Guinea Pig On The Menu?

Guinea Pig Found In Restaurant Freezer

Georgia - A DeKalb County health inspector found a frozen guinea pig tucked in a freezer at La Sabrosa restaurant, 2857 Buford Highway. According to the inspector's report, the chef said the guinea pig was for his personal consumption, but he could not remember where he bought it or produce a receipt.

Inspector Karen Nguyen noted that she "advised operators to keep receipts for all purchases. Any food used for personal consumption must be stored separate and labeled 'personal foods.' "

The restaurant scored an 87 on the December inspection, up from its previous 79.

An Internet search reveals that, yes indeed, there are several recipes for guinea pig, typically deep-fried or roasted, with a taste similar to rabbit. Some sites say that the dish was an Incan delicacy. One recipe noted that it should be served with a salad and beer.

Janice Buchanon, the director of DeKalb's food protection program, said later that the restaurant owner had to throw out the guinea pig.

"This is not something we run into often," Buchanon said.

I worked in catering for 5 years and this is not completely far-fetched. People eat weird shit all the time. We had an annual party of game hunters that came in and we'd prepare their hunted kills for them. Those guys eat some crazy shit... Sheep and Bull testicles were real popular. Then of course they like the more normal stuff liek alligator, rabbit, and elk too, but the absolute WORST thing they would eat was roasted raccoon! Talk about fuckin' sick! Every time I'd have to clean one, it reminded me of a skinned dog carcass and could almost induce vomitting on sight.

I think it has a lot to do with the area you live in...

I know a lot of people in Texas who eat these...They call them 'mountain oysters'...I wouldn't touch them myself...Yuck

It is HIGHLY illegal to kill a raccoon here, much less eat one...But, rabbit, turtle, and frog legs are really common here...I grew up eating them...A little further south in Kentucky, many people eat squirrels (especially squirrel brains), but I haven't
