Threads (1984)

Threads is a British television drama produced by the BBC in 1984. Written by Barry Hines and directed by Mick Jackson, it is a documentary-style account of a nuclear war and its effects on the city of Sheffield in northern England.

Filmed in late 1983 and early 1984, the primary plot centres on two families: the Kemps and the Becketts — as an international crisis between the United States and the Soviet Union erupts and escalates. As the United Kingdom prepares for war, the members of each family deal with their own personal crises. Meanwhile, a secondary plot centered upon Clive J. Sutton, the Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council serves to illustrate for the viewer the United Kingdom government's then-current continuity of government arrangements. As open warfare between NATO and the USSR-led Warsaw Pact begins, the harrowing details of the characters' struggle to survive the attacks is dramatically depicted. The balance of the film details the fate of each family as the characters face the medical, economic, social, and environmental consequences of a nuclear war. Both the plot and the atmosphere of the film are extremely bleak.

Okay, it isn't strictly horror, but it is certainly horrific. Has anyone else seen this? I'm pretty interested in nuclear weapons, Protect and Survive etc. I'm studying The Manhattan Project at Los Alamos on my course at the moment. We all know the devestation that the use of these weapons can bring about, but this film delves much deeper than the initial blast to a totally changed world. I'd recommend this to anyone who hasn't seen it; the whole film/show is available on Google Video.

I saw clips of this on a documentary a while back but not seen the whole thing yet-I'll deffo check it out it looks very interesting-cheers.

I did not know this series existed. It is not my cup of tea I like my post nuclear war stories with zombies and mutants in them, however I think maybe my hubby would like this. He likes stories of characters struggling to survive against impossible odds. However before I recommend it to him I have to ask, is there allot of gore in this film and my hubby can not stand that.

There isn't really gore asuch as there isn't really an antagonist. People get hurt and everything is a bit grim. There's a hospital scene with blood on the floors and some grizzly operating scenes but they flick away after a couple of seconds, you just get an idea of what is happening.

It is meant to be a realistic portryal of the aftermath of a nuclear attack, so it doesn't go overboard but equally it doesn't pretend to be anything less than it is.
