I don't think the current Godzilla is the best of the 20 some films. I don't many folks on our forum have seen all of them.

I remember watching the old ones endlessly on Sci-Fi back in the 90s when they used to marathon them every Summer. I'm hard-pressed to remember which my favorite was.

Allow me to cut/paste a write-up I just did on the best & worst of the old Showa series: Link:http://horror.com/forum/showpost.php?p=971749&postcount=144. The Showa series has 15; which is half. If you count both the US Brodderick98 Godzilla and Cranston14 Godzilla, that's a total of 30.

Are some of the newer 15 better than these Showa 9?... yes, but I don't think any of the top 10 films rise over the other top films. Many are very different than the others, and exceed in different film aspects. Makes selecting the "best film" a very difficult endeavor.

Off the top of my head, of the newer 15 G-films, I'd say Biollante, Destroyah, Final Wars and Godzilla 14 are also some of the best.

Best Showa Series Godzilla Films: (in rough order, they're different films that excel in different areas)

Destroy All Monsters 1968 -- (Excellent Sci-fi film, beautiful sets, effects, interesting story, good pacing, story sci-fi driven & not especially character driven, for adults and kids)
Mothra vs. Godzilla (Godzilla Vs the Thing) 1964 -- (interesting story, good pacing, has a lot of heart, for adults and kids)
Godzilla vs. Hedora (smog monster) 1971 -- (psychedelic film, fascinating/unusual/beautiful art and visuals, jazz/psychedelic/classical music finely integrated with speaking/visuals, interesting story, good pacing, sometimes scary, almost more for adults, but ok for kids over 9 maybe)
Godzilla vs. MonsterZero 1965 -- (Staring American actor Nick Adams, very cool sci-fi film, interesting story, good pacing, for adults and kids)
Godzilla, King of the Monsters (US) 1956 -- (Staring US actor Raymond Burr, interesting story, good pacing, Burr does great job, fascinating visuals, special effects and music; not as gloomy and slow as Gojira, but loses it's visceral & heavy duty effect of suffering with victims, for adults and kids)
Godzilla/Gijora (Nippon) 1954 -- (interesting & layered story, excellent and creative visuals, effects and music; film is heavy, gloomy & visceral, can be chilling, sometimes slow pacing, have you're own energy to watch it, not for kids. Some purest will say this is the best film. In my experience a majority with that opinion tend to be those who haven't seen or don't care for any other G-film.
Ghidora the Three Headedmonster 1964 -- (amazing special effects and music, pretty good sci-fi, pacing is weak/long in spots, for adults and kids)
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (Cosmic Monster) 1974 -- (interesting & bizarre sci-fi, good visuals; mediocre pacing, dialogue & acting, tipping towards kids but still dark, ok for sci-fi cultural curious adults)
KingKong vs. Godzilla 1962 (US version 1963) -- (fun film, pretty good pacing, more for kids, ok for adults; US version has added parts, pretty much the same except for the winner)

I gotta agree that Destroy All Monsters is one of the best but I have a soft spot for VS King Kong too with it's prowrestling antics.

I haven't seen a single film after Biollante though - I must catch up..

I probably haven't seen the older Godzilla films since the mid-90s at least, back when Sci-Fi had their Summer marathons.

I'd recommend jumping right in with Godzilla Vs Destroyah -- It's designed to be a direct sequel to the original 1954 film. It hits deep viscerally somehow.

It's been so many years since I last saw them that I can't fairly say based on a hazy memory. I definitely went through a Godzilla phase when I was small largely thanks to Sci-Fi's Summer marathons of them back in the 90s.

Hmm... I'd say Godzilla 2014 is the best of the American Godzilla movies (with only 2 to choose from).

On other movies, I'd make Alien still the best of the Alien series (though Aliens contends with it), Predator 1 the best of where the predators appear, and Transformers 1 for all of this series. Usually, for me, the original would be the best. Some sequels seem forced.

In Hammer Films' series... make it The Vampire Lovers for me. hehe

I remembered Lucio Fulci's Zombie spawned quite a few rip-off sequels in Italy, IIRC. I've never seen any of them but they all seem to be of a pretty low quality and their numbering is also confusing since Zombie in Italy was marketed as a sequel to Dawn Of The Dead when it was never intended to be as such and thus Zombie 2 is known as Zombie 3.

