No I haven't seen that. Did it coincide with their reunion stuff?

Yeah, it pretty much includes everything. Their history, their time in Germany, all of their Beat Club performances, their lives after the Monks, and their reunion stuff. Definitely pick it up if you can.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Monks-Transatlantic-Feedback-Dietmar-Post/dp/B001RBY9D0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1242969741&sr=8-1

It's only £10 on Amazon UK, which is way cheaper than what I paid for it over here.

I knew a few tracks going into this one...I was surprised at how chill it is. Most of the songs are pretty slow and calm, which surprised me being familar with the more upbeat tracks like Jenny Don't Be Hasty and New Shoes.

I'm still enjoying it, but I wish it had a bit more energy. The above tracks are catchy as Hell (especially Jenny - really cool song), but so far most of the album is sounding pretty similar. I'll reserve full judgment until I give a few most listens...

More or less as much a masterpiece as Pet Sounds. Listen to the track "Wind Chimes" off of this record for a creepy, unsettling, brilliant piece of minimalism.

Actually, for anyone that's interested:

You know, the more I listen to this the more I enjoy it. Now that I've got rid of my preconceived ideas, I'm really getting into the music. He's got an incredible voice, and most of the songs are really simple but have a great melody.

A new favourite for sure...not like anything I've heard before. Really powerful, uplifting and catchy stuff. Not to mention the tribal aspect of the whole thing - gives what could be a pretty basic folk-rock album a whole different flavor.

It's been awhile since I've found album that's really affected me as much as this after just the first few listens. Stunning.

love the pixies - come on pilgrim, their pre-Surfer album - is a bit more raw and doolittle - which is a classic in my mind and comes right after Surfer - is a bit more polished.

i'm not as big a fan of their later stuff but i do think they are kind of underappreciated. they really opened doors in the post-punk musical movement.

as for me - i've really gotten into Silversun Pickkups - i bought Swoon on the suggestion of a friend and at first thought - 'i don't like poppy crap' but as i listened to it i got more into it. guess you should never assume what your tastes are

As long as I live
I won't know why
Why some of my friends
Turn to indigo, God

They just gave up
Thats what they did
The secret thing they very well hid
Everyone loses when heroin wins
I just miss my indigo friends

These are not bad men
These are not bad girls
They just stray by
In their own little world

Wrestling Dan and Tom and Jay
Will and others showed life today
Fought that fight no one wins
Heroin stole my indigo friends

As time slips by
I sit and wonder why
Why them not me
Oh why them not me

I thank the Lord did not go there
Really didn't see their life to sin
Really didn't know till the bitter end
Heroin stole my indigo friends
Indigo friends

As long as I live

Right on, Elvis. You and I seem to be right on the same page when it comes to 60s-70s stuff.

You're absolutely right when you say "criminally underrated".
Just like the Monks, actually. Both bands have hugely influenced rock music, but most people (rock musicians included) will never realize their contribution.

picked up a few used CDs ..

one of them is the soundtrack to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - it has some fun tunes on it (esp. Jungle Love)

also - a cd which is a tribute to the music of Tim and Neil Finn .. all done by women.

a lot of it is that samey acoustic dull stuff of the more obscure songs - but there is a great version of 'six months in a leaky boat' done by someone with a really cool voice.

6 months... is one of my all time favorite songs..

Speaking of great compilation albums, one I think you might really dig is called Shakin' Fit!:

http://content.answers.com/main/content/img/amg/pop_albums/cov200/drd600/d694/d69487jew3q.jpg

It's a bunch of old dirty, energetic rock 'n roll/R&B/soul dance songs. It's out of print now, but it's not that hard to find online for download if you're interested. I highly recommend it.

Anyone who has heard either of these two albums will know why.

She's a true blues soul; her incredible voice like a muted trumpet, and finger-picking skills that would make Jimmy Reed or Son House smile.

Anyone who loves and/or appreciates the blues, check her out if you haven't yet.

Abner Jay- The True Story of Abner Jay

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_R83b6nPuDmg/Sf4aUB9vslI/AAAAAAAAADU/3_tB80UKnec/s320/abnerjaytrue.jpg

He used to perform as a one-man band, I guess. His sound is super-dirty Delta bluesy, but there's a lot of obvious gospel and rock n' roll influence. The guy's voice could sink a ship; it's incredible. He even has a Roy Orbison-sounding ballad on there. But overall it's just really gritty, unrehearsed, and eclectic. You should definitely check it out.

Oh man, it was pretty great. My uncle is actually really good friends with the couple that owns Norton, so I get to be privy to some incredible goings-down. I also got to talk with Cynthia Plaster Caster at the Andre Williams reading, too. She was just there hanging out, so I bought her a copy of Andre's book. Haha, good times.

Anyway, I'm really digging this Heavy Trash album. It's fairly removed from Pussy Galore and Blues Explosion. It's kind of like rockabilly thrown in a blender; a little punk, blues, some Tom Waits maybe. Definitely interesting stuff.

Just a heads-up...the more I listen to Winter of Mixed Drinks, the less impressed I get. It's still a good album, but it doesn't have much staying power - gets old quick.

Barenaked Ladies - All in Good Time

Been anticipating this for a long while now...BNL has always been one of my favourite bands, and I've been very curious to see what they would come up with sans co-founder Steven Page. The verdict? Maybe not a new masterpiece, but still a damn good listen with a few tracks that hearken back to some of their best work. Four Seconds wouldn't have been at all out of place on Gordon, for example, and is easily one of the best songs on the disc.

Even without Mr. Page, I'd still highly recommend this to any and all fans of BNL. Now, fingers crossed Page lives up to his word and puts out another solo album soon...

Its a beast of a very different colour...In the interest of full disclosure I've never been a huge fan of Crue. The only problem with this one is that it does have that "produced" sound in places that kind of detracts from this kind of shit, but otherwise its pretty fantastic. I hesitate to recommend it because we have very different taste in music most of the time (a few notable exceptions notwithstanding), but I'd say its at least worth a listen.
