Johnny Depp is The Thin Man!

When Johnny Depp wants to make a movie, it usually gets done and his latest pet project is a remake of the 1934 mystery/comedy The Thin Man with his Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall at the helm.

"The Thin Man has long been a favorite of mine and with Rob at the helm, I know we're in great hands," Depp told Deadline.

Studio Warner Bros. clearly agrees. "There is no one more perfectly suited to portray Nick Charles than Johnny Depp," said Warners president Jeff Robinov.

The original movie, based on the Dashiell Hammet novel of the same name, followed retired detective Nick Charles (William Powell) and his affluent socialite wife (Myrna Loy) as they banter their way through the solution of a murder case.

The Thin Man was nominated for an Academy Award and spawned into a franchise with five sequels, ending with 1947's Song of the Thin Man.

Depp will produce the movie which will combine elements from the first two Thin Man movies and will reportedly add a couple musical numbers. Warner Brothers has already assembled a short list of screenwriters in Terry Rossio (On Stranger Tides), Jerry Stahl (Permanent Midnight, and Christopher McQuarrie (Depp's upcoming The Tourist).

Considering the wealth of projects Depp is already attached to, whichever writer is chosen to write the screenplay will have plenty of time to complete it. Up next for Depp is Tim Burton's adaptation of Dark Shadows.

I like Johnny Depp, but I can't see him as Nick Charles at all. The mention of musical numbers also worries me- it indicates they're not taking the source material seriously, and it will be played as a farce. I imagine they'll "update" it as well.
