Sam Raimi's world of "Warcraft"

Sam Raimi has signed on to direct "Warcraft," the live-action film adaptation of the fantasy videogame franchise "World of Warcraft."

Legendary Pictures and vidgame publisher Blizzard Entertainment are mounting the film, and Warner Bros. will co-finance and distribute.

The team boasts an impressive pedigree: In addition to the director of "Spider-Man," the partners have added "The Dark Knight" producer Charles Roven to the creative mix.

The plan is for Raimi to supervise development of "Warcraft" and shoot the picture after he completes work on "Spider-Man 4," which gets under way early next year for Columbia Pictures.

The movie will be financed under the Legendary Pictures' co-production and co-financing deal with WB, in a manner similar to the Todd Phillips-directed "The Hangover" plus the Roven-produced "Batman Begins" and "Dark Knight."

The "Warcraft" universe features an epic conflict between the Horde and the Alliance. The game has developed a global following since its launch in 1994 and shows no signs of slowing.
Its most recent expansion, "Wrath of the Lich King," sold more than 2.8 million copies in the first day of release and more than 4 million its first month.

"Warcraft" is "emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which our studio is best known," said Warner Bros. Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov.
The deal revives a long-dormant pact made by Legendary and Blizzard for a film adaptation of the game.

"At its core, 'Warcraft' is a fantastic, action-packed story," Raimi said in a statement.

Raimi most recently directed "Drag Me to Hell."

Roven and his Atlas producing partner Alex Gartner will produce with Legendary's CEO Thomas Tull and chief creative officer Jon Jashni, Raimi and his producing partner, Joshua Donen.
Rob Tapert will be executive producer, and Blizzard senior VP of creative development Chris Metzen will be co-producer.

on the bright side.....Uwe Boll's not directing it. I understand he's working on the live-action film adaptation of "PONG"

In fairness Warcraft has a huge amount of 'Lore' and story in coming all the old RTS games as well as WOW.

World of Warcraft: the Movie?

Getting away from some serial killers stalking teens in their own house for a bit, ive been a big fan of this game for many many years and its company, Blizzard Entertainment, produces some of the best games ive ever played with the most intricate and interesting story lines you could imagine.

Heres an article about this upcoming movie:
The film was originally set in the era of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. This was scrapped, however, as there were notions that it would be too similar to Lord of the Rings and that Warcraft had reached its current level of popularity through its MMORPG, rather than the previous RTS games.[1]

As such, the movie is set one year before World of Warcraft and will primarily told from the Alliance's point of view, though Metzen says his heart lies with the Horde. Characters such as Cairne Bloodhoof, Thrall, Sylvanas Windrunner, and Bolvar Fordragon are likely to make appearances. Arthas is unlikely to appear.[1] At BlizzCon 2007, Chris Metzen said that the main character is set to be a new hero described as a "kick-ass Human" and an "Anti-Thrall".[2][3] This new character in the movie is not same one as in the comic (now known to be Varian Wrynn).[4]

Metzen also stated clearly that lore would be bent for the sake of the film, Varian Wrynn might have a twin.[citation needed]

Interestingly enough, the film is described as the "first film", raising obvious possibilities as to future installments.[citation needed]

Concept art of Teldrassil was released in relation to the film, hinting that at least some of the film takes place there, and perhaps by extension, in Darnassus.

In a May 9, 2006 press release, Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures (makers of Batman Begins and 300) announced that they will develop a live-action film set in the Warcraft universe. Legendary Pictures has acquired the movie rights for the game universe, and both companies are now focused on translating the Warcraft experience to the big screen. Read more about it in the press release.[6]

The live-action film was set for release in 2009,[7] but is not likely to make release in 2009 based on quotes from Blizzard president Mike Morhaime.[8]

On July 22, 2009, Blizzard Entertainment announced that Sam Raimi would become the Warcraft movie director. Sam Raimi is the famed director for the blockbuster series, Spider-Man, and has generated 5 Academy Awards nominations in his career. Raimi also wrote and directed the cult classic The Evil Dead and its two sequels, and produced 30 Days of Night. He also recently wrote and directed the thriller Drag Me To Hell. In addition to film, Raimi has worked in television, producing such fantasy series as Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.[5]

Uwe Boll attempted to apply for the job of director, from which Blizzard CEO Paul Sams replied "We will not sell the movie rights, not to you…especially not to you."[9]

According to IMDB, the manuscript writer will be Chris Metzen. (Jesse Wigutow was mentioned, but has been removed).[10] IMDB information on pre-release movies should be taken as suspect, though. IMDB generally only removes false information if someone reports it.

According to Mike Morhaime, there is a draft script.[8] Chris Metzen mentioned that the film will be action-packed and violent, stating "We're definitely not going to make a G or a PG version of this. It's not PillowfightCraft."

For those that have never seen nor heard of the game (if thats possible), here is a trailer I found on YouTube. Though there is no actual footage of the movie itself online this is a brilliant fan made trailer that will show you exactly what the games about, and what you can expect from the movie. Blizzard cinematics are awesome and they plan to make this film a very warlike movie and not at all like LOTR.

Also news of a Diablo movie in the making, which is even more dark then WoW. Diablo was always my favorite game they made - its about the cosmic war between angels and demons being waged on earth where man is caught in the middle of it. Very dark story about the wanderer and the three prime evils. CANT WAIT! Been waiting for these movies a loooong time.

There are books and books worth of stuff from the RTS games isn't there? I just don't get how you can make a movie based on a game where each lead character is completely different in faction, style of play, and even what they experience.

The problem here is that the only people who will care to see this crap are the people who play WoW, right? But seeing a movie requires them to leave their computer chairs. I don't know how they think this can be profitable. Maybe if they give away free energy drinks at all screenings.
