Movie Discussion.

Take this for what it's worth but ....

If there is any one thing that drags any film forum into the mud it is the immature posts such at 'it sucks' or 'it was boring' with no explaination.

It just leads to bickering back and forth and besides that it just looks juvenile and devoid of any thought or intelligence.

If that's the way you want to be percieved - then stop reading now - words can't do much about that. A troll is a troll.

Personally i believe that if you have a strong statement to make, back it up. If you dont like something - articulate why. If you can't do it intelligently - why would you want people to know that ?

I'm very much interested in other peoples views - i have learned to see certain things under a different light when someone is ellequent and heartfelt enough to give a decent critique.

All i get from 'IT SUCKS' is that the person or their opinions really don't count for shit and their posts arent worth the time to read them.

I also hate 'it was boring' without somekind of explaination.

Boring why ? because you didnt understand it .. and/or you are suffering from ADD ? You have a problem with character developement and careful pacing ?

I would find a symposium on genetic engineering boring because i dont have the background or education thus the intellectual capacity to appreciate it.

If you dont quantify why you found it boring then i'll asume you fit into one of the catagories above.

I know that for the most part this little sermon is either preaching to the choir - or falling on deaf ears.

I'm just hoping to catch the people in between.

This is a public forum where people come to discuss films etc. If you cant contribute anything of worth, why bother ?
For the reaction ? That would be pretty sad, shallow, and pathetic, no ?

People have always commented on the 'good posters' and they are always the ones that contribute something solid.
I like the good posters .. they are worth reading- even if i dont agree with their views ..

for a couple of examples .. Bwind is doing the ideal kind of review .. as is Rubenmania .. and some others ..
The people who take the time to explain their views .. not just go for the cheap badboy bullshit..

again .. i may be completely alone in this ...

Every forum is plagued by reviews like you were talking about. "This was the worst movie i've ever seen". I've heard that used for so many fucking movies, some of which I even like. Its VERY difficult to get accurate movie reviews online. Its either a 14 year old kid who is like "this movie was garbage. everything sucked.", or some guy who might as well be writing a college paper on the film. I personally don't like either although the latter mentioned is tolerable.

I haven't really seen either of those here (its all over amazon and imdb), which is why I'm sticking around. You people seem to know your stuff. I wish there was a board for discussion of non-horror movies, but oh well.

i dont mind the college paper if the person actually has a clue ..

as far as non horror related - i guess it could be in general ...

i find that at least 1/4 of the films discussed here aren't horror - probably more than that.

Most horror boards encompass any form of 'exploitation' film .. and sci-fi ...
so that includes action films .. any kind of violence at all really.
(makes you think doesn't it ?)

outside of that .. yeah .. not too much.

I constantly expound the virtues of My Fair Lady but no one likes musicals here.. :(

Not true - I like musicals! But, it seems like all you and I talk about are horror movies. There's a few other genres that I like besides horror - A&A, Thriller, Comedy, Classics, etc.

Having said that, I'll admit I've never seen My Fair Lady - not a conscious choice, I've just never gotten around to it. There's a lot of "classic" movies that I haven't seen. Again, not a conscious choice, just haven't gotten to them yet.

Any other musicals besides My Fair Lady that you'd recommend?

I am brief in my own descriptions because basically- I don't think anybody really gives a rat ass what I think about a movie anyway, and will watch it or not watch it based on their own opinion.
Actually, now that I think of it,I wonder why I started saying anything again about the movies I watch*shrugs*.
And since obviously I have nothing to offer -I'll promptly stop.

I didn't rent Oldboy because of any in-depth discussion about it ,I just remember it being mentioned alot and ppl saying it was good-I had no idea what the story was about....turns out-it was really great.
I will rent a movie mentioned often enough in here even if it's called the worst movie ever-mainly out of curiousity.

i dont think you ever say "that sucks" and leave it at that ?

I think you should be encouraged to write more - not stop.
I give a big unwashed smelly rats ass about anyone's opinion on a movie..

nothing new .. just the old classics ..

oklahoma, sound of music, the king and I ... the old rogers and hammerstein musicals were pretty good .. light fare but usually funny with great dialogue and more than just one recognizable tune ..

you start watching these old musicals and you hear songs that you know but had no idea they came from a movie .. happens all the time.

but you REALLY have to see My Fair Lady ! Rex Harrison is a gem in it..

i bought it because of the discussions here :)
same with Dead Birds ... there are a number of titles i have no exposure to until someone mentions them here ...

one of the other basic niceties is : not saying IT SUCKED and quantifying it - right after someone said how much they liked it and why ..

its just like a shit stain on the carpet ...offensive, no value at all, and it stinks.

I have been thinking about putting Dead Birds on the netflix queue.
-it's funny because it popped up in my recommendations months ago and I never thought twice about it until I kept seeing it mentioned in here.
