In the Uk a few years ago there was a story of how a young boy (Jamie Bulger) was kidnapped, tortured and killed by two "innocent little angels who would't hurt a fly" in 1993.
At around the same time the British Broadcast Corporation had scheduled the original Friday the 13th and childs' play to be shown on terrestrial tv. But because of this and similar crimes (the British cenorship committe) had said that it was because of horror films that made the two children commit the act) the bbc the said they would be not showing the film.

However they (and other british terrestrial tv channels) have shown Friday 13th part 6 Jason Lives, Jason takes Manhattan, Halloween1, 3,4 & H20, Alien series All except AVP obviously, predator series, Nightmare on Elm Street series. and countless numbers of "bad" films.

My point (and there is one) is who decides what is bad and not bad, what is the difference between halloween and Friday the 13th - more gore perhaps?, then is not part 6 more gorier. is not the sight of an alien escaping from a mans stomach and then through his chest (while the man is still alive) more yuck.

and whats to stop the children from watching those nasty films on vhs or now dvd. Are all our children going to turn into psychos? do not think so -I do not have a criminal record or have I been arrested (or at least not been caught) - I saw Friday the 13th when I was 12 on vhs and the burning - uncut, spit on your grave - uncut, cannibal ferox - uncut, zombie flesh eaters & holocaust, night of the demon (big foot) and many others etc of the 70/80's in fact the first adult horror I saw at the pictures was Friday the 13th - the Final Chapter alongside Funhouse and then I was 16, I can't even tell you what the first film I saw was when I became 18!

And another thing (while I'm on the subject - sort of) a girl friend had a small child (10 years) and the girlfriend (the adult remember) wouldn't take her daughter to see Jurrasic Park at the cinema (because it was too scary), after which she settled down to watch The silence of the lambs (with child ) on tv?

Did I miss something somewhere? I thought Silence.. perhaps not scary but was certainly a lot more disturbing than a bunch of computerised/digitized dinos.

jeez.

Perhaps it's something to do with the fact that as I am fully aware that "it's only a movie" and not real life... oh god! that's why murderers and sickos are around .... because unlike the majority of the population they think Jason and Michael Myers are real and telling them to do it (even though both don't speak in any film!)

Maybe it simply because they are just out of their minds.
(Jack the Ripper killed 5 (maybe more) people in 1888 , the first cinema audience was in 1895 in a lumiere picture - the man on the moon?).

The BBFC have guidelines that they follow, the director of the BBFC has a lot of say (hence the banning of nunchukas under the previous regime...sorry, had a few too many beers to remember his name) but media (daily mail) pressure also plays a big part as the voice of the morality of the nation.

James Ferman...that's the fucker. Even after his death though his legacy lives on. Notice how many "objectionable films" have been passed since his reign (first thing that happened was "The Excorcist" finally got a video release!) which might be considered a good thing but thanks to our notoriously draconian cencorship history under Ferman they are all submitted "pre-cut" to reduce the risk of having to resubmitting and thereby increasing the expense to small distributors.

Hence the "top worst gore movies" on Sky showed scenes on mainstream telly that had been cut from the commercial releases.
