Alone With Her
Psychological horror movies focusing on sexual obsession are certainly nothing new, but Alone With Her takes a somewhat fresh approach in its presentation: The film is shot entirely as if seen through the camera lenses of a nebbish but potentially deadly stalker.
Doug (Colin Hanks) is a video voyeur, taking his trusty portable with him everywhere he goes. He likes peeking down blouses, up skirts, and anywhere else he can as he strolls along the beaches, parks, and shopping centers near his home. One day, he spies Amy (Ana Claudia Talancón) as she herself is spying on an ex-boyfriend and his new lover — her tears move him to the next level, and he finds out where she lives, plants various cameras and sound equipment inside her apartment, then sets out to meet the vulnerable young woman.
Doug falls into a lustful obsession with Amy, watching her every move and manipulating her life as he insinuates himself into it… but what will happen if Amy doesn't return Doug's love?
I'm sure you can figure out the answer to that question, but the journey to it is still quite interesting. The filming technique is particularly well done (even as some shots take on a more cinematic quality and forsake the spy-cam look, it's seamless), the movie is thoughtfully written (suspenseful enough, if not necessarily surprising), and very ably-acted (the leads are perfectly cast, and their performances leave lasting impressions).
A dark little movie that just might make you think twice before borrowing a friend's hairbrush, Alone With Her is opening in limited release on January 17.
