T.O., no question.
Who complains because their team doesn't throw them a celebration for 100 TD catches?
I don't ask my roommates to buy me a beer when I ace a test... although I've never done that.
What? whu.... oh yeah, to hell with T.O.

Now I started reading this thread in good faith only to (belatedly) realize you were of course talking about the NFL. Any game where you primarily use your hands isn't football, whereas my football (soccer if you insist) is the true bastion of sport. By the way, how are the Dolphins doing these days? :)

I like TO and I think he had a right to complain. The Eagles organization has never not made a big deal about a milestone for anybody else, so I can see why he would feel pretty shitty that they didn't even mention his 100th TD. Also, the Eagles fought like hell to get their hands on him and now that they have him, they're gonna be surprised that he's a bit of a primadonna? What the fuck? He's one of the best WR's in the NFL. Of course he has an ego...
Hell, send him over to the Vikings. We seem to be short one marquee receiver this season.
And while we're at it... Anyone know where we can find a coach that has an IQ higher than his shoe size? Because Mike Tice is a fuckin' dumbass.

Nothing to rip, if they were in first place just because of how bad a division they were in that'd be one thing but I think they just have a pretty good team this year. The defense is good and Orton is getting better every week(still don't understand why he dropped so much in the draft).

Hey - why not try Bolton Wanderers... or Wigan Athletic? Both good teams!

Hey, got nothing but respect for Bears after losing Grossman and starting a rookie in Orton! I too was suprised Orton went where he did in the draft but just shows that the draft is over rated! I'm a Lions fan and am rooting for the Bears because we have all the pieces in place on paper and can't barely win and the Bears looked like a mess on paper and are pulling it together. Got to give Lovie Smith some respect for dealing with the problems. What's with your 2 guys beating each other up though? that was crazy!

What do you mean? Losing Grossman and having a reason to get Orton in there was the best thing that's happened to 'em. Grossman can be a good QB with a supporting staff while Orton who make no mistake about it has proven absolutely nothing up to this point does have the ability and potential to go threw the growing pains/losing/shift in direction of a team and come out of it all as the first QB the Bears have had since McMahon.

I think it should be against the law to "support" a football team that is not nearest to the place of your actual birth.
In fact, let's go far enough to make all teams consist of players born within that town or city.
Wonder what Rupert Murdoch would think of that?

FutBol, meaning foot + ball.
It IS a football thread...the "football" you refer to, and anything like "rugby", kind of stole the name, from a sport that has been around way longer, and is frankly more aptly suited to the name.
As for my contribution on the sport...
*I can't play it.
*I prefer to watch it to anything ELSE calling itself football.
*Recently saw what I guess was a pretty eciting conclusion to a game that got the Australian team into the world cup for the first time in 32 years, knocking out ?Ureoguay? for the first time ages too. GREAT penalty kickoff at the end.

Congrats, I'm not trying to jinks it or anything but unless something goes horribly wrong you got the division. Win a division title and go into the playoffs with a win over the Super Bowl favorites under your belt, that's a huge step for a second year coach with rookie QB and a franchise draft pick injured most of the season. Lovie Smith looks like the real deal, might take you guys back to the ''Monsters of the Midway'' days.

didn't see the Bears game but read the recap afterward. Why am I not suprised? Meanwhile, my Lions keep reminding me why I rooted for the Bears most of the 80's!! ha ha... Can't say enough for Lovie and the Bears to jump on that division and go to town. I think they showed today they are the real deal and could easily put together a great record of wins over the next few games.

The Vikings beat the Packers twice this year! Woohoo!
See? All we needed was for our star player (Culpepper) to go down for the season and now we're on the right path. (3-0 since Culpepper went out.)
So the Vikes are 5-5 and despite being 2 games back on the Bears, have a decent shot at making the playoffs. Damn that'd be funny if they made it after the start we got off to. The Bears have a tougher schedule than us plus they only have 2 home games left, but what could be our saving grace is that we still play them once more this year and it's the last game of the season. That game could very well be for the division title to see which NFC North lackluster club will proceed to the playoffs where they will get whooped one of the teams that actually has talent this year.
I've never been a huge fan, but after seeing that Colts Bengals game, I have to say that I think Indy is gonna go 16-0 and win the SuperBowl this year. Their biggest challenge is next Monday, but if they get by Pittsburgh, I think they're going undefeated.

