Lost Tomb of Jesus
I couldn't get the search function to work so I looked around and couldn't find another topic on this. Regardless, I'm sure some ass will post something "you didn't look hard enough" followed by some mystery link out of the internet ether.
anyway. did anyone else see this? what about the discussion afterwards with Ted Koppel? if you did, please weigh in with your opinion. if you haven't seen it, you can go here to check it out and see what all the fuss is about.

I watched this and found much of the proof very compelling. I was really pissed that they showed it once then there were over 7 listings for encore showings on Discovery and Discovery Times, but they never did show it again. I don't know if it was from pressure or what.
I really failed to understand why people were so freaked about this. As someone who always questioned whether there really was a person named Jesus, I found it more a matter of confirmation that he really had existed. The only ones I can see that would have to even make a firm change of dogma are the Catholics because of the entire celibacy of the priesthood issue. Even though it is well recorded that it was more because the church was losing vast land holdings to inheritance. Hell, popes were all married until Nicea. I'd think that for a person with faith, to find the Jesus was married, had children, and left some physical remains on Earth shouldn't change anything. It doesn't rule out in any way his divinity. The arguments surrounding this and the reasons behind them outline everything I hate about organized religion. People are more determined to hold onto something that a bunch of church elders teach as the only way it could possibly be than to get a deeper understanding and more information regarding their deity on Earth. People really need to separate faith and religion more.

It could very well invalidate the most sacred belief of MILLIONS of people. Christianity is founded on the idea that Jesus ben-Joseph was the son of God and, as such, was persecuted, crucified and ROSE FROM THE DEAD. It's a big deal. Most people do like like to have their beliefs called into question. The reasonable one don't like it and the unreasonable ones wish death on anyone who would oppose them. Now, I'm not a dyed-in-the-wool believer, and I honestly don't care either way. That said, the "proof" was anything but, and the science was weak. I'd love to see hard academic proof on the subject, but I found little in the special. |

No, no, please don't misunderstand. My whole point was why would it change the belief that he rose from the dead. He certainly could have done so then his soul or divine spark, however you want to word it (I don't want to lose the expression of the point on terminology) certainly could have risen to heaven. It just seems that the flesh ascending is more a matter of dogma than the thing that made him divine. I'm truly not trying to insult anyone or offend their beliefs. I just really don't understand why this would challenge Jesus' divinity. I'd also have to say that anyone who wishes to kill people because they don't agree with them on religious matters are not Christians. They may be true believers in something (dogma, false prophets, themselves), but not in Jesus and what he taught. Sadly, that's the case more often than not. Otherwise it's difficult to justify alot of actions carried out in the name of a pacifist who preached none shall judge except in heaven, love your neighbor as yourself, made points of showing kindness and understanding to lepers and prostitutes, and turn the other cheek. Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord...anyone who's not him and is putting themselves up as judge, is in for a bit of vengeance themselves.

I'm far from offended and I love the religious threads. A good solid theological debate is good for the soul - even if you don't really believe in the soul.
I love that people care. Caring is a wonderful thing. |

sorry if this offends but, surely if there was ground breaking new evidence in an area of international significance then it would be on the bbc and cnn rather that discovery. i heard about that 9/11 conspiracy theory documentary, where they try to convince us that the twin towers were brought down by demolition charges etc, etc. conspiracies are fun but, but unless they arrive in the form of 'breaking news' i'm very sceptical. with the exception of pyramids, they are of alien construction.lol
