God of War - The Movie

May 29, 2008

Brett Ratner, director of the Rush Hour franchise and X-Men: The Last Stand, is a busy guy. A report was passed today that Ratner is in talks to make Beverly Hills Cop 4 with Eddie Murphy. He's also set to helm Playboy, the planned biopic of Hugh Hefner that may star Robert Downey Jr.

Now comes word that Ratner may be bringing the hit videogame God of War to the big screen.

In a recent interview hyping his new branding consulting company, Ratner told Ad Age that he may be adding the GoW movie to his slate. There's no further info given.

Shortly after the project was first announced back in 2005, game creator David Jaffe confirmed that writer David Self had written the script. Self wrote Road to Perdition, Thirteen Days, and is penning the screenplays for the planned Deathlok and Captain America movies.

God of War is a bloody story of vengeance, set in an ancient Greece full of mythical beings and deities. The hero of the story is a Spartan warrior named Kratos, who must carry out missions for the gods on Olympus to prevent Ares from destroying the city of Athens.

It would be Ratner's most ambitious movie project to date. But the big question is, does he have the right stuff for it?

Not sure if he's the right guy to do it, but I'd love to see God of War on screen - could make for a damn cool action movie.

A report online claims to have the early word on the screenplay for the film adaptation of the PS2 videogame God of War.

CC2K claims to have seen an early draft of the script by David Self (Road to Perdition) and says that "everything about God of War is like Clash of the Titans, only taken to the extreme and amped up to satisfy the 21st century sensibilities of males aged 15-25."

The site says Self's script "has stayed true (almost slavishly so) to the game's plot." Although most of the changes are relatively cosmetic -- satyrs and cyclops are now far taller than they're portrayed in the game -- they claim there has been one "significant" alteration made to the source material that may rankle some fans of the game.

SPOILER WARNING:

CC2K claims the end of this draft differs from that of the game, with the script ending on an "unresolved" note. "Instead of being offered (and accepting) the Godhood of War after he attempts suicide as he does in the game, in the script Kratos is offered the godhood, rejects it, and casts himself off the cliffs," the site reports. Just as Kratos is about to die, the script supposedly has him say, "Your turn, Hades...", before it cuts to black. No intervention by Athena, no trip to Mount Olympus, and no Blades of Athena.

I kind of like that change. Original is better - and that line itself is just corny as all Hell - but that's not a bad twist at all.

Still looking forward to see this one come together.
