Nothing special about this Korean action drama. Youīve seen a similar story in a hundred american action movies..
Min-sik Choi (Oldboy) was pretty cool as a bad-guy though.

and Il Mare
Quite the combination I know but I enjoyed both movies, DoA obviously a bit more because it's more akin to my taste in movies. Il Mare was a good love story though, don't think I'll go see the remake though (is it still in theaters?).

The last "Asian" horror film I saw was the South Korean movie called Bloody Beach. It was merely okay.
I am now patiently waiting for netflix to ship me Bunshinsaba (also a South Korean film).

I liked it. There are a couple of plot points that don't make sense, but I've come to expect that from every movie I see these days. I thought towards the end of it that I had missed something, but everything came together in such a way that it made sense to me.
I blind bought this because I could get it for under $10, and I feel it was well worth the investment.

I liked it quite a lot. The whole idea of being scarred by your past (literally and figuratively...you have to watch the movie to get what I mean) in such a way that it affects everything you do is an interesting one.
I expected it to be a typical revenge flick, but it wasn't. There are enough twists and turns to keep you going, and things go off in directions that aren't exactly predictable.
If you watch it, let me know what you make of the ending. It's a bit...well, you'll just have to watch it.

"Imprint"
Pretty good īn far out story, although i was disappionted to see Miike turn away from the ghost scares early on in the movie, coz they were creepy as hell and to me the highligts of "Imprint". Especially the scene where the ghost is slowly showing up behind the geisa. Ooooh man, one of the best scares iīve had in years. But then Miike decides that he will rather disgus his audience than scare them and begins with his loving torture scenes, which is also fine by me, but i donīt enjoy it as much as the few ghost parts.
The only 2 problems i had with this movie was:
1. I didnīt understand half of what the japanese actors were saying. Most of them spoke worse english than Jackie Chan in "Rush hour".
2. I didnīt know how bad an actor Billy Drago really was before i saw this movie. Iīm surprised Miike wasnīt able to find a better actor for his leading role concidering heīs a more famous direcor than Takashi Shimizu.
But all in all a very good short-movie. And definitely recommendable.

Well, I just finished watching my first japanese horror movie ever and I must say I was a bit disappointed. It was "Pulse" and... I was expecting something ghastly like The Ring (I only saw the american version) but it had no real scares. The general mood was creepy, ok, but it was nothing compared to the shock and trauma that The Ring gave me. That continues to be THE SCARIEST movie I've ever seen in my life, still haunts me (even during the day, sometimes brrr).
Oh well, did anyone here love Pulse and can explain to me why is it listed as one of the best japanese horror movies?
The next one I'm watching will be A Tale of Two Sisters... I'll then tell you how it went :D

Just kidding... But not really.:D
What i liked the most about "Pulse" was the few ghost scares it had. Thought they were creepy as hell. Especially the encounter with the weird walking ghost lady in the forbidden room. That scene made the hair on my neck to stand up. That so rarely happens these days, that when it finally does itīs pleasure overload for me. :)

:o If we all had the same tastes there wouldn't be any discussion Forums, now would they? ;)
But yes... I think that the scene with the two girls in the forbidden room and the ghost's hair flying as it approached them with dangling arms was the creepiest of the movie :|
The only "problem" was that I was always expecting something really horrible to appear and it never did. But in a way, that built up the pressure during the entire movie, which is always good.
Angra
10-06-2006, 03:14 AM
The only problem I had with "pulse" was to keep track on the locations. Most of the time i had absolutely no idea where the characters were, and i felt that the director did nothing to explain.

The Maid
I was pleasantly surprised to find this one at Wal-Mart. I really liked it, mostly because of the "fish out of water" element to the movie. Rosa (the maid) doesn't understand anything about her employers' culture, language, traditions, etc., and I could see myself in her position. There were some genuinely creepy moments in the movie, and I was impressed with the special effects. I also was surprised by one aspect of the ending, but I won't give anything away. Overall, I'd recommend it.

Heey yesterday I saw my second asian horror movie :D Ok, I'll stop counting by the third or so.
It was A Tale of Two Sisters and I loved it! Unfortunatelly I made the mistake of getting the brazilian version (I'm portuguese) so it was a bit difficult to follow the dialogues, since the original voices were loud enough to mix with the brazilian and make a big mess :(
But.. the story is really twisted and it had some seriously scary moments. The performances were great, I loved the melancholy of the whole thing and the movie actually made me sad in the end. It had that asian sensitivity that just makes american movies look... a bit shallow.
It was great and I definatelly think you should see it!

Just plain weird.
"Rinne"
Thought it was quite good.
It was easy to see that Shimizu had got more money on his hands and that he had brought something with him from USA. Good CGI.

did you like it? i loved it and Rinne too both great films...did you see the ghost school movies...whispering corridors...momento mori...wishing stairs?
I canīt really say that i liked "Marebito". I didnīt find it scary at any time, just weird. That was disappointing, coz iīll always connect the name Shimizu with scary ideas. "Marebito" had none of those.
"Rinne" on the other hand, had a few nice scares and a good horror story that didnīt look TOO much like Ju-on ("Ju-on: the grudge 2" comes closest). And i loved the scene where the girl is looking at the broken glass in her hand and sees the killer from the past, while in the past the killer looks at the blade on his knife and sees the girl from the present. That was awesome and new and reminded me of the scene in "Ju-on the grudge 2" with the ghosts of the future and the hanging couple, remember? Fucking original!!!
And about the Ghost School movies... Iīve only seen "Wishing stairs". That was enough for me. Except for the last 10 minutes of the movie, "wishing stairs" just reminded me of some drama about shoolgirls and their problems. Didnīt need to see more of that series after that.