Agreed, the Bears Defense is too good and physical.
Bears' biggest win of the season was Sunday against the Super Bowl favorites who they shut down with good, physical defense.
Viks biggest win was against the Giants because of poor play by the Giants rather than exceptional play by the Vikings.
You put very good, physical defense and a all-pro reciever, steady ball control offense.
up against
Bend but don't break, big play defense and fast finese skill players, QB managment offense.
and the Bears' type will USUALLY do better.
I'm not just saying that because I hate the Vikings because as you both know I'm a Packer fan so I hate you both equally.

Star player?
Don't tell me you still have faith in that guy? Brad Johnson walked in and took over the exact same team Culpepper left behind and goes 3-0.
Now I'll give him the benifit of the doubt, maybe he's just gotta get used to not having Moss drawing a triple team, leaving a reciever open and still being able to get the jump ball himself, that's alot to lose and Moss has been their the entire time Daunte has so it's understandable.
With Johnson being a veteran who's been with the team before and most importantly has a Super Bowl under his belt doing the same thing(game managing) I see why he could step in and do better but if we see the same time next year Culpepper just aint got it.

Plus the Vikings have a total of 13 offensive touchdowns the entire year, 4 under Brad Johnson. They aren't a good offensive team with either QB, and that touchdown total is the WORST for a team with at least a .500 record.
So good luck...:D
AUSTIN316426808
11-22-2005, 02:39 PM
Brad Johnson is a good QB but he's not right for the offensive design. They've got a bunch of fast finese players with a managment QB. They're surviving off turnovers and special teams, you can get away with that in college(Frank Beamer did it very well for a long time until Micheal Vick showed up) but it's going to catch up to you sooner or later in the NFL.
Panthers
Seahawks
Cowboys
Bears
There's your division champs unless something unexpected happens, although I'm not sure the Panthers are a complete lock yet, Cadillac is back so the Buccs have a real chance and how's this for a scary thought....Micheal Vick is actually learning how to throw so the Falcons have a real chance too.

I agree, his career will probably end because of injury, either that or he'll have enough to keep him from fully developing his full potential which is high as the sky.

We'll see. The Bears aren't gonna finish better than 9-7 so it'll depend on what the Vikings do.
By calling Culpepper a star player, I just mean that our whole offense had been geared around him and now he's gone. I well aware that our defense and special teams are keeping us afloat right now, but we're getting the wins and that's what matters. Vikes are gonna win the NFC North when they beat the Bears in week 17 and then I'm gonna come back to this thread and point out the fact that I called it way back here before week 12.
Austin..... The Vikes may not be too feasible as a legit playoff hopeful (Definately not as a legit Super Bowl contender) but they sure know how to beat The Packers this year. Owned at the Dome and Lambeau! Must be a rough time to be a Packer fan. :p

Well, I think the season would've went alot better if....uh...oh yeah, the entire roster wasn't half dead but it's cool you can only dominate a division for so long. I'm a true fan, not going to bail on 'em the first losing season in over a decade, ecspecially when injury is to blame.
You really think the Bears are gonna go 2-4 the rest of the way or is that just the die hard fan side of you talking?
And you're absolutely right, winning is the important thing no matter how it happens, my point was that you can't keep it up for 9 weeks straight.

4 road games and that's a pretty tough schedule. They'll probably beat the Pack once maybe twice and maybe MInn, but like I said, I think that game will be for the division.
AUSTIN316426808
11-22-2005, 06:36 PM
I've got 'em at 3-3....
Split with the Pack
If Orton has protection I think they'll take the Vikings
and I think they'll take one out of the other three, most likely Atlanta since they live off running.
If Rothlisbergr isn't back yet or not at 100% and they can knock him around they might be able to take the Steelers out too.

My ass he should. There's a list of people who should be put ahead of Brady. With the longest winning streak at 2, I don't think Brady deserves the regular season MVP.

Brady been doing great all season. If manning and others could get mvp with out winning SB then why not brady. I think brady is 2# or 3# on the qb raiting. this is brady best season for his stats in his carrer. BRADY MVP. MVP MVP, ok SB MVP is better :D
AUSTIN316426808
11-24-2005, 04:49 PM
Brady's stats don't matter, he's not a big stat player. He's know for his poise, leadership and managment skills so the fact he's having his best season doesn't mean anything. The team isn't what they were, that's what means something.
True you don't have to get to the Super Bowl to win an MVP but you do have to have more than a 2 game winning streak and have a great season that elevates your team not just your career QB rating. Last year Manning broke a record that was considered unbreakable and carried his team to the playoffs. Brady isn't elevating his team and if they make the playoffs at all it's going to be because of the defense not him.
Another thing to prove the stat argument....
Aaron Brooks has been one of the best QBs in the league stat wise over the past 5 years, in '03 he had the best touchdown to interception ratio in the league was in the top 5 in rating and broke two team records but all that great individual play didn't elevate his team there for he got no consideration. Brady didn't get a vote last year when the Pats won the division so I seriously doubt he'll get one this year considering the fact that if they make the playoffs it's not going to be by much.

