Acetyl choline (ACh) is the nerve transmitter substance released by motor neurones (at a site called the neuromuscular junction) to stimulate muscle contraction. The muscles relax (stops contracting) when the ACh is removed from the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) by the action of acetylcholinesterase. By inhibiting the cholinesterase the bug can no longer break down ACh in the NMJ and so its muscles lock up in a state of tetany (continuous contraction) making flying and respiration impossible. The South American indians used a similar approach to kill animals for food using poison-tipped blow-darts. They discovered the natural chemical curare which blocks the sites on the muscles where ACh usually locks on to activate muscle contraction. Because the ACh cannot activate the muscle the individual becomes paralysed and can then easily be trapped and butchered. The toxin poses no threat to the people who eat the food because it is denatured (detroyed) by cooking and digestion. Anaesthetists still use the same class of agents today (drugs including tubocurarine, atrocurium, cis-atrocurium and pancuronium) to paralyse patients during surgery. |

Well...thanks for the info there, man...I feel mean when spraying.
I hate even hurting things, I wish I could just like spray something that made 'em wanna leave. Ah well. Cats: I don't HATE them, but I don't feel they value interspecies friendship as much as a dog (the main household pet comparison), and they definately show less affection. A cat will be content with your company, but will seem more distant and less attentive. You cannot train them very well, either, and they tend to disrespect your property. I think the main reason people like them is the entertainment value. Dogs rule. That is all. |

Maybe if you're not cat person, they do seem aloof.
But I know my cat adores me-he brings dead animals all the time. He can be anywhere, but the minute I feel sad-he's there-on my lap...almost like he has ESP Neil Gaiman wrote this story about a cat that came to live with him and defended his house from the devil.Night after night this cat got torn to shreds, but stayed and protected the family even though the fight was killing it. |

Hey zwoti...it was only really a discussion - on my part anyways. ;)
For the record, I wasn't attempting to start anything, and I am disspointed that the question couldn't be answered. NM though I for one, am all done. Novakru...Geiman is very close to genius, I love his stuff. You should look at a few of his comics...they're on another level. With the cat thing, no, I'm not a cat person, I'm VERY much a dog person, but I DO "like" my cat. They do have their good points, I just find more in a dog. I suppose after having my german shepherd literally save my life as a child, from one of the deadliest creatures on this earth, I'm kinda biased. |

I know all about Gaiman-I have the entire Sandman collection(except a few that I lost)
I have a few of the Black Orchid series and hope to have them this Christmas(hint-hint Santa Claus) I have a limted edition of several graphic novels he and McKean did. Just about all the books although I haven't picked up Anansi Boys yet. I think my life would be complete if he and McKean would do another comic book series.....of ANYTHING:D *I love dogs too,and now that I am alone so much now,I really, really wish I could have kept puppy. My best friends growing up were dogs. |

Puppies take a lot of time sometimes...but less and less effort required as time goes by. Maybe you could adopt a dog from this "humane society" I've heard about over there?
We have something like that here, with dogs of all ages, so if yours is the same, maybe you ould pick one up that's past the "difficult" stage?..although I always kinda get teary when I go in and see so many ditched animals, most looking confused, missing their families...you always know that the one you walked away with really needs a home. As for Geimans comics, I'm currently reading "Mr Hero - The Newmatic man", it's very funny...the guy really has some unique titles going on. Can't wait for mirrormask. |
