How has life affected your movie watching?
Have you ever had a real life experience that had an effect on the way you view a horror film.. or any movie? Maybe it made the movie scarier or even unwatchable, or maybe the experience you had really enhanced the film for you and made it more enjoyable. I’ve known a few people who became parents and then can’t watch horror films where kids are killed. Anyway, what was your experience and how has it changed the way you perceive certain movies? Personally, I spent so much time in the woods when I was younger that horror movies set in the woods don’t really do much for me, Blair Witch was probably the biggest example here as it’s such a loved flick in the horror community and yet didn’t thrill me.

you know, as a parent I still feel the way I did before becoming a dad
kill the dog, kill the kid films are films. if they can manage to create a sense of suspense and terror in a jaded (but still willing) old bastard like me, god bless 'em

I spent some time in a wheelchair so the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reall effected me. It made me grateful to have recovered and not lost the ability to walk.

My oldest son was born a couple of years before "Pet Sematary" was made into a movie. I read the book and could not bring myself to watch the movie for a couple of years.......he would have been the same age as the kid in the movie and the subject matter would have fucked with my head too much.
so sue me.......newb has a heart. a bitty one....but its there. Last edited by newb; 09-15-2007 at 09:48 PM. |

Well the nail biting and the tenseness have certainly gone out of mine. Blame it on the daily grind and the kow-tows of office and home...I have pretty much become de-sensitized to stuff on the screen.
Another reason could be the overdose of movie-watching. (although how much ACTUALLY constitutes an overdose is debatable...probably different for different individuals) Its entertainment for me...and the awe-part/the jump-out-of-seat part have all but disappeared. I watch it for fun and enjoyment, and critical appreciation. You gotta love childhood eh?;)

Not a big one, but since my friends and I started making little movies I've actually payed attention to writing and direction instead of just saying "Wow, that was pretty cool" or "That was funny".

It has affected me completely.
I used to be a hard core horror nut, then I had kids. I have to limit my viewing because of lack of time and lack of good babysitters but also because I have developed a true aversion to any child being harmed or killed on film. Example-I LOVED Dracula with Gary Oldman, I can't watch it now. |

More than Horror movies I find that other movies draw in comparison with my real life experiences... Blue sunshine scared the shit out of me, probably due to how much acid I did when I was younger.......
But other than that, none I can think of.

Being a Undertaker ive seen a lot of shit in my time. Ive lost count of the amount of suicides ive been to , dead druggies ect.
So when i see a film with corpses in , i know how they smell. So i guess my life has affected my movie watching.
