Let The Right One In

Feb 26, 2008

Magnolia Pictures’ new genre arm, Magnet, has picked up North American rights to “Let the Right One In.”

The romantic horror pic, based on a novel by Swedish scribe John Ajvide Lindqvist, involves a boy who befriends a girl who may be a vampire.

The pic screened at the European Film Market to some mighty rave reviews. Stefanie Zeitler, Thorsten Schaumann and Bianca Schartl of Bavaria Film Intl. negotiated North American rights with Magnolia’s Tom Quinn and Jason Janego.

Magnet’s slate includes horror pic “Donkey Punch,” slasher “Murder Party,” plus thrillers “The Signal” and “Boarding Gate.”

Magnet specializes in horror, action, comedy and Asian cinema.

The book definitely wasn't a bestseller.

The Swedish vampire film, Let the Right One In (aka Låt den rätte komma in), is probably going to be one of the best foreign horror films of 2008.

It was learnt that JJ Abrams' company, Bad Robot, is making a play at the remake rights. Although the company behind Coverfield has yet to gain the rights, it looks like this is a possible home for the US version of the film.

Magnet Releasing has acquired domestic home video rights for the pic playing this year's Tribeca Film Festival.

In the film, Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire.
