Not bad really but to enjoy it here's what you have to do. Buy this DVD cheap and then open it and remove the disc. Find out which side contains the original version and which contains the MTV dubbed version. With a large sharpie proceed to black out the MTV side JUST IN CASE you're curious or put it in upside down. Put in the DVD side and watch the original Korean version, it's kind of fun.

i get the majority of my asian films at one of the many asian malls we have here in Toronto.
You can usually get them 8 for 30$ and they are boots .. but DVD boots .. great packaging and perfect picture/sound.

the only problem is that although a large percentage of them have english subtitles ..most of the packaging has no english at all. Because of this i have bought some titles over and over again.
(occasionally there is no english subtitles either)

For all i know I've had a copy of Kairo in my hands and didnt know it. I should bring someone who can read chinese characters with me next time :D

By sheer coincidence Ive just finished watching Ong-Bak. Thought the stunts/action sequences were outstanding and visually it looked great but whoever scripted it needs a few more lessons. The slo-mo replays didnt bother me much, it made me appreciate the whole 'no wire-work' side of the production.

Pistol Opera

Directed by Seijun Suzuki, who also made Branded to Kill. This movie is basically a remake of Branded to Kill, only with a female in the lead role. From this, I've concluded that Suzuki's style just isn't for me. It seems a little too self-consciously artsy for my taste. Overall: 5/10... but those who enjoyed Branded to Kill will probably like it more than I did.

I watched the short first then the full length(which made more sense and changed the story slightly)and it was every bit as disturbing the second time around.

There were times when I was asking myself "how the hell did they get away with the subject matter?" It is definitely the jewel of the three.

As I said in general it was hilarious and I have to say I liked it a lot better than both Stacy and Wild Zero (which were ok) and that's amazing because BB lacked zombies. Anyway, it was a fun watch and I absolutely LOVED the whole scene where the skin was blasted from somebody and then his skull was uppercut into the sky.

I thought this was a great anthology, with one small problem... Dumplings was the first film. I enjoyed both Cut and Box, but Dumplings was so strong that it sort of overshadowed what came after. I think it would have worked better if that one had come last. Overall: 8/10

Towards the end she seemed to favor Jin-seong(the boy) and forgot all about her baby.

But your right her attachments towards her children were'nt exactly strong ones, but by the end of the film they've already established that both mum and dad were coming apart mentally.

I love the cinimatography in this one, the editing is great too really good stuff. I do think we get a few too many shots of the tall grass but that's minor. What really gets me is how torn I am on the story after watching it a couple times. On the one hand I love the simple story and the way it's executed but on the other hand I think there's so much potential for more in that one. Overall I can't fault the movie for what it wasn't and merely judge it for what it is which is a really good film. 7.5/10

Yup, Criterion versions are always the way to go if they're available.

Overall I thought it was a good movie, not exactly scary, but had some tense and suspenseful moments, like when the girl had to run as fast as she could to get to her bf's hut. The atmosphere of the movie was well thought out and executed. I don't know how many times I'd watch it again tho...

2LDK, the other movie in the Duel Project with Aragami. I really didn't expect to like 2LDK as much as Aragami but i was very surprised with this one. It starts out a little slow but soon the rivalry between these two actresses lead to an all out war with everything from swords to electric chainsaws! The final bit is great as well, really good film in my opinion. A lot of the shots seemed very "Raimi-esque" as well but maybe I'm the only person who thought so.

R Point

This movie ambles along a little too slowly most of the way through, so I ended up pausing and continuing it later a couple times before finishing. A lot of the members of the platoon (more accurately a squad by the number) irked me for flipping out so easily and so soon. I liked the reserved and calculating Lieutenant though. The premise of ghosts getting "innocent" people to kill themselves is a good one, but I must admit, it would have been more satisfying for me if it were evil people, not "green" soldiers just wanting to get back home ASAP, that were lured into off'ing each other.

There's some irony to the fact that the warning engraved on the stone toward the beginning says "those with blood on their hands shall not return" yet it was the ghosts that tricked most of the soldiers to get their "first blood" on their hands in the first place.

In the UK the best version is either the Tartan 2 disc special edition or the Tartan NTSC single disk edition(this version is the "Theatrical version"
The original Tartan Special Edition(that came in a nice tin) had slight problems with the sutitles, they were hard to see in places and were "burnt on" so you couldn't remove them, mind you can't see why you would want to.
The new special edition(not in a tin) has sorted out the subtitles and has the same 8 minutes extra footage in the film and an alternate ending that the original special edition had.
The single disc version also has the newer clearer subtitles but lacks the 8 mins and it will only play on NTSC compatible players.
Both versions are easily available from places such as www.play.com. I would personally go for the the special edition of it.
Hope that helps.

A very interesting film that is mostly carried by Shinya Tsukamoto's strong acting. It's rare to find a director who is also a talented actor, which is why Tsukamoto's films are always such a pleasure to watch. Takashi Shimizu does a good job in the director's seat, although I don't think that this film is as strong as Ju-On was. Still well worth watching though, despite the somewhat confused narrative. Overall: 7/10

He's so nonchelant I love it heh. Just says to the mother he needs to talk to her kid then walks upstairs and beats the crap out of him (well he wasn't TOO bad to him). The ending was well done too with his sis and all... I don't want to spoil it but Beat did a great job in the acting and directing dept. I think. Oh... and the face shot, I was expecting a head shot but that guy (to protect spoilers again) got shot right in the face. Good stuff.

