Horror & Humanism?

I have spent time trying to word this question. We all love Horror, for different reasons, we have our favorite films, novels, television shows, the list could go on.

However, because, we love Horror so much, where it has inspired some of us.

Does Horror have a measurement, to what is acceptable, not controversial shocking new or different, or painful? Or, do we, like me, accept everything Horror presents us with like "A Serbian Film" and have different understandings of what the Writer, Director, or Actors may have meant for us to understand like noticing the real problems of the world.

It depends. I wrote a review a little while back for Dead Girl(2008). Basically saying its a sexist, misogynistic, piece of shit. Something like that doesn't make us cringe in a way we 'need' to. It just reinforces women as bodies without character, in this case, to be raped repeatedly.
I could completely be wrong here, but the idea is sound. I'm referring to Martyrs(2008), and that I haven't seen it. From the trailer and what I've read the film it looks like it doesn't hide from the reality of sex trafficking. That the women have depth and the horror is how they are treated. Not cringing at some blood and guts, but the probability of it occurring in real life. So if I'm wrong about Martyrs, the idea is still the same in that if something is to make a statement or to make us feel something we try not to/ignore due to its unpleasantness that it has value to me.
That's all about the torture porn genre.

Stopping there, someone else please continue the discussion. Do not want to fill pages with my text. : )

For me personally horror is a vice. Media is not a mirror so I believe you shouldn't take messages or look fer understandings from it. So fer me there is no limit to what acceptable...
As far as inspiration....One name : Howard Phillips Lovecraft

Alotta times when folks try talkin to me about spiritual subjects I tell my heart song:
Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn
(In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming)

I really dont know what you're asking. Can you rephrase, or otherwise simplify your question?

First time I read your post I thought I had an idea of what you meant... but now I'm not so sure. So I guess, what Sculpt said. ^^;

If I understand correctly you want to know what is going too far in horror? What is or should be acceptable and what is or should not be?

Or do we enjoy a movie because it's bloody or well written or has a hidden meaning?

Personally I look for the most believable creature features in a horror, or I just enjoy a good slasher fest.

I don't look for meaning in a movie. If I cared about meaning I'd like Animal Farm, but I came out disturbed and pissed off my favorite character died... But I digress.

I do have my limits for what I watch in horror. I don't care for torture porn. It's just a little too out there for me. Creatures, slashers, and vintage I enjoy for the creativity of the characters and the story. Although slashers are more fun to watch just for the hell of it.

I think there should be limits. I think very disturbing or "wrongly sexual" films can inflame people who are already on the way to abusing someone. I think a country has the right to vote for not wanting a film in it's territory, even if a minority of people in that country want the film.. I'm a not a free for all laid-back person.

abandonware. There is not just hearsay, but proof, that the Columbine shooters loved horror. Do you think horror fueled their killing sprees?

Really? are you talking about horror movies and books? Just wondering, because I've never come across anything that suggested this about these two guys. Any link you could provide? Not being contentious, I'd just love to get some more info about this.