None of them were as good as Fulci's Zombie/Zombie 2/Zombie Flesh Eaters. Zombie 3 was ok but suffered as Fulci wasn't involved much could of been much better but still ok to watch. Zombie 4:After Life was terrible but Zombie 5: Killing Birds was really fun I enjoyed it a lot. I'd definitely say Killing Birds is the one I would recommend most.

I remembered My Super Psycho 16. Never seen any of them but I've heard good things about them.

I enjoyed all three I think I enjoyed the 2nd most but I watched them close together and the lines blur a bit for me. I'd go with the 2nd maybe then the 1st as my faves. I'll re watch them at some point.

Excluding the remake and it's seuel there were 7. The first is my fave. I've seen up to part 6 (or 666:Isaac's return) but never part 7: Revelation. I'd like to see that someday so maybe I'll revisit these as besides the first film I've only watched the others once but the quality did dive after the third as far as I remember. But I think they are worth another chance.

Another TV series I remembered was Beyond Belief: Fact Or Fiction? Not 100% Horror but it did have a lot of Horror-oriented episodes that were quite creepy, all the moreso with the ones revealed to be true stories. My favorite was The Kid In The Closet. Scared me so bad and for weeks I didn't want to be anywhere near any closet.

It's strange he decided to make AVP PG-13 given that he's made some pretty violent and gruesome films before. Still can't wrap my head over that film being PG-13.

Funny you should say that. Event Horizon kind of pissed me off because, to me, it was a few older movie plots sewed together. While I was watching, I was just naming the films, or TV episodes, that they were grabbing. And it came off very hodge podge to me.

You know, if I hadn't seen all these other films/TV that Event was borrowing from, I think I would have enjoyed it more. If these were new ideas to me, I would have been more satisfied.

I don't mind past ideas sewed together if the result is excellent. I didn't think Event was excellent.

I thought it had a big budget, looked really good, good sets, special effects, famous actors, interesting premise. That's about it. The bad was plot resolution and logic, character development, script, not a lot for the actors to work with. I didn't really care about the characters, and I eventually cared about as much for the discovery and resolution of the plot as much as the film did... which was none. This event horizon being the entry to Hell isn't really the resolution... I mean it's the "discovery", but what does it mean to the characters?... the thus the director, writer and audience?

I think a seemingly ambitious sci-fi like this should have a point. I thought it was only film work for profit. Can't a film just be about fun and mildly entertaining? Sure it can, and I can really enjoy those films. Event was mildly entertaining, if it wasn't also so disappointing, failing at it's implied goal.

On the subject of Horror TV shows, I recently bought the complete Tales From The Darkside series on DVD and will be going through them all soon. The show is of up and down quality but does have many genuinely great episodes and has a low-budget charm to it.

It should be interesting seeing which episodes hold up the best, but I know for sure Halloween Candy will always be my favorite. Directed by Tom Savini who also directed the (IMO very underrated) Night Of The Living Dead remake.

I'm a big fan of the Subspecies franchise, and the Full Moon franchise generally. Radu---the head vampire---is one of film's best. They decline in quality over the sequels, as you'd expect, but not by much. They are actually all on one DVD now for cheap on Amazon.

I wish they could do a Hostel pt4, but in a European setting like the first two -or- Planet Terror pt2, but I doubt they could ever top pt1 ... excellent movie with an all star cast, some great gore scenes, and cool music.

Please don't make Rubber pt2 - I couldn't barely get through the first one!
Have we gone so far that the villain in a horror movie can be an old tire(?)

I thought Rubber was hilarious

Its kinda hard to describe because of the meta plot going on but besides that plot theres a sentient tire killing people

With Puppet Master, I've seen up to the first seven movies. I love 1-4, 5 isn't bad but 6 and 7 are terrible. I never saw past that, and from the sound of it the series got worse with the subsequent films.

I remembered The Blob films. I've seen the 1958 original and the 1988 remake, and yet to see the sequel to the 1958 version (Son Of Blob, I think?). The remake is easily superior in every way and is among my favorite Horror films ever.

The remake for me is surpassed only by John Carpenter's The Thing as the best remake ever. It's a shame it never got a sequel, given the ending. I guess the poor box office performance destroyed any chance of that.

There is a 3rd filmed in Vegas - very gory, but lacking the Euro vibe. That's why I mentioned a pt4.

I really liked pt1 - girls, weed, and gore ... what more could one want?

Friday The 13th - original, but 2 is very close runner up

Halloween - same as FT13

A Nightmare On Elm Street - original for sure

Saw - original

Scream - never cared much for this series but they were all pretty equal in my book

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - original, one of the best of the best.

