What's the point of a "butch" dyke?

The dyke thing is wierd - but I have seen some very cute dykes who have gone for the Butch types. i've often wondered the same thing re 'classic gay couples'
why do most of them still have a masculine and feminine roll ? does it all basically come down to the dick. either its out of the equation completely (lesbians) or the main focus (gay men) apparently there's also a thing about lesbians and vibrators ...
