HDC Movie of the Week #2 - Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)
Well, the first week's nominated film, Troll Hunter received 10 solid backings from HDC members, so it is a recommendation for everyone who hasn't seen it yet. (Related LINK)
For this week, I have chosen the controversial Del Toro effort, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. ![]() Essentially a remake of the cult classic TV film from 1973 of the same name, the film released to mixed reactions from horror fans the world over. Some lauded the scripting and the daring muted violence portrayed in it, others thought it disappointed and didn't live up to the original's promise & premise, despite it's R-rated certification. If you ask me, I thought it was a solid little entertainer. Despite it's flaws, it kept me seated for the entire duration, something which most recent films haven't been able to do. Maybe because I haven't watched the original yet, had a lot to do with the above.

Although not as creepy, iconic and well made as the original one I still found the remake to be fun and interesting.
Some of the bits are really played out and the story gets a little over explained by the end of it but I applaud them for tweaking the story and making it their own so were not left with a shot by shot remake of the original. In the end it doesn't live up to its predecessor but its still a fun monster movie.

Its not a bad movie, with some decent acting performances and a beautiful set. I don't think they came close to capturing the atmosphere of the original, but its still a decent movie. Worth watching if you have the chance and some free time, but definitely not one to go out of your way to see. 6/10 type movie for me.
