I know...
... you kids hate it when people do this but, I recently moved and I have become obsessed with this local legend about the bell witch, and was curious about An American Haunting seeing how the movie is supposely based on this story. any comments for an old friend?

Yeah, I saw it, you crazy culinary artist. Save yer money! I didn't think it was awful just because it was inaccurate to the supposed events of the Bell Witch story. I thought it was awful because it didn't make any freaking sense and played more like a music video--a lot of loud noises and the occasional digital effect, and ultimately that's all it is. A lot of flash and no substance, none whatsoever. Take that money and buy yourself a nice sandwich or maybe a cool carbonated soft drink with ice in it.

I fell asleep in the theatre(I'm not saying it was boring, I was just too damn tired.) so I don't remember much about it except that it's a fact that it's based on the bell witch story/incident. Not sure about how close or loose the movie is to the story because I'd never heard of the bell witch until the movie came about. The friends that I was with said it was a sub-par flick.

The period costumes are good--not a large cast, so maybe that's not a tremendous accomplishment, but the costumes are good. The ghosty sound effects are pretty good too--there's just a lot more of that than the film needs, and you're pretty much hearing weird stuff all through the movie.
But man, when you see an obvious "morph" in a movie that's supposed to depict events happening in 1817, it looks pretty damn strange and it tends to pull you out of the period atmosphere everyone's spent so much time and money trying to put you in. Plus the film is influenced by the glut of eerie "ghost girls" popularized by recent creepy Japanese movies and their remakes. Uninspired and meandering, at the end it tries to baffle us with some mysterious bullshit to obscure the fact that it basically has no story.

Ohhhh. Well actually, I think you might want to read some webpages about the Bell Witch. I'm sure the story has been dressed up and altered a lot over the years, so I imagine it's basically impossible to know what really happened if anything. But the accounts are pretty fascinating.

Ugh, I took my girlfriend to see this film when it was first released. Luckily we had been dating for awhile, otherwise she'd have dumped me. That movie was slow, boring and nothing a good film should be. Save your change and go see something that's rated 'R'.
