music permission

Does anyone here have any experience with getting proper legal permission to use copywrited songs? I've always used all original music, but this time through there are some songs that I would like to use. So I'm trying to figure out the proper channels to do so, so everything thing is 100% legit.

Depends who or where you're trying to get it from. If it's some unsigned band you heard on mp3.com or such, you can likely get it for nothing more than a screen credit and a copy of the finished film since any publicity for them is good as well (that's how I got into the indie horror films myself).
If you're trying to get 'Let It Be' from The Beatles or such, I wish you a lot of luck and a lot of money. Licensing works is very expensive.

Yeah that much I actually already did, with smaller bands and such. but I'm curious about some shit on major lables. Even if I don't use them I'm curious of the process of doing so.

I know I once referred to a 'Dummy's Guide To Music Business' or such at the library a few months ago on a similar topic. You can check HERE to answer your question a little more in depth of the whole process. Again, it will cost you a bundle so good luck.
