The Third Man remake

First of all, if you haven't seen Carol Reed's post-WWII classic The Third Man, then you can't call yourself a movie fan. Just saying.

But now the philistines among you may have a chance to make up for it if the scuttlebutt over at Chud is on the mark. According to that site, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire might be starring in a remake of The Third Man which is being written by Eastern Promises screenwriter Steven Knight.

"The package comes from Canal Plus and it's going out for bidding, and the bidding is likely to be fierce," says Chud. "That's a hell of a line-up, after all. And it's before they have a director in place."

The site cautions that this is just a rumor, albeit "a pretty solid one." And Chud isn't a site that runs BS, so this is interesting. Of course, The Third Man is one of the all-time great movies. No, seriously -- go rent it now if you haven't seen it.

Chud raises the question of which character each actor would play. Putting aside the question of why a remake should even be made, it seems likely that the golly-gee-whiz Maguire would work as the innocent (if drunken) writer Holly Martins, while Leo would be better suited as the morally dubious Harry Lime.
