Why the butchery?

I have a guestion that's been bugging me for a while. In this age of unrated director cut's and deleted scenes restored, why would a video company take a perfectly good example of R-rated Italian gangster splat like The Valachi Papers, cut it up and reissue it as a PG-rated movie? Restoring lost footage is laudable but intentionally losing it defies rational thought. Why the butchery? Any ideas?

I guess it depends on the source material they use. If they're using the print that was used on the VHS version or the US version, chances are it will be heavily cut. I've been waiting a long time to get a restored version of Capone (1975) starring Ben Gazzara, which contains a massive amount of violence. Caligula languished for 15 odd years in an "R" rated version. Sometimes good prints just aren't around. A lot of the "Something Weird" catalogue is in less-than-pristine condition. But at least it's there.

Sometimes it's cut for content. Pretty Baby is a heavily edited DVD, because it's borderline kiddy porn. Sometimes there's no demand. El Topo just made it to the market a few years ago. I hadn't heard a word about Jodorowski in a long time till that happened. A lot of variables come into play.

The way the DVD market is determined really sucks. One reason that VHS really had an edge was variety and availability. Now, you take what you can get.

What?!...I LOVE butchery!

*Actually reads thread*...Ooooh...THAT kind...Well...Umm...That kind sux...Yeah, so...Nevermind:o

I'd say that it's done to reach as many audiences as possible...Catering to different age groups/personal preferences...As Illdojo said, it's all about making money.
