Rick Baker has done a lot of amazing stuff, but what about those gaping wounds on the walking dead in Amer Were? Savini's top-cho zom in Dawn was clever. jack Pierce did some amazing jobs with only make-up and yak hair back in the early days.
Or the best special effect of all, the one in your mind---when Eastwood says in Unforgiven, "I saw Claudia last night, and she had worms in her eyes." |

I think the witch from Darkness Falls was good special effects. Her face could have been better, but oh well. It was simple and looked good - that's all there is to it.
There was potential to be a great movie also, but that's a different forum.

Creature~Aliens obviously and for some reason I really like the creeper in the second Jeepers Creepers.
Gore~On the realism scale I would definetly say Day of the Dead, so many moments in that movie made me cringe. On overall gore though I definetly have to say Dead-Alive, the most entertaining gore in any movie but loses some points because not all of it was well done. Character~ Jack's transformation from the first half of the film to the second was great. I must add my opinion that this was probably the best performance in any horror movie. (after reading the above topics again I realize the mistake I've made....this transformation has nothing to do with special effects but I'll leave it here anyway :).)

Damn, this is such a tough subject to tackle....I'm gonna have to think about this...
Ok, this is what originally popped into my head as far as makeup effects, but I had to research it a little..... Steve Johnson's work on Melinda Clark in Return of the Living Dead 3 always impressed me...Like the glass in the face and when she twists the spring through her skin and the numerous other acts of self-mutilation....Just awesome looking

I think the special effects in "Day Of The Dead" were excellent for that time period...It was a hell of a lot better than CGI