That would've been my point. Brady's leading the league in passing yards but their team is barely treading water, leading a division that's the worst in the NFL. If you're gonna carry a one-dimensional team to the playoffs like Peyton Manning did, that's one thing. But the patriots have problems in a bunch of areas, and Brady hasn't exactly been carrying his team with staggering numbers.
AUSTIN316426808

Exactly, he's not doing anything special, just because he's having the best season of his career doesn't mean anything. He's 4th in QB rating but Palmer and Manning are the top two and they're leading the best teams in the league.

4 INT didn't help brady on this game. plus the defense when ice cold on the first half. (6-5) if theygo on a winning streak from now on i don't think that is good enouph to be in plyoffs? 42 players injured there best offeness & deffense are out, offeness/deffenss cornators are gone. it's not over yet they might get a shot at it if they don't you could say the colts has it all the way to win the SB. if the pats don't make it (31D) I will have to pick for Sb contenders Colts and bears. bears will kick the colts ass if they both make the superbowl better D. The Viks are 6-5 the Bears are 8-3, if they lost and dropped to 8-4 and the Viks went to 7-5 they'd still have one less win and one more loss so that's still a two game lead.
I think we can agree that the Viks hopes all lay on how they play when a game rolls around that they don't get 4 or 5 turnovers.

That's a 1 game difference dude. Plus, like I said we play the Bears the last week, so that right there would be our chance to even it up. Then it'd go to a tiebreaker for the division (Which I don't know who would win. If the Vikes won game 17 to force the tie, they'd each have a head to head win against each other so I think it'd go to divisional record, which still remains to be determined.)
There's still work to be done, but you guys just wait... The Vikes will be around come playoff time. (Or at the very least, game 17 will be for the division. We may win, we may not, but we'll make it interesting.)

Well, the Vikes won again and today they did it without a huge defense and special teams spectacle. Granted, hey could have played a lot better and put the game away a few different times but the bottom line is that they managed to win again. 5 straight now and we've got 3 of our last 4 at the Dome.
The Bears won too despite a major lack of offense. They got lucky they were playing such a weak Packers squad or they woulda gotten worked.
Even if the Vikes don't catch the Bears, our overall playoff hopes increased dramatically this week because we are now tied for the last wild card spot with Atlanta and Dallas.

Well lighting it up against weak teams is better than not lighting it up against them. The Bears didn't light much of anything up on Sunday against the Pack. Chicago always seem to just squeak out low scoring games which is a HUGE credit to their awesome defense, but if their offense could put points on the board, then they might actually be a serious contender.

49ers
Saints
Packers
Jets
Titans
Texans
They're all technically in the running but I think it'll come down to the last game of the season when the Texans play the 49ers, whoever loses that one is most likely to end up with the pick.
I'm not completely sold that the Texans would take Bush because they've already got a thousand yard rusher who can get the job done. And lord knows they need to work on that line, think what Davis,Carr and Johnson could get done with a line.
The Niners on the other hand would take him without thinking twice unless a really good deal comes up.
OK - here's my question about the BCS. . .
why is No. 3 Penn State playing pathetic Florida State? Shouldn't #3 play, at least someone in the top 10? It just shows what a sham the whole BCS thing is- the bowls are set up for drama and tv ratings, not to find out who the best teams actually are . . . PLAYOFFS PLAYOFFS PLAYOFFS

I think the Titans and Saints will each win at least one more. 49ers could win another now that Smith is back at the QB position, but you're right that last game is up in the air.
Houston does need more offensive linemen but if they used their #1 pick on a lineman the entire football community would be getting their nooses ready.

Florida State is far from pathetic, pathetic teams don't beat Virginia Tech.
Playoffs would still have controversy.
This year the best team is actually going to be who wins the Rose Bowl, they started 1 and 2, everybody said they were the best teams in college football and they've proved they are and we're going to find out who the best is. The BCS isn't perfect but a playoff wouldn't be either.
Most bowl games are just there for money and to prolong the season for fans. But the Rose,Sugar and Orange bowls have the best teams in the country. Like I said the BCS isn't perfect(it's only worked without controversy 2 years of it's exsistence) but neither would a playoff.

