I remember hearing something about how TCM was based on a true story right out of Texas...never knew the details just figured after the movie came out it became a post movie Urban Legand.. Im sure everyone has heard a version of "oh yea that was true I heard it from so and so who heard it from yada yada" and so on and so forth... Alot of hollywood movies have "post" movie Urban Legands....People get too board with it just being a movie and have to add a "TRUE STORY" touch too it. You would think if it was a true story would them proclaim it one after the remake? Just a thought....

i remember watching a program on IFC called "The American Nightmare" directed by Adam Simon. It was a documentary sort of show that they aired around Halloween a couple years back. In the program they interviewed many different people including Romero, Cronenberg, Craven, Carpenter, Savini, Tobe Hooper and an assortment of critics and professors.... anyhoo, Hooper stated that he got the idea for TCM (aside from Ed Gein's story) while he was in the hardware department of a store during the Christmas season; there were tons of people (as there usually is that time of year) and he wondered what would be the fastest way to get out of the store... then he noticed the chainsaws. Voila, there was (part of) the inspiration for one of the most controversial horror movies ever made.

OK ONE OF YOU SAID IF THEY DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT WENT ON OUT THERE THEN HOW DO THEY KNOW HE KILLED PEOPLE WITH A CHAINSAW?

THE POLICE FOUND A FEW DEAD BODIES WITH SEVERED LIMBS AND A CHAINSAW WITH BLOOD ALL OVER IT AND THEY PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER.

AND ONE OF YOU SAID IT'S A MOVIE IT'S ALL FAKE.

JUST CAUSE IT'S A MOVIE DOES'NT MEAN IT'S ALL FAKE BRO.
THERE'S A MOVIE OUT RIGHT NOW CALLED RADIO, THEY SAY THAT'S INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY WITH ACTUALL FOOTAGE OF THE REAL RADIO. SO IS ALL OF THAT FAKE JUST CAUSE IT'S A MOVIE?

AND ALL OF YOU PRETTY MUCH MADE REFFERENCES TO GEIN I NEVER SAID THE MOVIE WAS'NT ABOUT GEIN I'M ACTUALLY SAYING THAT THE MOVIE IS PROBABLY ABOUT A GOOD 85 OR 90%
ABOUT GEIN THAT'S WHAT INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY MEANS MUCH LIKE THE GUY IN RADIO NOBODY REALLY KNOWS WHAT THE HELL WENT ON WITH THAT GUY OR THE SCHOOL'S FOOTBALL COACH SO THEY USED ANOTHER STORY AND TALKED TO SOME PEOPLE INVOLVED AND MADE THE MOVIE JUST LIKE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE THEY DID'NT KNOW WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED SO THEY USED ED GEIN'S STORY TO FILL IN THE BLANKS CAUSE ALL THEY KNEW WAS A OLD HOUSE A FEW MILES OFF A DIRT ROAD WHERE THE HEWITT FAMILY LIVED THERE WAS A GUY MURDERING PEOPLE AND HE USED A CHAINSAW TO DO IT SOMETIMES.

There's no documentation - anywhere - about a serial killer named Thomas Hewitt.

If there were existing film of this guy attacking someone with a chainsaw I guarantee you that he would be more well-known by now than Gein, Gacy, etc.

If there were existing film of anyone attacking cops with a chainsaw I guarantee you that it would have been floating around the internet for years now.

If this film existed, and they included it in the new TCM, police departments and victims families would be all over the news crawling up the asses of the filmmakers.

Is there anyplace where
-the people who made the new TCM talked about being inspired by the real Hewitt family murders?
-Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel talked about being inspired by the real Hewitt family murders?
-anybody has written anything about a serial killer with the last name of Hewitt?

THERE IS'NT ANY FILM OF HIM ATTACKING A POLIEMAN WITH A CHAINSAW OR ANYBODY ELSE WITH A CHAINSAW.

THEY HAVE TAPE OF THE POLICE WALK THROUGH OF THE HOUSE AND THEY WENT DOWN INTO THE BASEMENT AND HE WAS DOWN THERE. THEY DID'TN SECURE THE SCENE PROPERLY.

HAVE YOU WATCHED THE REMAKE? WHERE DID YOU GET THAT FROM THAT THERE'S FILM OF HIM ATTACKING SOMEONE WITH A CHAINSAW?

LOOK IT'S NOT LIKE I'M SOME KIND OF FANATIC ABOUT IF IT'S REAL OR NOT SO IF IT'S NOT I REALLY DON'T CARE AND IF IT IS I REALLY DON'T CARE ALL I KNOW IS THAT IT'S A CLASSIC MOVIE AND IF IT'S JUST THAT A MOVIE AND NOTHING ELSE THEN I BELIEVE YOU GUYS. I WAS JUST SAYING STUFF THAT I'VE HEARD NOT FROM A FRIEND BUT FROM THINGS I'VE DONE RESEARCH ON BUT IF MY RESEARCH IS'NT ACCURATE THEN I GUESS IT DID'NT HAPPEN.

BUT I DON'T SEE ANY REASON ANYONE WOULD HAVE TO LIE ABOUT IT. I MEAN TOBE HOPPER DID'NT SAY IT AS A MATTER OF FACT NOBODY WHO HAS EVER WORKED ON ANY TCM HAS SAID ANYTHING ABOUT IT I'M STATING ''FACTS'' THAT I'VE GOTTEN FROM RESEARCH I'VE DONE.BUT NOBODY'S PERFECT IT'S HIGHLY POSSIBLE THAT I GOT IT WRONG.

I did see the remake. To be honest, I was nearly completely drunk (I saw it at the Alamo Drafthouse, where they will serve you beer while you watch exploitation films - it's like heaven) so my memory is questionable. But I thought the last scene (the film of the cops checking out the scene of the crime) had the cops going down into the basement, being surprised by Leatherface and apparently dying as we heard a chainsaw and saw a freeze-frame of Leatherface.

Since we started talking about it I did some research and haven't been able to find any old newspaper articles or whatever referring to a chainsaw serial killer in Austin. I did find an article (which I posted on my web site) where a Texas historian is interviewed about the Hewitt subject... check it out here. I have access to Lexus/Nexis and the archives of the Austin-American Statesman and could not find any references to "Hewitt" and "chainsaw" or "Hewitt" and "murder" or "Hewitt" and "serial killer".

I'm not trying to call bull$hit on you or anything, or start some sort of stupid flame war. It's just that lots of movies are using the 'based on a true story' tack as a publicity stunt. This technique recently goes back to the Blair Witch Project but really started with the movie Snuff. So please don't take this as an attack.

I'm just interested in what evidence you do have, because it would be a cool story if it were real. So you said your research did find something out about a Hewitt story. What did you find out and where did you find it?

peace-
