What's really scary anymore?

Lately I've been finding a lot of the things that were frightening to me when I was young and rewatching them. The original Chainsaw, Last House On the Left, that screwed up X-files with the inbreeders, etc etc. and none of it seems remotely as shocking or disturbing as I remember it. That's to be expected I guess, I'm older and many of the things that were unthinkable back in the day are cliches now. My girlfriend upon watching Chainsaw after I built it up as the scariest mainstream movie I could think of was unimpressed. She said it reminded her of House of 1000 Corpses. Thanks Rob.
So anyway I guess what I want to hear is suggestions of things that will give me that same feeling I had when I was 12 and was more scared of monsters and psychos than power mad politicians and religious fanatics. Any suggestions?

I dunno, to me, possesion scare sthe eveliving shit out of me. (The Exorcist, Amityville 2, Evil Dead). It just really digs deep for me. on the other hand, I'm only 16, so I can't relate as well to the "When I was 12..." thing.

I agree, not much scares me anymore.

Prince of darkness gave me wierd lil feeling after i watched it, but that was when i was 14. I still think its a really interesting, unsettling movie. While others might disagree, i dunno - movies work differently on different people.

Black christmas also bugged me out. You would think its a typical slasher blah blah, but i dunno - it was very eerie and slow paced. Definitly a good movie to watch late at night.

Maniac will be the movie that I forever will remember as scaring me to the core

Jacobs Ladder will forever be the movie that I cannot ever watch again as long as I live if I want to remain sane(well-relatively)

Excorcist makes all the demons possessing me very nervous,so yet another movie I should not watch.I will not even attempt to watch this new one"emily rose"thingy...nope,not for me

So,maybe you need to find out what you fear and then concentrate on watching those-from the classics to the new.

Jacobs Ladder is one of those movies I keep intending to see but always forget when I'm trying to think of something to rent. Thanks for the suggestion.
I should be clear I guess by what I mean. I've seen many films that have seriously scared me. Dancer in the Dark with Bjork is one of the most screwed up things I've ever seen. But it's hardly "horror". And I'm still working up the fortitude to find a copy of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer because I know it'll leave a bad taste for weeks.
Possesion seems to scare a lot of people. I've never focused on it myself but I understand the sentiment. The thing I always loved about the Evil Dead films is how Ash accepts the situation and then does everything to survive. In Evil Dead II when he's being chased through the house and crawls inside the wall to escape.... that's intense.

Movies don't scare me so much anymore, though it is ridiculously easy to make me jump...lol....but obviously that is different kind of thing. On occasion a film can still make me uneasy. But for me, the movies that impacted me the most when I was younger and filled me with that complete sense of dread that I think you are speaking of, still do to a lesser extent. But, for instance, the original TCM and The Exorcist both still disturb the hell out of me.

And Jacob's Ladder is an excellent film.

When I was little the intro to Tales from the Crypt scared the hell outta me... I just never liked that Crypt Keeper.

The first Child's Play got to me too... maybe its just the whole puppet thing in general, I just didn't like it.