USC or Texas
I gotta say USC(even though my hate for 'em as no limit) because Texas hasn't really beat anybody but Ohio State and they've gotten into close games when Young hasn't played 100%.
USC on the other hand has beaten very good teams and when they get into a close game it isn't because one player isn't doing to well it's because they've played tough teams and Bush and Leinart always pull 'em through...yada yada yada Trojans get their SECOND straight.

Well you gotta think about it, the NFL is more competitive than it's ever been(10 years ago 10-6 was home field advantage now it's surviving).
There's free agency which is something college coaches don't have to worry about.
They get the best high school players in the country every year in bunches and don't have to worry about a salary cap. So when one heisman player leaves(Palmer) another steps in right away(Leinart) and now they've got two on one team(Bush). When they're gone next year they've got another one stepping in for 'em(White) along with All American recievers.
You get what I'm saying? It's just way easier in college.
ItsAlive75
12-09-2005, 07:47 AM
True, but even great teams slip up every once in a while. SC is lookin' like they won't lose a game in three years. That's insane.
I know an undefeated season's only been done once in the nfl (and those Dolphins players are STILL acting like real dicks about it) but I just can't compare it length wise.
AUSTIN316426808
12-09-2005, 11:48 AM
Well, like I said it's just more competitive, not to mention college isn't as competitive. If it were '95 and both teams were exactly the same and doing the exact same thing than people's opinions would probably be the other way around.
Going undefeated in the NFL was never supposed to happen again while in college if you've got the talent people actually expect you to go undefeated. As good as the Colts have been playing all year it wasn't until this past week that people started thinking(not confirming just thinking) they could actually do it.
I'm kinda nuetral on it.

Playin away against the Seahawks is really the only threat left, everything else is a locked win I'd say. But Peyton Manning is such a class act, he's the one guy I'd WANT to win it all... besides Kyle Orton.

Pierre, not Furcal. That lousy fuck signed with the Dodgers for more money over less years. I guess its okay though, he aint goin to the playoffs playin' for the Dodgers.

The Bears defense is one of the best in the league, but they aren't going anywhere with no offense. The Vikings are playing great football right now (On all sides of the ball, not just one.) and breathing down their necks... This week spelled the beginning of the end for the Chicago Bears dreamlike season.
Next week

We both have pretty good games next week and I could easily see both games going either way. Vikes and Bears could be evened up after all is said and done or the Bears could put that lead back to 2. Should be a good week of football...

Lovie Smith is a genius..
No announcement at all, leaves Orton in 'til halftime, then springs Grossman on the Falcons content secondary.
He knew the Falcons were going to run and try to make those backup safetys cheat up for play action so he never really stacked the line.
Blitzed Urlacher early to get Vick to make bad decision rather than scramble.

I feel the Bears have the best Defense because I've seen them play. They're athletic, fast, hard hitting and relentless, every single play they go full speed and hit the closest moving thing.
They shut down one of the top(1-5 not sure) rushing teams in the league while Alex Brown and Brian Urlacher took care of Micheal Vick. How often over the past six years have you been able to say ''took care of Michael Vick''?
Meanwhile that heart filled Defense you're talking about got burned 28-0.

I know what you mean, the tables are turned for the time being with the Bears headed to the playoffs and the Packers looking forward to the offseason but there are some games where that stuff doesn't matter.
Bears-Packers
Broncos-Chiefs
Cowboys-Redskins
Saints-Falcons
ect. ect.
Example- late 90's Packers were at the top 6-0, Bears sucked 2-5...game went down to a game winning touchdown drive with 44 seconds left.

The Packers are gonna beat the Bears this weekend. The Bears haven't won at Lambeau in like 9 or 10 years. Despite their impending loss, the Bears could still clinch the division this week, it'll just be a question of whether the Vikes can beat the Ravens. I think we can. The Ravens are pretty weak, but ya never know with the Vikings... They're so damn hot or cold this year.

He's coaching? That's pretty sweet. I'm sure they're losing anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter... plus they don't have to win this game or the next, so fuck it.
Yeah, he's got the headset on calling plays, changing plays and everytime Sorgi comes off the field he goes to Manning and/or the assistant coach.
Strong is underrated with or without the pro bowl pick, with the exception of Alstott(who's a running back anyway) fullbacks of leading rushers always make the pro bowl.
Speaking of the pro bowl, don't you think it's bullshit that Vick got in? And how about Mike Peterson not getting in?

I've always said Vick is the most overrated player in football.
I don't really follow the Jaguars so I wouldn't be able to tell ya if Peterson was any good. But linebackers are ALWAYS looked over. The pro bowl is a popularity contest anyway, but no one watches it so I could care less.

