Dangerous Baby Names

I'd forgotten about this case until it came up in the news yesterday:

http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/314791

I feel like I'm missing something. Since when is it okay to take a child away from its parents for having an undesirable name? I realize the parents are a tad racist:rolleyes:, but was there any evidence of child abuse or neglect? The reports seem to be rather vague on this point.

It's a tough call for me. I feel very sorry for the children of this family being exposed to such hate, but I'm not sure there's any real due cause to take the kids away. What do you think?

You must have missed this part:

The child welfare authorities said their action was based on evidence of past violence in the family.

That's what I meant by "vague".

I'm against taking kids away from the parents unless there is actual violence being committed towards them as the alternative is the kids end up in the care system and that is a horrible fate so the kids find themselves in a far worse situation more often than not. I really feel sorry for the people involved in this case-seems like a "lose" all around situation-very sad.

Overall, it doesn't sit well with me, but I can't help but think it's a wash. This kid is either going to grow up raised by facist hate-mongers or grow up bouncing from foster home to foster home and/or orphanage to orphanage, while the Gov and his family fight over where he should be. I also agree with Wicker, if domestic violence was such as issue it should have been given more exposure, not glossed over in such a general manner. Six in one, half dozen in the other, I guess, but I'm all for a free and open society. This doesn't seem like something that a free and open society would allow, so I can't help but not like this.

Past violence? If it is not current or has stopped than they have no right to remove the children. If they knew about it in the past why did they wait till now? Also I believe you should have to feel out a form to get a name approved.