Alien - original and 2nd

Predator - original

Phantasm - original

Evil Dead - pretty close between 1&2 but probably 2 by a hair

Hellraiser - 2

Child's Play - original, but Bride was at least really funny lol

Final Destination - first one was the only I could stand

horcrux2007
09-24-2014, 06:57 PM
Imma re-rate mine... but excluding the original

FT13: Part 7 - at least they were trying something new with the telekinesis

ANOES: Part 3 - I liked the return of Nancy, and the kills were pretty cool

Alien: Aliens - fun, action-packed, and quite emotional at parts

Saw: Saw II - while not as intriguing as the original, it's still a fun and bloody little movie

The Evil Dead: Evil Dead reboot - insanely gory and fun to watch

Hellraiser: Hellbound - very convoluted; i didn't like it but it was the only bearable Hellraiser sequel that I've seen

Child's Play: Bride of Chucky - at least it was somewhat funny?

Final Destination: Final Destination 2 - better plot, writing, and death scenes than the first one

Scream: Scream 2 - not as good as the original but still pretty slick

Halloween: H20 - the return of Laurie was nice and it was pretty fun to watch

I think I covered most of the big ones.

I'm still attempting to watch several of the horror franchises (Elm Street being one), but I'll share my favorites of the ones I have seen all of. Will add more when I watch more or think of more to add.
* = new

Halloween
- ...Can I just tie 1 through 5 (excluding 3 of course). I also really really enjoy Resurrection.

Friday the 13th
- I through III (can't really pick just one of these). Really enjoyed Jason Takes Manhattan too.

Hellraiser
- First one, easy! ...or is it. I really like 2 and 3 too... And Hellworld.

Child's Play
- Bride of Chucky. My sister's more into the Chucky films and the reason I watched any of them. 'Bride of Chucky' I enjoyed most cause of Tiffany.

Howling
- First and Original Nightmare. Cause I + IV = book

Tremors
- First. Second wasn't too bad. Third I can't even take seriously...

Scream*
- First. Although I enjoyed all of them, as Sidney herself said in the 4th movie, "Don't fuck with the original." And I just LOVED the cast in the first.

Roiffalo

I simply have seen them or I haven't seen all of them to fairly judge a favorite. I'm slowly making my way down the list though. I'll confess I've been a monster junkie for a long time, but have only recently started branching out in the slasher and select few other types of horror. So many of the franchises listed in the first post are new to me, if not by a few years.

Jigsaw Killer

Depending on your tastes in the genre you'll be in for a neat surprise when you see some of these films and their sequels for the first time.

Roiffalo
05-17-2015, 11:22 PM
Yeah especially after my own taste has changed. I was never interested in Aliens, but I feel now I could sit through the movies. I did for a Predator after all and enjoyed it.

I intend at some point to watch:
- A Nightmare On Elm Street (I've seen 3 or so, need to see the rest)
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
- Alien
- Predator
- Final Destination (recently acquired one of them on DVD)

These were taken from the list on the first post. I'm not sure about "Phantasm"... Don't know what it's about. And I'm not interested in zombies so no "Evil Dead", and I have no interest in the "Saw" films.

Jigsaw Killer

Halloween
My pick? The first one I suppose. Mayyybe the second. I did enjoy pretty much all of them, but in different ways. (Except 3, never saw it.)

Friday the 13th
This is a very difficult question. It comes down to 2, 3, and 4. But I pick 3. After 4 they changed a lot I think. Not to say they were bad, I just enjoy the first few more.

Nightmare on Elm Street
Tough call between the first three. I'm gonna go with 2 because of the mood I'm in.

TheBossInTheWall
05-26-2015, 06:54 PM
Halloween, first one. The rest I could really care less. Its been a long time since I've seen the 2nd one, so maybe that one would still be good?

Elm Street, just the first one. I didn't like the others.

The 13th...never liked them. I'm not really much of a slasher person anyway. HOWEVER it has been two decades at least since i've seen the original. I suppose I could rewatch the first one.

Unnameable, I and II are both about equal.

Re-animater. Not sure. Maybe the second. Is that the one with the re-animated people needing to stay freezing?

Hellraiser. Hard for me to choose. 1st, 2nd, or 7(Deader). The first has an almost 'realness' too it. Probably because it was a simpler film. The 2nd was a lot of fun. The Doctor cenobite was awesome. Deader was also simpler, but the new locale and from what I remember the acting/story were really well done. To introduce someone to the series I'd show them the first one. For a bunch of people to watch together the 2nd, for watching by yourself or with one other person the 7th.