Well, my most recent viewing wasn't something I hadn't seen before.
Mermaid In A Manhole
I enjoy this movie quite a bit and agonize over my lack of ability to kill the mermaid myself and get the shit OVER with! Nice movie to squirm to, either over the WAY "over the top" gore, the agonizingly drawn out lonjevity of a diseased pus squirting bare chested cutie of an asian mermaid (Yeah, it's wierd feeling attraction to something that's oozing pus all over the place).
Anyway, see it, own it. You'll be piping with pride showing it to your friends and watching them squirm through the flick!

Hey I saw Audition yesterday. I think I have a hard time understanding asian horror movies in general, I've seen three so far and was a bit confused in all of them.
***SPOILER***
Audition wasn't an exception, near the end I couldn't figure out exactly what was the dream and what was reality. The main character seemed to be dreaming about the torture, but then it looked like that was, in fact reality, and as he passed out he dreamt of being safely in bed with the girl. Confusing....
***END SPOILER***
Anyway, although a bit slow in the beginning, it became really sadistic and disturbing. Quite good. :D

Doppelganger. This was quite a bit different from Kurosawa's other films. Although the atmosphere and soundtrack mark it as one of his films, the slightly comedic tone and happy (or at least hopeful) ending make it a horse of a different color. Koji Yakusho, as usual, turns in a sterling performance in the lead role. All in all, I'd recommend it to fans of Kurosawa, but don't make this one your starting point. Overall: 7/10.

Dark Water -- I'm not a huge fan of the Americanized version, but I liked this one. The little girl who played Ikuko was really good, and I recognized a few actors from other J-horror movies I've seen. I'm not sure about the ending, however. I'm not saying the American version's was better, but the Japanese version seemed to try to tie up too many loose ends. It was rather bittersweet, so it wasn't a "happy" ending. Of course, I'm one of those "weirdos" who likes it when a movie doesn't end exactly the way I want, and this movie didn't come anywhere near ending the way I wanted.

The Red Shoes. I liked it, but I'm not sure I fully understood what was going on. I did have a couple of interruptions during the movie, so I'll probably have to sit down and rewatch it when I get a chance. Of course that's pretty much par for the course as far as Asian movies go.:D I do have a couple of questions, so if you haven't watched the movie you might want to stop reading now.
1. I get that the mother was the reincarnation of the mean woman from the past (the one who took the shoes from the soon-to-be hunchbacked old woman). Was Tae-soo the reincarnation of the ballet dancer who fell down the stairs? I ask because of the ballet connection and her morbid fascination with the shoes.
2. I listened to the director's commentary during a couple of key scenes, and he kept talking about Tae-soo symbolizing the red shoes. Huh???? Does that mean that Tae-soo was dead or am I completely off in left field?
3. Building off of #2, what the heck happened to both the mom and Tae-soo? I have my hunches, but I'm curious to hear what someone smarter than me has to say. One of the people in the commentary said it was obvious in the script, but apparently the director made it more open-ended for the film.
Thanks in advance.

"Re-cycle"
If Neil Gaiman ever made a horror script iīm sure it would look a lot like Re-cycle.
Re-cycle..... What can i say..... Half horror, half fairytale/nightmare. But man, what a perfect blend!!!
The visuals and scenery are amazing and the different ghosts are quite scary.
Iīll admit that the first 15-20 minutes was slow and half boring (Maybe because i saw it without subtitles ), but it sure picks up the pace from there.
The Pang brothers has taken a huge step up with this one (never been a big fan of "the eye"). And nice finally to see some asian directors with creative imagination and lots of new ideas for the genre. Hail!!
The best horror movie to come out of 2006 imho.
Thanks Omcdave. ;)

Ab-normal Beauty. Damn, that was one disturbing flick! I went in expecting a typical Asian ghost story and was totally unprepared for this one. I had to stay up extra late after this one to get some of the images out of my head.

Face. Not bad, but it didn't really hold my attention very well for some reason. I think I might need a short break from Asian horror.

Sorum - It's slow as molasses in winter, but it's actually pretty good. The ending (as with most Asian movies) made me scratch my head a little, but I "think" I got the overall idea. It's not really a horror movie, but it is disturbing.

2,5.
Most of the movie is about a woman who finds beauty in death and walks around taking pictures of it. Then follows the last 15-20 minutes that somehow seems out of place.

Imprint.
Pretty cool flick, the GF hates movies with fetuses tho. She couldnt watch bits of it, same thing with dumplings. Imprint would have been alot better if he'd just made it in Japanese with subtitles tho, the accents were hard to understand at times and i think it kinda took away from the feel of making it a true miike movie, it felt almost like i was watching a dubbed version. Still good tho.

Casshern 6/10. Bit dissapointed with this, was hoping for some more action scenes. The scenes look amazing though.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children 8.5/10. Awwwesome! Recommend it to anyone, even people that arent necessarily fans of the Final Fantasy games, or even anime for that matter.
The Host----7.5/10
The creature CGI was excellent and the story was pretty good as well. There were a few odd sections that threatened to bog the movie down, but it kept my attention all the way.
we need MORE monster movies.