It's certainly worth the rental,a little slow going at first but good.I've heard some of the hype...the Korean "Apocalypse Now" and "as good as Session 9".I'm not sure about all that but it's a good film and worth the time in my opinion.

"Nang Nak" 3/10

Thai drama/horror.

For some people "Nak nak" might be a beautiful movie about eternal love. But the reason I ordered this one, was because it was said to have a very scary ending.... Oh please.

I thought it was a long, dull, slow-going love story about a man who comes home from war to his wife and newborn child, unaware that they both are ghosts, and therefore just continues his normal life together with them...Zzzzzzz...

No doubt this movie demanded some outstanding performances from the actors playing husband & wife, because the story between those two builded on lots of emotions. I didnīt think they were all THAT good, but what do I know, iīm not Thai.

And what the hell was up with their black teeths???

I have absolutely no interest in getting my hands on "Dumplings". A 91 minutes version sounds more like one huge sleeping pill.

Three Extremes 2

Overall, not nearly as good as the first film, although each of these three had their moments. Memories had some good atmospheric and creepy moments (the dream sequence, the parking garage scene) but was ruined by the stupid, predictable twist. The Wheel was totally baffling. I'm not sure if this one was meant to be surreal, or if there's some cultural nuances there that a round-eye like me just doesn't pick up on, but this one didn't do it for me. Going Home was by far the best of the three, although it wasn't really horrific, mostly just sad. I'd say that this DVD is worth renting, if only for Going Home. Overall: 5/10

I liked all three segments, Park Chan-Wooks Cut being my favorite. Dumplings lived up to its hype for me. I was pleasantly surprised by Box, as I had heard from a lot of people that it was far inferior to the other 2.

All in all, I think they ordered them well, and I'm not unhappy at all to have it in my collection. 7/10

Glad to see that someone liked and got Izo. I love Miike, but I just couldn't get into this one. I might have to try watching it again. Last Asian movie seen....J Horror Anthology: Legends. It's actually six episodes from a TV show (I think). A couple of them were silly, but She Bear, Yamaba, and Lost Souls were worth the purchase price. None, however, are going to win any awards.

I like these anthologies because 1) you can get them dirt-cheap (I got mine for $5.50), and 2) the stories last just about the right amount of time (in the case of these about 15 minutes each).

yeah Izo was more of a visual film...although i suppose there was some sort of message about violence and spirituality....but i think Miike should stick to horror, black comedy and Yakuza films and stay the hell away from philosophy

i bought Evil Dead Trap about a week ago....hopefully it will be here today

i've heard mixed reviews

i suppose the last asian "horror" film i saw was Izo....which was very good...kind of a Japanese El Topo

Not bad, the story was more comprehensible than the first. If you liked Ichi the Killer it's worth it to watch Ichi 1.

"turn" 6-7/10

Itīs about a woman whoīs reliving the same day over and over while being in a coma after a traffic accident. The thing is, that sheīs the only living being in this repeated "dimension".

You could call it a serious version of "groundhog day", but to compare those 2 movies wouldnīt be fair to either.

Would prefer "Groundhog day" any day though.

Alive

Directed by Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus), Alive is the story of a man who is spared from execution only to become the victim of horrific experiments. Alive is a much more slowly paced film than Versus was, lacking much of that film's frenzied action. However, the fight scenes late in the film are some of the most impressive "Matrix-style" martial arts I've seen. The entire movie is filmed with a very washed-out color scheme, appearing almost black and white for much of the running time. Although it does sort of drag near the end, and probably could have stood to have left fifteen minutes on the cutting room floor, Alive is a worthwhile effort. Overall: 7/10

Death Trance...english dubbed...what a piece of shit...the bad dubbing (no ambient at all) and rock'n'roll music made it even worse...story sucked, design sucked, fighting sucked, actors sucked ...but not in a good bad way.....just a bad martial art movie:mad:

The Tale of Two Sisters -- Really liked this one. It's not really scary, but it has its share of weirdo moments.

Story of Ricky

Yeah, I know I'm a little late on this one, but it was worth the wait. Story of Ricky has to be the most over the top martial arts movie I've ever seen. The plot was stupid and nonsensical, but the crazy action sequences and gore more than make up for it. On top of this, there are hilarious Engrish subtitles. Definitely recommended. 7/10

Musa 6/10

Plot summary taken from IMDB:

In 1375, China was in chaos between Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty. Coryo (an ancient kingdom of Korea then) sent a delegation of many diplomats, soldiers and a silent slave (Woo-sung Jung) to make peace with the new Chinese government. However, this delegation got charged as spies and sent in exile to a remote desert. On the way the group came across a Yuan troop, and the Coryo soldiers managed to survive the battle. They began the journey toward the faraway home country, where they met the Yuan troop again. When they found out the Yuan troop kidnapped a Ming princess (Ziyi Zhang), they decided to rescue her so that they could get a ship to go home. Then the battle began...

End of Summary.
