder what my fellow classic fright fans have been watching of late, so here's my list of the films I'm watching today, what are you watching?

1. Dracula (1931) w/ Lugosi
2. Son Of Dracula w/ lon Chaney jr
3 The Ghost Breakers w/ Bob Hope
4. Frankenstein meets The Wolf Man w/Chaney jr & Lugosi

Peter Lorre: The Master of Menace. What a great actor. I loved him in The Comedy of Terrors with Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, and Basil Rathbone. He was also great in The Man Who Knew Too Much. Oh, and Peter was in The Raven with Vincent, Boris, and a very young Jack Nicholson. All great movies to watch this time of year.

Peter Lorre was incredible. I prefer M to all his other stuff, personally. His facial expressions say every bit as much as Chaney's I think.
As for the last classic I saw, I watched Night of the Living Dead yesterday and the Invisible Man, both with my spellbound three year old brother who then insisted on watching Bride of Frankenstein. I'm thinking of renting the original "The Thing" tomorrow, but I can't remember all that much about it.

Try Frankenstein or House on Haunted Hill (original).

If you really want to know your roots, watch Nosferatu. Enjoyable every time, but requires patience.

Its realised in 1922 by Murnau, its the first adaptation of vampires myth.....and a real cool movie. Try to see it.

To continue what Jacob Singer said

"Nosferatu" is a 1922 German Black and White silent movie starring an actor named Max Schreck. It is the first adaption of the novel "Dracula"(and some say the best) The movie was an unauthorized version of the book and Bram Stokers widow sued the filmaker F.W. Murnau and most of the prints were destroyed in the '20's but a few survived and the film has taken it's place among the early horror classics. I personally think the film is one of the greats, you should check it out. You may also be interested in the 1979 remake and the film "Shadow Of The Vampire"( a "Fictional" look at the making of the original film)

To cut all the shit, it's basically the first of all horror movies. Some will get bitchy and say there was one before it, but this was the history maker.

Know your roots.

Bitching about Melies horror flicks aside [Although his Manoir du Diable IS widely considered the absolute first horror flick], what about The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari? 1919, 3 years before the amazing film that is Nosferatu was made.

"Testament du Dr. Mabuse, Le" (1933)..very good cause this is fucking old...with sound..not soundtrack but sound !

Happy Halloween everyone. It's going to be an all day marathon today:

Halloween
Dracula (1931)
Horror Of Dracula
Frankenstein (1931)
Bride Of Frankenstein
The Wolf Man
The Night Stalker
The Invisible Man
Creature From The Black Lagoon
Beast From 20,000 Fathoms
Night Of The Living Dead (original)
Psycho (original)

and the night ends with what I think is the greatest horror film of all:

The Exorcist

and by the time I'm done both the TV and my eyes are totally burned out

mictlan

In the last few days (also gearing up for Halloween) I watched

Black Sunday
They came from within (OK, I love Barbara Steele)
The Abominable Dr. Phibes
Mad Doctor of Blood Island (still haven't seen the other two films in this trilogy)
Frankenstein (Karloff)
The Black Cat (Karloff/Lugosi)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (there is only one)
Gamera vs Zigra
Tourist Trap
Motel Hell
and a bunch of non-classic recent crap that I like despite myself.

Now I've lost the ability to focus my eyes...

Touching on the debate about the first horror movie, when was Edison's Frankenstein made? Is it even available on DVD/VHS?

I know I'll prolly get flamed for this. But wtf were they thinking? He faintly looks oriental.....faintly...mind you. Also his voice is deep as hell, and deffiently not oriental. Other than that, seemed like an alright movie, after you get over the un-asianess (yeah I know it's not a real word.) the plot is decent. It doesn't have alot to it, but it was an enjoyable watch. A little slow in unravelling, but not too bad that I mentally dropped out of it.

Supposedly, the original track was lost, so the director had to do it himself on very short notice. Is it just me, or did he sound drunk? Perhaps that was just the poor writing...

Carnival of Souls (1962): I like this film, very heavy on the Twilight Zone influence but recommended.

The Ape Man (1943): A strange one but enjoyable enough. Not sure why they felt compelled to have the author of the story as a character?

You're right, I misread the Forum's description. Sorry about that.

In that case... the last one I saw was White Zombie. I enjoyed it because I'd never seen a zombie movie so old. It wasn't scary, but it was interesting to watch and I had the priveledge to see it at a cinema, which was also cool.

Mesa of Lost Women (1952): Dont know why but expected more from a film with Uncle Fester from Addams Family in the lead role as the mad doctor! Still, standard fair invoving beautiful women/tarantula hybrids (of a sort) and a stranded group of passengers from a downed plane. Only watch if you're seriously short of other things to do.

his 1st few albums are instrumental (they're my favorite)

they're natural horror soundtracks ..

he plays a modded electric violin and mandolin .. the sounds are modded and layered .. it's impossible to describe ..

Later he started doing vocals and his songs became more rock-oriented .. but his early instrumental stuff is what grabbed me.

If this guy was american instead of canadian .. he's be mentioned along with Tangerine Dream and Danny Elfman as a top choice for film soundtracks.

If anyone ever makes a proper Lovecraft movie .. this would be the guy to score it.

I actually found Maniac to be extremely overrated, especially after seeing it in a book as one of the 10 most disturbing movies ever made.

It was kind of boring and a little silly, to be honest. Very low-budget feel that didn't fit quite right.

The only scene I liked was the end. Maybe worth a viewing for that.

It does have more in common with the vampire character "Dracula" than just the name. He does live in a castle and claim to be immortal. Mary does repel him with a crucifix and his 12 evil brides when he tries to marry her during a black magic marriage ceremony. Later, he tries again to acquire her through the powers of hypnosis. True, it's not Stokers story "Dracula", but there are enough similarities between the Dr. and a vampire to be considered, IMO, the first adaptation, but not the closest telling of the story "Dracula".

If you would bother checking the description of each forum head, you will be better off. This is a classics movie forum, ergo movies uptil 1969. Thats why you see a lot of threads which include LATER movies, moved to their rightful places. You better realise it before your posts get moved too.

I would suggest "Last movie you watched" thread in the "Modern Horror Movies" forum for your next post. And yes, alkytrio is right...

defining a film as classic to completely subjective, so it's a lot easier to split up the film section by when the movie was made.

Brides of Dracula (1960)

Great film. Have seen it several times in the past, but this was the first time on DVD, as part of the Hammer Horror Series set. The film looked the best I have ever seen it (which in the past has only been full-frame television broadcast). The colours are bold and lurid, something that early Hammer horrors really had in their favour.

The film is quite fast paced, and has a freshness and originality about it that holds one's interest.

*** SPOILERS***

There are a couple of flaws in this film, most notably to me was the overacting by Baroness Meinster's servant. Also, I felt Van Helsing's method of evading the vampire's curse by buring the bite marks from his throat with a hot iron, then bathing the wound in holy water was a bit of a cheat.

END SPOILERS

However, these did not detract in any major way from what is an excellent addition to the vampire movie genre.

9/10

Not horror but sci-fi.

This Island Earth.

Someone reminded me of Day of the Trifids a little while ago, so I borrowed it and watched it again. It amazes me that not a lot of people have seen it, it's one of the better sci fi/horror oldies out there....the special effects are still great, and the trifids are still pretty damn scary, even though I'm not a kid anymore. Makes you have second thoughts about strolling through the park....if you like creepy, you have to see this movie.
