The Rite
Has anyone seen it?
Personally I didn't think this was scary or necessarily even horror but in our mordern society where atheism is very predominant and faith in God almost seems to be a detriment to a persons social standing this movie managed to get me thinking. Now I wouldn't call myself a religious person nor would I say I'm a total science worshipping atheist either but this movie definitely struck a chord with me in a way The Exorcist and all its special effects (which I LOVE) never did. The human brain is still vastly unchartered territory and even though psychology can explain a lot of things that people put down to 'demonic possession' in the past, it still got me wondering if real life cases of possession are undiagnosed/undiscovered mental illnesses or if true evil really does exist. We've all heard stories about people in terrifying situations commiting acts of physical strength (due to adrenalin and fear) that they otherwise would be unable to e.g. mothers lifting vehicles off of their trapped children or people sawing off their own limbs when trapped beneath something unmovable. It got me wondering if when in a state of mental duress would it be possible to undergo other physical changes such as the sound of the voice, inhuman strength, contortion and surviving without food or water for weeks on end or if there really is some truth to demonic evil channeling through a person. What do you guys think? Any opinions? Also before I bring this essay to an end I just want to say that Anthony Hopkins still hasn't lost his touch. It is going to be a very sad day when he is no longer around to make movies.

I liked the possession scenes.
I also liked the idea that you can goto Exorcism College. |
