Well in my opinon it doesn't matter at all.
It depends on how you want the idealogy of your story preceived. If a female director makes a film in the horror genre it gets roped into the feminist movement's way of preceiving film. "The Last Girl" blahhhh blahhhh vom. Males kinda get called exploitative and seixist while Females get the gritty art label. Ummmmm two examples of this would be Maniac and Ginger Snaps. There's some pretty blunt aritcles written about these films in regard to this... look 'em up if you can be fucked. I got a friend that uses an alias to avoid such misconceptions
