Mother Hangs Her 2 Babies Then Herself

A mother said to have been tormented by loneliness in her new home has hanged her two baby sons - and then killed herself.

Horrified husband Shuhel Miah, 27, found their bodies when he returned to the flat after work.

Police later led him away from the house, clutching a baby's blanket. Neighbours yesterday said wife Massammat Mumtahana, who moved into the home with Shuhel, two-year-old Raheem and a year-old baby a few months ago, was recently seen sobbing in the street.

And they reported hearing angry rows between 22-year-old Massammat, who wore traditional Asian clothing and spoke little English, and her more Westernised husband.

Bernard Bates, who lived next door to the family in Radnor Road, Handsworth, Birmingham, said: "She didn't go out much and didn't seem to have any friends or relatives. I can't remember a single visitor to the house. I think she felt quite isolated.

"The husband often worked late. I used to speak to him and he was very polite. A real gentleman. I didn't say anything to his wife because she didn't speak much English. I'd sometimes hear them row, but no more than most couples of their age.

"Perhaps she snapped under the pressure of being on her own and looking after two babies.

"It is such a shock - a tragedy. They were lovely little boys."
Bernard, 60, saw Shuhel arrive home in his car on Wednesday evening: He added: "Ten minutes later, I heard police sirens. When I looked he was standing outside holding a small blanket. He looked distraught."

"Another neighbour added: "I heard screams about two weeks ago from the house. I had seen the woman crying in the street. She went off with someone who I presumed was a friend."

Police yesterday sealed off the semi-detached house, which is divided into flats, as a forensic examination took place.
