i agree with puppetmaster about other slashers out there, Ben Willis from i know what you did last summer, Jeremy Melton from valentine, and Brenda from urban legad, o the list goes on,
i think that the writers and producers cant think of anything cause they r stupid in a way

Any machete wielding bad guy is going to be compared to Jason/F13, chainsaws with Leatherface/TCM, butcher knives with Michael/Halloween, hooks with candyman, etc...Almost every popular movie begets sequels, re-makes and prequels. Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Mummy, Godzilla, and so on. It's nothing new.
Blair Witch Project came up with a rather original concept, (which was successful) it has recently been copied by M. Night Shyamalan on the Sci-Fi channel. Movies tend to follow trends, Indies and Asian films are very popular right now. B-movies were very popular in the 50's and 60's, and now their making a strong comeback. Slashers have never left us, they are in lesser known, less popular, lower budget/campy films Their mainstream appeal has died off, but with all trends they will have a resurgence.

i think slashers were an 80s kind of thing. they made hundreds and hundreds in that decade and each one had at least some merit. but when you pull a genre out of the time frame it worked in it doesn't work as well.

I'm writing my dissertation about why certain types of horror are popular at certain times... it's kinda interesting to think about the 70s-80s slasher flicks, opposed to the stuff that's coming out now- it's all zombies and big disaster type of stuff coming out at the mo. (Sept 11th, terrorist attacks, genetic science, etc... being veeeery important issues in the media at the mo) The media affects the types of horrors coming out, because overall an element of realism helps a film to be scary, as people can identify with it and make the fear their own.
Oddness... it's starnge, I managed to watch 'Threads' (old BBC thing from late 70s) the other day, it's still scary because it's incredibly relevant now... just a few rambling thoughts... |
