In New York City, Daphne “Daphy” Urban reflects on being a four hundred and fifty year old vampire without a male relationship since Byron died from a bad bite when Uncle Sam greets her and tells her that they need her.  She is escorted to a top spy cell where J gives Daphy and fellow vampires Benny Polycarp of Missouri and Cormac O’Reilly of Manhattan an offer they cannot refuse.  Work for the Feds as espionage ring Darkwing or die.

Daphy is assigned to get close to nefarious arms dealer Bonaventure who sells to the highest bidder especially terrorists.  She is unsure whether she is to kill the man or just bring him in.  As she struggles with her assignment, her two associates battle to accomplish their tasks.  Meanwhile she knows someone is following her, which she assumes is either an untrusting J operative or a vampire hunter.  Darius della Chiesa, extraordinaire vampire slayer, knows he must kill Daphne, but he feels like a traitor as he desires her too.

Fans of paranormal thrillers will appreciate the exciting first Vampire Chronicle, BEYOND THE PALE.  The story line is a counter terrorism tale enhanced by the audience belief that vampires, hunters, and an assortment of other creatures exist.  The star crossed romance between the hunter and the vampire adds to the feel that the uncanny is real.  Readers will value this superior supernatural suspense and look forward to more adventures starring the Darkwing secret agents.

Beyond the Pale by Savanna Russe
There are books that I usually enjoy and then books that I can't put down. While this one isn't one that I couldn't put down it was very enjoyable. I felt with Daphy all the emotions of her grief, happiness and confusion while dealing with her Mother, stuck in the 70's coot, a stuck up pain in the butt military boss and the love of her life that hates her. I loved it and can't wait untill the next book is out.

I'm going to be as honest as I can be about this book. I actually liked the idea that it stated the events of 9/11 in order to make it feel more real to the reader, and further demonstrate the effects of what could happen if this next attack would occur. However, the Anne Rice rip-offs did get to me and made me rather upset. Not only did they mention Marius (switched the M to a D, clever) but Luis and Lestat as well. I suppose that it would be alright if the vampires shared the same characteristics, but turning into an angelic bat (however you want to describe it) was a little hard for me to imagine and not true to Anne Rice's beloved vampires. The plot kept me interested, and the author didn't shy away from detailed sexual activity. I finished it in one day, being as I couldn't put it down. With horror, action, romance, drama, and even humor, this book was wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone who likes vampires, and I personally can't wait to see what else this author has in store for The Darkwing Chronicles.

Beyond The Pale
I just finished this book. It's supposed to be a vampire romance novel. I found it to be enjoyable except for the fact that it revolves around an attempted post 9/11 attack. The plot IS interesting though. A good read for all vampire fans. Just try to ignore the Anne Rice rip-offs, with character names such as Louis and Lestat.