Poltergeist the first one. Lots of reasons.

Puppetmaster. I wish I could say which one, but I really haven't watched these since I was a kid. A rewatching will be done eventually.

Evil Dead. The first one. Shrug, just liked it more.

The Descent. First one, duh.

Gremlins, the first one.

Critters. I can't remember. Been so long.

I think i'll stop there before I end up posting a very long list.

Oh and Basket Case 1 definitely. An actor in Time's Square walking over a real homeless person, past real hookers and strip club/porn movie houses. Alas, never to be done again.

Friday the 13th- The Final Chapter ( loved the role of Tommy played by Corey Feldman, reminds me of myself at that age)

Halloween- Halloween 4: The return of Michael Myers (first Halloween I ever saw....on HBO late at night...was a very long night.)

A Nightmare on Elm Street- Dream Warriors! ( My all time favorite movie EVER! Named both of my children based off characters in this film)

Saw- original (never saw that ending coming)

Scream- original ( just cant top the perfection of the first)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre- Remake 2003

Alien- Aliens

Phantasm- I've only seen the original

Evil Dead- Evil Dead

Child's Play- Part 2 (the showdown at the toy factory was awesome)

Final Destination- 2 ? (this is a big toss up for me....I watch 1-3 all the time and 5 occasionally, never watch 4 cause its so lame)

Segment in Anthology-Trick r'Treat- School Bus Massacre ( There's an awesome haunted house close to where I live that recreates the bus scene from the movie)

I Know What You Did Last Summer- original

Paranormal Activity- part 3! ( most interesting story line, and I tend to get the least motions sickness from this one)

Jaws- part 2 ( I watched this so many times I feel like I was one of the kids on those sail boats)

Poltergeist- part 2 ( I cant remember a time I felt more creeped out then when Kane was singing and then came to door and was yelling in the house)

Re-Animator-original

Tremors- only ever the first one, and it was great!)

Children of the Corn- original ( sadly I have seen them all)

Amityville Horror- part 2 The Possession ( it was always the most shocking to me)

Hannibal Lecter- Red Dragon

I think it is, but the incest scenes in the movie are what I remember the most. I was so shocked when the brother and sister started hooking up.

It's been fun going back and seeing the responses to this question. Some answers were huge surprises for me. So, I'll have a go.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 1974- The original has been my absolute favorite movie for decades. So far, no other title has challenged that.

Friday the 13th - Pt two. It's Jason instead of mom, the potato sack mask/demented farmer Jason design is tops in the series if you ask me, and the kills are a hoot!!

Nightmare On Elm Street- The first. I love Dream Warriors and New Nightmare, but the first is a fever dream and is the scariest in the franchise.

Scream- The fourth. Yeah, I'm sure there's plenty to criticize about this entry, but it felt fresh, had some solid talent onscreen and the pace was outstanding.

Basket Case- I love the first one but I'm taking part two. Wicked monster designs, a house full of freaks, Granny Ruth, and Jason Evers from The Brain That Wouldn't Die? No question in my mind, the second effort is the most entertaining.

Halloween- The first one. Carpenter at the top of his game.

Evil Dead- Very tough to choose against part 2, but I will take the original Raimi film. Once things get rolling, it's borderline chaos and I like chaos!

Phantasm- I'll choose the first. I do think the four Phantasm films make up an incredible franchise, but the first set all that wonderful groundwork for madness that followed. It remains one of the most intriguing and utterly baffling movies I've ever seen.

Yeah, just my opinion of course. I am a HUGE fan of the first Basket Case but part two takes the campy fun of the original and turns up the volume to eleven. As for the third film in the series, it's more or less a misfire, imo.
Let us know how the rewatch of pt 2 goes!

As far as I know, there are three in the series. Most fans debate which is better between the first two, but I've never heard ANYONE say they liked part three. I feel like the third movie starts out promising enough, but derails pretty quickly.

I've only seen the first three Halloweens. The first was amazing, I can't remember much about the second, and I remember the third decently. The third one is very different from the others as most of us know, but I think it was a great film. Creepy fun for a younger audience.

Spoiler for Halloween III:

I remember fondly the halloween mask a kid puts on to watch a commercial for that mask. His head becomes a monster pumpkin head, eventually his head thunking on the floor and him being dead. So rad.