Vikes choked. Damn, Tice is an idiot.
*Down by 2 scores with about 8 minutes to go. 4 and a couple on about the 40 and he fuckin' punts it.*
Get some balls or get some heart or get the fuck off my football team, you fuckin' dumbass!
I really hope he gets fired in the off-season, but the Vikes 2nd half run might have saved his job. Damn it.

Technically it's not a choke if nobody expected it to happen.
Red Sox coming back on the Yanks from 0-3 was a choke..
Packers allowing the Eagles to convert a 4 and 26 was a choke..
Vikings not making the playoffs as bad as they are isn't a choke.

Vikings were winning and then they blew it. That's a choke. I wasn't refering to their whole season. All things considered, they'll be lucky to end it 7-9. That's better than I would have guessed at the start of the year.

I guess we just define the word differently...
A choke to you is a team who's winning, has a shot and losses, a choke to me is a team who doesn't do something they're expected to do.

A choke to me is any time someone doesn't do something that they should. To me, the Vikings should have won yesterday. They didn't so that was a choke. It doesn't have to be confined to 1 game, but in this case, it happens to be.
I'd say we define it the same. We just had different expectations.
When the Vikings have a lead after halftime (Especially a TD or more), I expect them to win. Especially against a rotten offense like Baltimore and especially when we're containing Lewis like we were.

Which 40 was it on?
If it's the Viks then I guess it's understandable(kinda) but if it was their 40 then I totally agree.

Well I didn't see the game and with the holiday I took off right after the Packer game and missed Primetime. If you say it was a halftime lead against the Ravens without any production from Lewis then they indeed should've won, then when you throw the playoffs in(which were still on the line at the time) then it's indeed a choke.

We were 40 yards from scoring an essential TD with about 8 minutes to go. Too far to kick a FG (Especially with that suckass Edinger.) but in my opinion, way too close to punt, and like you said... WIth the game and the playoffs on the line too!
I hate Tice. If I ever met him, I'd be getting arrested because I'd definately kick him in the balls.

What balls?
Punting from your 40 is showing confidence in your defense(but with the situation still a bit questionable)but punting from the other 40 is the exact opposite, showing no confidence in your defense or yourself for that matter.
With the Bears winning they weren't going to make the playoffs anyway so instead of being ticked off about it just look at that punt as most likely being the play that'll get you what you want...a new coach.

What I want is a Vikings playoff run followed up by a surprise SuperBowl win. But since we blew that, a new coach will have to suffice.
I sure hope our little 6 game win streak (Through all the adversity of losing the starting QB and the Love Boat. ) wasn't enough to save it for him.

Well after the Bears won, my post-season hopes were pretty much deflated, BUT we were sstill alive in the WC race. (Albeit behind 2 other teams for the last spot.) but we had a chance (However slim, we woulda have played week 17 with playoffs on the line.) But they fucked that up...
Not a good enough record for the playoffs, but good enough to not be getting a good draft pick... Damn them! I swear that some day theiy're gonna result in the heart attack that eventually kills me.

I actually knew somebody that had a heart attack and died after a terrible call during a Vikes game back in the late 80s.

WOOOOO!!!! NFC North Division champs! What a merry Christmas I had. Now all I have to do is root against the Cowboys cuz I'd give anything to see "The Tuna" happy.
I think I'll root for the Redskins.

Random entry...
I would be excited about the Saints getting Matt Lienart but the last couple of times we've drafted Heisman trophy winners they've either sucked or got loaded and joined a cult.

Little nutty?
You should've seen his special on 60 minutes,20/20 or whichever one it was, he completely flipped out. Some people just can't take pressure. The cult part wasn't a joke either, though I wouldn't say it was a cult but it was this ''community'' of people who lived in tents and just read books and prayed all day which now that I think about it does sound like a cult.

Not that I follow the Dolphins now or anything, but the boys on NFL Live seem to think he's "coming back to form". If I was a Miami resident I wouldn't care if he was good or not, I'd hate the fucker.

Actually, Dolphins fans should love that he's getting back into form(which I agree with)because the better he is by season's end the better trade deal they'll get for him.
If I had to guess I'd say they'll get about a conditional 3rd or 4th. With one game left and the Phins out of playoff contention they might let him get alot of playing time this week as a showcase for interested teams.

You think the Dolphins are gonna trade him?
If my entire offense consisted of 1 good WR (Chambers) and 1 good RB (Williams), I don't think I'd be looking at trading either of them.
