need help figuring out what movie this is...

hey guys,

I really need help trying to figure out what movie this is. all i can remember is that it's a late 80's early 90's movie. it was about these two teenagers who found these little creatures, i'm not sure where they found them, but i remember on of them hiding them in a basement.

I always remembered the scene where the teenage boy and girl were walking on a sidewalk down a street, and the girl had one of the creatures in a bird or hamster cage, but it was covered over by a cloth or blanket. and she wouldn't tell the boy what she had, then after him asking about it, she lifted up the showed him.

any ideas?

At the beginning it sounds similar to the gate. It might be the gate 2 since I haven't seen gate 2.

yeah it's not the gate or gate 2. it does sound similar but i seen them both. it sucks i can't figure it out. what other movie deals with little creatures that are in a bird or hamster cage? lol
