Okay... there are thousands of original ideas out there, but no one knows how much money an original film (let alone an original horror film) will make. There is a reasonable idea of what a sequel, or remake can bring in, so most investors (and don't kid yourself, investors dictate what you see be it Indie or Studio) choose to do the safe thing when presented with a choice.
There will always be more poorly made films than well made films. There will always be remakes and sequels. And there will always be a couple of new things that slip through the cracks and the freaks like US keep alive, like Slither and Feast and The Descent.
