Isn't it just a rehash of basically the same plotline, with different kills each time?

4 looked totally repetitive. I d say its beyond the saturation point.

sure it is ... its basically Friday the 13th for the 2000's

a slight lean to the grindhouse sensibility - but basically the same thing :

repetition, comfortable familiarity ... and young fans happy to support a new franchise.

Yep, complete with cheers for each kill.

They keep trying to "twist" things but regardless of your feelings on the storyline at least it's a hard R horror flick raking in cash still. :)

True.

Doesn't mean I d like it. I thought the first one was overdone, and the rest followed suit. It started off pretty interestingly, but 2 and 3 were real eyerollers.

I d rather watch Tim Burton snap off heads in Sleepy Hollow.

Based on a book, yes, but awesome movie...also, doesn't have Sleepy Hollow 2, 3, 4 etc. etc. after it too. ;)

For sure but I'm not touting the merits of any particular movie or series here. Saw could have been much worse but if it made a ton of cash and stayed a hard R it still would serve as a beacon of hope to those who like their horror R (or worse). Personally I wouldn't care if rated R horror was released less and less to the theaters as a lot of the films I enjoy really didn't get a proper mainstream theater release anyway. I do think that dismissing any horror film simply because of the rating is short sighted and ignorant.

Totally agree.

Look what happened to Grindhouse at the BO. Doesn't deter it from my Top 10 post-2000 one bit.

The one thing which makes PG 13 sell is the pre- and post- teen audience. They are the target groups. And studios are smart about knowing EXACTLY where to rake the moolah in from.

A movie doesn't fare by its quality anymore. It's just a dish now - the more attractive the dish, the more chances it has of getting lapped up.

pg-13 is a subtle way of knowing accessibility over content. there are exceptions where the plot can overshadow and chill. there are the classics like i noted before. hell, you can even be surprised from time to time with a good horror flick, like some of you mentioned that didn't even pop in my mind.

rated r still says horror to me.
