You didn't forget, he was the first one you mentioned on your list?

Wow, even in the giant list, plenty of my favorites haven't been mentioned...

Steven Wright - genius, pseudo-intellectual humor
Emo Phillips - same as Wright, but more story orientated

Steve Martin - manic creative genius. "Let's Get Small", grandmother's song.

Lenny Bruce - early work, stream of consciousness --
John Mulaney - New in Town (on netflix) - basically clean and funny, the golden combo
jerry seinfield - smaart & generally clean
sara silverman -- funny and smart standup, does good sellf-deluded routine

As mentioned by others: danderfield- No respect, Carlin, cosby

I like smart, creative, insightful & sincere standup. The nasty, cruel, supercool, badass routine bores me.

Now his show makes more sense. He made his fake family seem so wholesome to hide the fact that he was a creep. I bet he had an old van and everything.

Added to my list:
-Jim Gaffigan
-Steven Wright
-Patrice O' Neal

I think Tosh is alright but he relies to much on slagging off other people.
And his insults aren't always that creative.

I'm surprised no one else mentioned Doug Stanhope.

Well, as you know, there's more to a standup routine than humor -- odd as it sounds -- there's warmth, love, insightfulness, wisdom, just to name a few.

When I mention cosby here, i'm just talking standup. His routines would be full of family and neighborhood stories we can identify & commiserate with, delivered with warmth & insight. Not always the funniest stuff, but very enjoyable.

I watched his 80's sitcom; it was alright. I liked Cosby's "kids say the darndest things" better.
