sub categories?

 this may seem like a silly question but does the site have an official list of sub-categories within the horror genre? if so i'd be interested to hear it, if not perhaps one of you could give me an expert opinion on this. iincluding a shortlist of the movies that fall into none of the above. it seems that nobody is quite sure where certain movies fall eg. alien, jacobs ladder, the passion...

Might be an idea. Although taxonomy is usually the first step towards bloodshed and somebody going home crying, it might serve us in recommending things. As might a glossary thread. There are a lot of people just coming on who don't know what giallo or schauerfilm are and it would be a pretty good service to them I think.

Alien = Sci-Fi Horror
The Passion = Religious Horror
Jacob's Ladder = Surreal Horror? Drama/Horror?

I don't know about this one, not sure how I'd catagorize it. I personally don't think we need to catagorize everything but I can see if you're looking for similar movies...

Tony, I wouldn't spend too much time trying to categorize these movies. People often argue that Alien isn't even a horror movie because of its sci-fi elements, yet others often list as one of (if not THE) scariest movie of all time. So who's right? Who cares! It is a great movie.

The Passion is another that certainly can be viewed a few different ways. Devout Christians would consider it first and foremost a history. Atheists would say it is a fantasy. Certainly, many horror fans consider it to be a sadistic gore film. Who's right? Who cares!

:p

I agree with Unaboner. It is too hard to catergorize movies as there are so many differing opinions. There are too many movies that also cross sub genres of horror as well. TCM can be considered an explotation film, the grand father of teen slashers, cannibal movie, and so on.

i don't want to over analyse it and get too geeky but this is the place for technical questions. i know that we all have our own reasons for visiting this site, ranging from antagonism to light hearted chit chat. my reason is almost totally educational. yeah, there's some good craic, but there are a lot of people on here who have forgotten more about horror than i'll ever know. so, if someone wants to have a go at sub categorising the entire genre just for fun it could be thought provoking. for instance, despare mentioned religious/horror. thats a first for me. having said that, i'd not only watched several argentos but actually visited the dario argento horror museum in rome before i'd even heard the term 'giallo'.

Ok, tony. I'll play. Let me through out some common sub-genres of horror:
  • Flesh Eaters (which can be broken into 2 groups)
    • Cannibals
    • Zombies
  • Exploitation
  • Erotic Horror
  • Gore/Extreme/Splatter (so many names, but you know the type of film)
  • Gothic Horror
  • Psychological Horror
  • Sci-fi Horror
  • Slasher (most of the movies that have more than 5 sequels fit here)
  • Supernatural (lets break this one down even further)
    • Ghosts
    • Demonic
    • Monsters
    • Witches/Warlocks
    • Vampires
  • Vomit Horror (yuck!)

Ok.....this could quickly become a friggin' doctoral dissertation, so I will quit now. I'm sure others can add to this. :)

I don't know oldboy or shogun assassin so others will have to comment ont hose. For erotic horror, there quite a few of these films out. I, personally, am not into this kinda stuff, but if you are: here
