Burned Woman Wants Husband Home

Aledo, Illinois -- Tanya Jones today took the stand at a pre-trial hearing and told the judge she wants the man accused of dousing her with gasoline and setting her on fire, out of jail and back at home. Jones testified on behalf of her husband Kristopher ''Bo'' Jones this morning in an attempt to get his $1.2 million bond reduced and the rules prohibiting contact with him changed.

Jones, her face disfigured and scarred by burns, held her breathing tube to trap the air so she could speak, smiled at her husband and calmly told the judge ''I'd like him home with me. Emotionally, it's been difficult for my children. They miss their father, and I miss my husband.'' When asked if she had any fear of him, she replied ''none at all.''

Bo Jones was charged last year with heinous battery, a class X felony, accused of taking his wife to a Mercer County field, dousing her with gasoline, and setting her on fire in a fit of rage. Tanya at one point was only given about a ten percent chance of surviving the critical burns, but pulled through after extensive treatment in the burn unit in Iowa City and now lives with her children at the home of her husband's sister.

Months ago, the first sign of a change of heart was when Tanya appeared at a fundraiser at a local church held by her husband's family to raise money for Tanya's medical bills and Bo's legal defense fund.

Today, Judge James Conway listened to Tanya's testimony, and later agreed to allow supervised visits between the couple at the Mercer County jail, monitored by a deputy, to prevent any ''room for witness tampering.'' The judge also allowed Tanya to write Bo letters, but not the other way around, and the letters will be screened by the States Attorneys office. Prosecutors had fought lifting the no contact order.

''Our concern is he could attempt to influence her testimony, make false promises,'' said Special Prosecutor Steve Plazibat. ''Our duty is to ensure the victim's safety.''

The judge also reduced Jones' bond from $1.2 million to $1 million. That means he would have to post $100, 000 cash to get out of jail. Defense Attorney Doug Scovill had asked the judge to lower his bond to $500,000.

Despite the fact that Tanya Jones is now standing by her man, prosecutors say their criminal case is still intact, the evidence strong, likely relying on testimony from emergency personnel who remember the strong smell of gasoline on Tanya the day of the burning and taped statements made by Tanya herself afterward. A trial date hasn't been set, there's still a chance a plea agreement may be reached.

At a hearing back in September, Tanya made her first trip to the Mercer County courthouse in support of her husband. At that time, Tanya's brother Travis Cole said his sister was ready to take Bo back. ''Her wishes are for him to get out as soon as possible and for them to be together when he gets out. Right now, she's still in a state of shock, I think she feels she might not be able to get anyone else because of the way she looks.''

A status hearing on the case is set for next month.
