In the Mouth of Madness (1995). This is truly one of Carpenter's masterpieces. This lovely little horror entry really caught the feel of Lovecraft and somehow translated it onto film. The sense of humor that was sprinkled about gave this flick a wonderful balance between subtle dread and fun. Sam Neill was awesome as the implacably suspicious insurance investigator looking to root our the perfect scam. Julie Carmen's performance was a little askew for sure, almost as if too stone to know what was going on, but it worked nonetheless. Jurgen Prochnow was awesome as the darkest of villains. The direction of course was splendid. The effects were pretty cool for the time, though for effect they could have been left a little more in the shadows to extract an even more subtle feeling of terror. Overall, this is a sadly overlooked horror extravagance. Mercie beaucoup.

Rio Bravo (1959)

Wow, what a great film. All of the elements of a perfect movie are present - great story, characters, acting, photography, directing, everything is perfect. My new favourite western, and one of my favourite films.

-10/10

Glad to hear you liked it too, DP.

Go watch it, folks. You are gonna love it.

Richard Attenburrough gives a chilling portrayal of a real life serial killer. The pacing is deliberatly slow, which gives it a naturalistic feeling. Attenborrough's acting is impeccable. His soft spoken manner makes him seem even more creepy.

Stir of Echoes (1999). This is simply about a mid-life crisis of the worst kind. This highly underrated flick came out just after The Sixth Sense and hence suffered the the demise of the shadow. The story was a wonderful adaption of a novel by newbie director/old hand writer David Koepp. The acting was impressive for a ghost story, but then again Kevin Bacon rarely disappoints. Kathryn Erbe was solid as well, but it was the child actor Zachary David Cope that shone brilliantly. The scares were impressive, and there was a subtle form of humor that made this one more than entertaining. This was simply a gem in the not so rough. Merci beaucoup.

Very good film, really enjoyed Michael Caines seemingly harmless old man taking the youngsters to school. He played it well.

Zulu

A true classic, immortalizing the battle at a small British outpost called Rourke's Drift between 4000 zulu warriors and 100 soldiers.

Agreed. Solid film. In some ways it reminded me of The Descent, with the moral/civil decay of the protagonists. Not done quite as well, but a smarter film than most horror offerings none the less.

Worth watching for Crispin Glover and I dug the booby traps but nothing special.