Halloween III is really good but I treat it as a stand-alone film which IMO is how it should've been released. It could've been the beginning of a Halloween-themed anthology series which was actually the plan by John Carpenter before it's lackluster box office performance.

I'm surprised at all the love for H3. I remember being very bored and annoyed with the characters. For a stand alone it wouldn't have been too bad, but I find it bothersome it associates itself with the Micheal Myers story.

HOW ABOUT IT. I wouldn't care if they put in it all the worst sequels and the remake (which I surprised they didn't announce a collectors back with it's release as remakes always draw attention to the roots before their release). I just need them all in one epic pack with hours of bonus material.

Friday The 13th - Probably the first one. Also enjoyed JGTH for it's differences.

Halloween - Can't comment. Haven't seen any but #1 and one from a few years back...will update when possible...

A Nightmare On Elm Street #3 Seems to come to mind more than any other. Though the first one is pretty close.

Saw Only really liked 1 & 2. Things seemed to get rather convoluted after that point for me. I will say though, that #4 (That's the one that showed his "first kill" right?) was pretty decent too.

Scream Probably the second one. 3 and 4 had the weakest killers with the least reasonable motivations.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Another one I'm not sure which ones I have seen and not. The first stands as pretty classic to me. Some "new generation" one was terrible. I seem to recall seeing one of the earlier ones where two of the brothers attacked a radio station? That seemed a bit stupid.
Not really counting the new ones, having seen the latest - that sucked. I think I *may* have seen the one that told Leatherfaces origin prior to that, it was "not bad" but yeah I've found the great majority of tcm movies a bit weak.

Alien The first one. I mean the second may have been the best "action" film in that series, but the best film IMO is the first.

Predator Probably Predator 2.

Phantasm 1 & 3. Can't really remember much of the others.

Evil Dead The second one seems to get a lot of love, but the first always has been and always will be my favourite.

Hellraiser I liked the first one. Second and third were "ok" and the one about the origins of the toymaker was interesting but basically...yeah...not a series that's improved with age. Never saw the last two.

Child's Play - I really liked the second one, though in hindsight that may just be the most stupid entry in the original 3. I don't really count bride/seed, or whatever that last one was with the weird looking doll.

Interesting to see someone add Batman to the lineup. I wouldn't go with the reboot series myself but that's me. Personally I think Batman (1989) was the best, especially as far as a horror theme goes. Returns was even darker. I wish they had kept the theme going (even though I love Batman Forever). Dark Batman is best Batman. Pointless to dress like a bat if you can't invoke a fearful image in your foes, and the last three made never had that for me.

Friday The 13th - The original.

Halloween - The first movie.

A Nightmare On Elm Street - The first was the best, but Dream Warriors was a close second.

Evil Dead - Evil Dead II is the best. Hands down.

What about the other series, seen them?

I've seen them, but most of them sometime ago. Really just got back into horror a few months ago, and need to brush up after being out the genre for about four years or so. When I have more free time, I plan on binge watching the other series, and when I formed a more recent opinion, I will let you know it.

Having seen the Nightmares anthology for the first time in many years, The Bishop Of Battle is still the best segment as I remembered.

I may have mentioned them before, the Hatchet films come to mind. Seen the first two and thought 2 was much better than the first, not seen the third, yet.

Same here. Tho I think Hatchet 1 is a great horror flick.

It's been a long time since I last watched either but I remember being unimpressed with the original.

Remembered The Fly. There's the 1958 original and it's two sequels plus Cronenberg's remake and it's sequel. This will raise some eyebrows but I honestly enjoy The Fly II the most.

The new Purge out this Summer reminds me that's another that'll become a trilogy this year. I thought the first was so-so and the sequel was much better, so it should be interesting to see how this one turns out.

I have a soft spot for the Saw movies.
I think the 6th film is very underrated. It's my favourite one next to the first and third ones.

Carrie is a good one for this. Believe it or not just recently I saw the original as well as the 2013 remake. Loved the original and the remake while not as good is surprisingly not too bad. Not seen the original's much-maligned sequel or the 2002 cable remake but I aim to seek them out.

A new Amityville film is out next month. I'm way behind on that series. Going by the trailer for the upcoming film it looks kinda okay but I don't see it being considered the best of it's series by very many.

Actually it's moved back to next January ::mad::

Found out just now about it being pushed back. Probably for the best to make it much better if the movie is really as bad as some of the test screenings made it out to be.
