xbox - PS2 - game cube ?????

If i was to get a decent system ...used .. for around $100 ..

what would it be ?
I see them used everywhere ..but i have no idea whats what.

here's the criteria i'm looking for :

ideally - will play burned games

as far as games go .. my son loves pokemon .. i know only nintendo systems have pokemon games .. or is that true ?

if i play anything .. its horror themed 1st person shooters (a la Quake ..)

we currently have a sega genesis, nintendo 64, sony playstation.
(all bought used - cheap)
my kid enjoyes the games on those ..

especially pokemon snap and toy story 2 (thanks newb !) on the nintendo, and he likes Rayman, and Spyro on Playstation.

anyone have any recommendations on systems and games that would suit our needs ?

Only Gamecube has pokemon and while it does have a LOT of kid friendly games it will have some great games for you too like Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness, and maybe even Killer 7. None of the systems will play burned games unless you put mod chips in them and even then the Gamecube is the least pirate friendly system.

I'm not sure about burnt games on any of the systems. Gamecube would probabaly be your best bet for the type of games you want, as well as the cheapest.

Resident Evil 4 is excellent.

I got pissed off buying games at £40 a time for my kids who got bored of them as soon as the game gota bit difficult. so i went & got a chipped xbox which you can also save games to the hard drive. my kids have also got a PS2 you can get them really cheap & get games for less than £5.

Urg...these are just things I've heard...not really followed up on.

PS2 can be externally modified with some kind of hard-drive type device...I'd have to fine out more info to get more...although, it looks like one of the more expensive modifications on offer, however...it won't damage your machine.

Gamecube is reputedly the easiest to get to play burned games (assuming you have a source you can get them from), all you need to do is find something that fits the "star key" lock on the side of the machine, and remove the top half. there are some alternative covers custom built to be refitted over the console available through various users on ebay, theyre basically the same thing, with room enough to play full cds/dvds.
No modification of the hardware though, apparrently nintendo assumed that removing the top would seem an impossible task.
To me, this would be the best idea for you.
Here, I can get a gamecube brand new at Electronics Boutique for $100AUD, which I'll assume is less in canadian bucks, and since you won't damage your machine with any kinda modding, it'll last longer.
Cheaper machine, no internal mods required, fairly decent range of games (including some GOOD horror and fps titles), graphically excellent, and yeah, the pokemon stuff only comes out through nintendo as far as I know.

But hey, if you manage to make either of the abovementioned actually WORK, I'd be interested in knowing how it went.

Being deathly afraid of the law, I know nothing as far as burned games go. However for the rest of your critera, I have to agree with everyone else: Gamecube is your answer. Great games for all ages, and easily the cheapest console. I have both GC and PS2, and for my purposes GC is far better.

If you go to a game store you'll be able to find cheap, used games.

EB Games/Electronics Boutique/Game Stop
Game Traders

Those are the ones I'm familiar with, I believe the first three mentioned have Canadian franchises. Obviously I have no idea how close they'd be to you but there's gotta be some place similar in your area.

You can also trade in your games when you're done with 'em, you don't usually get much unless it's fairly new but you're finished with it and it's gonna shave a few bucks off your next purchase, so why not.
