Rondo Hatton - The Horror Star Who Needed No Makeup

Rondo Hatton was born an only child in Hagerstown, Maryland. His family moved to Tampa Florida where in high school he was a popular student and a good athlete.

After high school he joined the National Guard to pursue a military career. He fought in both the Mexican border war and in World War One. He was exposed to poison gas during the war and was discharged from the military with a pension.

After his exposure to the poison gas, Hatton developed acramegaly. This disease is usually caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland but in his case it was from the gas.

Acramagely is a disease that causes a slow deforming of the bones in the head, hands, feet and internal and external soft tissues.

It was thought that the divorce from his first wife was due to this disease. He married a second time and was noticed by noted director Henry King.

Most of his roles were bits and secondary but he did have some starring roles in some Universal "B" movies in which he played The Brute Man & The Creeper.

His best roles were in:

Sherlock Holmes & The Pearl Of Death (1944) as The Creeper

The Jungle Captive (1945) as Moloch

The Spider Woman Strikes Back (1946) as Mario

House Of Horrors (1946) as The Creeper

The Brute Man (1946) as The Title Character

In real life he was supposedly a very sensitive man and was reported to be very unhappy at how Hollywood exploited his unfortunate disease. He was, however, under contract and could do nothing about it.

He died in February, 1946 of a heart attack.

His acting wouldn't win an Academy Award, but his films are worth watching if you are interested in films and their history.

But even better, as a horror movie fan, he definitely is worth watching and is definitely a big part of the horror movie genre.

That's my favorite Hatton movie too with Martin Kosleck as the frustrated artist who uses The Creeper to kill his critics!

House Of Horrors is my fav. Hatton movie as well.

This thread also makes me think about Michael Berryman who also was just naturally creepy looking as well.
